Season opened here Mon Oct 1st I hunted opening day but not here in NY but was in WY for antelope and muledeer. Killed 2 antelope a buck and doe but never had a chance at a muley I wanted to shoot. Any how back to NY and archery season. The cameras have been out soaking since the day after Labor Day. I've been disappointed for the most part. No signs of the droptine buck from last season as that property is dependent on apples and there is none on the trees in that spot this season. I hold hopes he shows up later looking for doe,I know he is still alive and made it through . The property I killed the archery buck on last season is showing a lot of deer but nothing on camera worth shooting to this point. The property I took the big 8 pt on during the last day or so of muzzle-loader season has one deer that has got me interested. I have pictures of him 1 time during September and then he showed up on Oct 1st opening day in good shooting light. I would not have been hunting even if I had not been in WY as I feel it's a bit too early and will start ramping up here after next week .Forecast is calling for warm and 80 degrees a couple days next week but cooling down by next weekend and that's when I'll start picking my spots according to wind and deer activity. Sit back enjoy the ride and good luck to everyone chasing deer this season Here are a couple pictures of my antelope and then of the 1 good buck I have pictures of.
I had/have a real nice tall 9 point on my new property I bought this year and today when I pulled the cards I discovered he broke his G3 on his right side, kinda bummed over that as I was hoping to hunt him. I’m 99% positive it’s him but the pic is blurry as it was one of my cheap cameras. It’s this guy.
Dan, Each year I look forward to your thread here. Thanks for posting. I began chasing the whitetail around the Adirondacks (still hunting) 1952 and have never seen bucks greater than those that you have on film. Keep on keeping on. Jim
49 degrees this morning weather has flipped to cool so hopefully this gets deer moving...still shooting for Sunday as temp at 6am is forecast for 40 degrees
Good for RC, and yes, get it on Dan, I let a nice 16" 8pt walk yesterday, thinking he had a big buddy coming up, no dice, mom and her fawn came by too, along with one then another yearling doe, had a silly young buck aggravating yearling daughter number two that was a few yards behind mom and gang, funny as hell to watch and hear them bleating lightly amongst themselves, sit tight on that one too thinking dad or grandpa would be behind to run young jr off the yearling, no dice, when big boy messes up, I'll be there!
I saw I'm waiting and have high standards....checked cards again today at property with the big 9 pt and only doe and a scrappy little buck....tic toc tic toc 1 week till stuff gets real but I'll likely dip my toe in Sunday am
I've had this buck on the trail cam on and off for two seasons.....He didn't get that big by being careless.https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/tmp/82337.jpghttps://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/tmp/82338.jpg
Great just got this message as I was typing the above post this is in reference to the drop tine buck from last year
"Hey sorry been doing some traveling for work. I suspect he was killed sometime between the 2-9th. I have a few years of info on him across field videos, glassing, pics and date tracking when he shifts his range. I physically saw him opener evening but he has been MIA after that. He typically started spending more time south and east of us third week of oct through mid nov and even at worst we’d get middle of night pics or vids. I have nothing on him after oct 1. I’d be shocked if he’s still alive. Ah well.
Put it this way - I haven’t gone a week without pics of him since 2016."
never know,he could have an early hot one. Beauty of a morning,40*driving to my spot. Seen 7-8 doe early and a yote, other than tree rats been quiet last couple hrs. First time out, just had to get away from everybody.
I'll hold out hope he is wrong ya never know I'm monitoring my cams and other hunters reports and it's just too soon for what I'm looking for.... by next weekend the full court press will start regardless
I’m hoping on my property that a bigger neighboring buck comes by to harass all my does (I’ve got a ton of em) and kick that 9pter out....I also hope nobody else shoots that 9... But I’ve got a son, daughter (looking for her first) and my wife who also will be looking for her first....never can tell what will happen. I am not gonna tell them to pass him up for their first deer, regardless of his broken point though I can wish.
I saw five doe and a flock of hen turkeys from my stand I got down just at dark and when I drove around the backside of the property into the cut cornfield there was about 25 doe freding in the fresh cut corn stubble Along the back edge of the field about 30 yards from where I was sitting when I killed my buck last year was a very big buck I think it was the one I have pictures of it was just too dark to distinguish fully At any rate he was a shooter
Tomorrow morning I have my first sit of the year. I’ve got tons of daytime pics of bucks around my property but nothing that really grabs me at the moment.

Best of luck, I haven't been out this year yet either...a specialist appointment of Friday hopefully solves that problem.
Sitting here trying to fill a doe tag. Had 4 flat tops go screaming by with thier tails on fire. Right behind the here comes a little 4 doing the "I'm gonna get some puddy" prance. I love this time of year. Next 3 weeks is as good as it gets in this AO

Yes that's how it starts young little buck get antsy 1st,big guys know it's not quite time yet Woods here as bbassi knows are still very thick and full of foliage
Left the house early checked cameras on property I killed my archery buck last year nothing to get excited about Left and headed to drop tine buck property (btw he didn’t grow a drop this year) Word from neighboring hunter I share info with was he had seen him on 10/1 and he vanished told me he thought he got whacked between 10/2 and 10/9 Well.... not so fast my friends I have amazing pictures of him multiple time well after 10/9 all at night I’ll 95% sure it’s the droptine buck from last season Another really nice 10 pt and multiple other bucks I had 3898 pictures on this camera I’ll post pictures after I down load them I have a fresh rub on a tee 20 yds from my stand I’m super pumped now!!!
38 when I went out been snowing & sleeting off and onall day fig they might move only deer seen was a 1 1/2 6pt, thought about shooting but theres 4 bigger bucks in this spot! kept hopeing another one would come by. guess Im changing 2 years ago he be on the Pole! Happy Hunting!
Sorry to muddle up your thread Dan.......I killed a doe Sunday morning. Good shot, easy tracking, nice 2.5 year old doe and good cool temps for processing.
Almost forgot was so excited to get pictures of my nemesis.....Saw 13 deer tonight 4 buck nothing big ....spike ,3 pt ,4 pt and one I didn't get a look at that well but don't think he was a shooter. Could have killed 2 buck and 2 doe this afternoon
Well got to my stand last evening, got ready to hook my Xbow to the pull rope, felt something sharp, and yup big sliver on the bottom of the rt. limb. Said Chit and called it an afternoon, Heading to a large shop that deals with Excaliber Crossbows! Lifetime warranty, just dont know how long to get a limb, hopeing they might have one in stock as its an hour drive each way, so im down for now!
Saw about 16 today. 5 were bucks, my beans are still greenish and this evening they were on it like I thought they would be. My big 9 with the broken G2 was there and he’s also got a broken eye guard. A 130ish 8 pt was there too....I’m kinda torn about him, he’s probably 3 1/2 but his tines are on the shorter side, nice and wide and good mass but I think there’s a bigger one that is on a neighboring property.
Slower this afternoon 2 doe 1 buck Nothing close to me 100 yds away buck I just caught a glimpse of and couldn’t tell how big
Good luck Dan, keep after em, I just got back from visiting and bow hunting up at an old Buds place in KS, got so close on a couple mid 140's and an upper 150's class buck, damn thick vegetation up there in that tight pocket I was hunting in, were I a poacher, i'd have pulled that Dan Wesson 10mm off my belt and shot that 150.
He invited me back up in two or three weeks when the ruts in full swing.

Hunting property I shot buck end of season last year Just saw Freak Nasty! Enormous 8pt with huge droptine Was 40 yds from me but turned at edge of my shooting lane He beat up a tree then circled through thick stuff and hit a scrape 100 yds from me I brought a camera to hang in front of that scrape I wish it was there already so I got a picture of him!
Hung a stand and the camera near scrapes had a stand stashed under a tree for just such an occasion I had looked at trees last time I hunted the property wished I'd have set it up that day as I'd of had a chip shop at this monster
Hunted tonight, had a doe and a nubbin come by and also had a 100” 8pt come in to the base of my tree and feed there for about 10 minutes. I “can” called him over from the other side of my bean field which I noticed today is a whole lot less green on my inside corner, all the other beans are brown and looks like they are ready to be picked.
Last night wind shifted allowing me to hunt the new stand....3 doe came in and were 12 yds from me and never knew I was there Work commitments and an airport pick up this afternoon will have me off from hunting today
Ok so I tell it like it is, I misjudged the deer I saw yesterday I thought he was bigger than he is(I guess looking through bino's and brush got me seeing more than there was) .He is a 6 pt with a drop tine.I got pictures of him.He gets a pass from me he needs another year.
Good news my Turk deer (last years droptine buck) is still hanging in my area.
It will be interesting to see if Turk has an injury that causes that screwed up right side. The left looks completely normal. Guess you need to shot him so we can get the results of the necropsy Dan.
Well bad news I arrived at my hunting spot this morning and property owner came out and met me at my Jeep telling me he got a call from the sheriffs department that there was a missing 19 yr old girl since 9:30 pm last night from a bordering subdivision. I told him I'd keep my eyes opened and check all my cameras 1st half hour seemed normal had a small buck pass right by my stand then saw 2 doe further out. Then I heard people yelling Madeline? They actually pushed two small buck right to me that I could have easily killed. Then I started seeing people walking through the property and through field so I got down and approached them telling them I'd not seen the girl and I'd been there since before dark. One of them was the girls father,I told him I'd already checked one camera and no sign of here and I'd check my other 3 cameras. As I leaving the area someone on a 6x6 gator was tearing up the property.I approached and told them you can't be back here on that but it was the fire dept searching and they had been all night. I informed them they wouldn't be getting much further on the machine as there was 2 steep creek banks and brush so thick you could barely walk through it. Search party of volunteers, sheriffs, troopers, horses, search dogs and helicopter were on the way I pray they find this women I'm skeptical she in the woods and if she is with no shoes or jacket it was 36 degrees last night I fear a not so good out come
I'm sure the Turk is blown out of here now and don't know if he ever comes back?
Madeline Rose was found safe in Mendon Thursday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Rose was conscious but suffering from hypothermia when she was found, and was taken to an area hospital, police said.
A citizen volunteer driving toward the village to help search for Rose spotted her walking in a field, said Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Cpt. Paul DeLella.
About 75 to 100 personnel and residents were out searching house to house for Rose, who left her home on foot around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Obviously here in Sweden there is nothing I could contribute, but your posts got me thinking about the girl and how cool it would be if a hunter (you) might help find her by checking game cameras for images of her. It could have been some nice positive PR for hunters in general!
Anyway, thanks for the followup, and I'm glad the girl was found.
I finished up to late yesterday to get in the woods but did park and glass a large field adjacent to one of my spots...Watched a shooter buck with his nose to the ground starting to get interested in the does around him. Certainly not full blown rut, but it's close. The wind is switching to the south this afternoon which favors a set up I have...I will give it a try later.
Had a mid 130’s 50 yds behind me last night. In thick brush watching does out in a field. He stood there about half hr just watching, never moved until he decided to walk away and when he did it was straight away from me. Tried can calling him, got his attention but he didn’t come.
Doing a special draw “military” hunt tomorrow. Primitive muzzleloader they call it. Sidekick, open sights and conical/ball only.
Good luck Tom
I'm pulling back a bit movement has slowed, rain all weekend and my spots need to rest Yesterday afternoon was my 1st goose egg all season saw no deer just 5 turkey. Camera pictures have been lacking also I'm hoping after the weekend things have settled down and deer are back to normal on the disturbed property with the Turk
I put a buddy in one of my favorite hanging stands last night and he arrowed a respectable 8 point. I sat to the South off the ocean and saw 7 bucks...could have killed 6 of them ( A scrub 6 and nice 8 were locking horns right below me). I was waiting on a very nice 130'ish I saw several times earlier in the week to show up...He did, but broke off a ways out maybe chasing a doe into the thick and never re surfaced. A great sit and my buddy could not be happier. Hopefully this weather / wind will pass and I can try again on Sunday.[img]https://i.imgur.com/qIYRARZ.jpg[/img[img]https://i.imgur.com/v27gtgd.jpg[/img

congrats ...you need to learn how to post pictures properly here it's very easy
Was a blowout. Not a deer sighted, the last 5-6 times there I’ve noticed I haven’t seen anything. Used to be a big buck paradise. Got 2 on the wall from there. I’m thinking of hanging it up with that place.
It’s just about time here in PA. Going to start hunting on Weds. or Thurs. in what has been a very productive ground stand in a small travel corridor that rutting bucks use....
Had a real good 3yo cruise through this morning at 15 yds. Real good buck for around here. He was the 17th buck I've seen this year. Can't buy a doe though. Story of my hunting life...
Yup. I hear ya. I personally don’t hunt Sunday’s so it dont bother me but come any other day of the week I wanna be out and wind/weather isn’t right it kills me, but on the flip side I’ve got about 10-12 various hunting areas to go to so for the most part between all of them one of them will work on any given day. Pretty soon big boy is gonna get dumb and let himself get shot.

Quiet morning, does and a small spike. This afternoon was shaping up a bit better until some trespasser decided to take a walk about (on private land) right through the area I was watching. Did manage to see a 6 pt and a better buck when things settled down right before dark at 35 yds but I would not take that shot.
Frustrating but beautiful bow hunting day. I hunt some real thick stuff, and everything is so wet and a little breeze makes it real hard to hear them coming. My buck tags filled and I had 2 good shooters inside 15 yds. The second one stood broadside at 10 yds looking the other way tonight. I started to draw just to say I could but stopped short of anchor to keep my inner redneck in check. The only doe I saw showed up at 10 yds with the bow hanging on the hook and me with my phone in hand checking the 'fire. LOL. Oh well, I didn't want to track one tonight anyway.
Well the Turk is alive and well and I laid eyes on him in the flesh for the 1st time ever in 2 yrs.!!! He looks even more spectacular in person! He snuck behind me at 35 yds at 5 pm. It was windy and the ground soaked from rain so I never heard him and just caught him as he passed through my one window behind me.He went into the field and wanted nothing to do with my grunt and just kept going along the edge of the field. Saw 2 smaller buck and 3 doe. The pinata is about ready to burst wide opened.
Pictures of the buck that ran some doe yesterday afternoon and the Spindle 10 pt from last night
sat this afternoon, didnt see a deer! they are starting to case here the younger bucks anyway! Iv heard Buddies place im headed to tommorow he saw a real good 8pt. bothering some does but out of range! Happy Hunting!
Hunted this morning, one five pt and a doe (64degrees), this afternoon rushed back to an estate I have permission....Got up a tree and heard a compressor start on the opposite side of the property. Two guys spent the rest of the afternoon blowing out the irrigation system but managed to see one six pt with one side broke up/smashed and two doe.:(
Things got jiggy this morning on property I killed my archery deer last season. Chasing and I saw so many small buck I couldn't count but no shooters and none on camera from that property all season Hunting the Turk this afternoon
It's on! Saw a little doe then a buck cut across field then just before dark 2 doe entered field and a buck chased them around it was just too dark to tell if it was the Turk
It's that time of the season we all wait for pre rut and bucks running hither and thither ....it's a love hate time for me when the chasing starts as bucks are like pinballs darting around and with a bow you need some luck in the equation to score now....
Pouring rain this morning had 3 doe fly past my stand 10 minutes later a small 6 pt at 5 yds on their trail Saw a micro spike and I was out at 10 am to dry out
No rain here yet but had a small buck chase a doe past me this AM, and also a small spike came in! got a Dandy Buck where im getting ready to hunt this evening! Happy Hunting Boys!
Way to windy to go up a tree this afternoon so I just drove around and glassed couple of my spots....6 does at one spot not being bothered....another big field 20 min west... many does, 4 8 pts (one borderline shooter) and a 6 pt. The bigger buck was locking horns and starting to chase.
Matthew got a shot at a small 6pt. He apparently didn’t see the branch about 3/4 of the way to it. He grazed the buck and all we found was a little bit of white hair. That’s the first time Matthew ever pulled the trigger on a deer and we are not bringing it home. I told him he hunts long enough and it will happen to anybody.
Had a good sit yesterday afternoon 5 doe and 4 buck... spike 6 pt 8 pt and a big shooter 10 pt I’ve never seen befor Only deer I could have killed was the spike the rest were too far In my stand perfect morning 30 degrees and calm saw 1 doe skirting the field already
Tom, you tell Matthew he is now an official member of a club all bowhunters are members of . The good news is white hair, no blood on ground or arrow, graze shot, buck will live another day. The one that really sticks with me is Montana elk hunt back in the nineties.. 5x5 brow tine bull, 30yds correct shot placement, we searched for that bull two full days, nothing. I considered it a kill and my hunt was over.....Still haunts me !!
Crazy morning young bucks chasing doe all over the woods Saw the big 10 pt around 11 am chase doe across field I was on the ground and saw deer chasing next ridge I ran up to field and got behind a tree and nocked an arrow after a minute or two he chased the doe right out infront of me but at 80 yds there was a small buck following them. Came home for a quick bite and to take care of my pooch heading back in to the woods shortly
Hunted my longbow in the piney thickets on the ground today, had a doe broadsided at 6 or 7 yards, I let her go, thought a buck may be trailing her, no dice this time, sat there with a stupid grin on my face for at least an hour later, guess that means I was enjoying myself, cool as hell experience that i'll never forget.
Taking a break this afternoon weather has got warm and windy tomorrow they are calling for high winds with gusts to 50 mph Saw 3 doe and 2 buck this morning neither a shooter, one was an 8 pt that went to the field scrape and got his picture taken Then I left that property and sat 10 am til 12:30pm on another property....nothing moving but I got some pictures from my cams
4 bucks first thing this morning and a couple of does...went very quiet after that..called it and got some work done...decided to pass on the afternoon sit.
Starting to Chase here, I took a Large Doe on Monday afternoon for the freezer, windy & rain today takeing a day off but calling for snow the next few days! Happy Hunting!
Turk came through yesterday while I hunted a different property(30 mph winds yesterday afternoon and I ran out last minute and other property was closer) Batteries in cam need to be change pictures are a bit grainy and time is off
What a fun hunt this afternoon, sitting on the ground saw 5 doe a spike and had a 4 pt chase chasing a doe go by me at 15 yds Then when I left the property I saw a deer starting to cross in front of my Jeep I hit the brakes and it’s the Turk Eyeball to eyeball with me at 20 yds in my headlights He starts to go across as another car is coming the other way I yell noooo and hit the horn the other car breaks and he runs across back onto my side of the road

Good luck, Tom.
Im halfway through the thread. Hope youve already stuck him.
Swing and a miss on my buddies buck after 4.5 hrs of searching / following sign (did see a young 8 chasing a doe while doing so)...He drove back home in disgust. I hunting last night, got wet and saw does but will give it another try this afternoon.
Here are some pictures 8pt I grunted in and passed on Friday
Then remind me not to be a pussy when it's blowing 25-30 mph check out the buck in the back ground he has to be the one I saw twice last weekend,he is standing right near the bush I cut out to sit on the ground and hunt windy days ugh!
Then from other property the drop tine 6 pt again and an 8 pt that looks heavy but can't really gauge him
Yesterday morning was a slow go, 8 pt, a spike and a bunch of doe...did see a mature wide buck, but at 240 yds I thought it a bit of reach for my Hoyt Also recovered a buck my buddy arrowed the night before. I'll try a different spot this afternoon.
I've decided to start using my climber again and hunt a few other spots I have permission further east....I'm just not seeing good mature bucks where I have hanging stands.
I saw a small spike, my Buddie shot a doe out of a tent blind I have so we had a tracking job in the 6" of snow got my side by side almost to her, Beers after ward, was a good time!
I have to amend the above. The lockdown phase I think is on one of properties about an hour away. I came back to my land I bought this year and killed a buck I called dagger. He’s an 8 with a small dagger coming off his base, gave me a 21 yd shot and he decided to go for a swim in my pond after the shot. Lol It’s dark so this is the best pic I have at the moment.
Work and getting a 351-c .22 mag placed on my carry prevented me from getting out today... the plan for tom afternoon is to try a new spot with my climber.
My buck looks wet because well...he is. He took a dive in my pond. Glad I was able to retrieve him without having to swim. This is where I found him. Lol
Thx. This coming Saturday is our gun opener and for the past 4 yrs in a row I’ve been fortunate enough to kill out with archery before gun starts, that’s when they act super skittish and almost disappear. This year I can concentrate on helping the wife and daughter get their first deer. My son is quite capable of doing it on his own so I’m putting him with my wife in a stand and I’m taking my daughter. I’m gonna be gunlesss. Lol.
Congrads on the Buck Tom! saw two fawns last night, rifle opens tommorow , so Im done with Bow for this season! Good Luck Dan hope you get to meet the Turk!

Ok so my cousin had worse luck than me This picture was taken 10 yds in front of his stand this afternoon He was in the stand with his crossbow When it went to take his safety off it made a slight nose the deer buggered and bounded a few hops and he had no shot The deer slowly walked away He’s been after this piebald for 3 years He had the camera set up on a stump right in front of his stand Time stamp is off 1 hour
Good luck to all that will be going out for the opening rifle Saturday...I decided to go up at 04:30 tomorrow, hunt through Sunday then back to bowhunting Long Island.
This morning was an almost great one saw a button buck, doe and a spike then had a big shooter 8 pt pass 35 yds in front of me but so thick no shot Last hooray with bow in the morning we are getting a snow storm right now Saturday the equalizer comes out
Good luck to all that will be going out for the opening rifle Saturday...I decided to go up at 04:30 tomorrow, hunt through Sunday then back to bowhunting Long Island.
Same, same to everyone who's going out with firearms this weekend. I 'm going to sit with # 2 son in a dbl stand, oldest son and my buddy will be out as well.
calling for upwards of 8-12" of snow by then,so who knows how they will be moving.
Enjoyable last morning hunting with a fresh blanket of snow saw 2 deer a button and a 6 pt I could have killed both I had 2 close encounter one with the Turk on Oct 29th and one yesterday with a big 8pt both between 30-35 yds but no shots I could have killed truck loads of lessor deer but I need to be happy when I walk up on a kill not ho hum .
The quest for Turk will continue with the gun starting tomorrow I've said it before I am always dissapointed when archery ends as gun season brings out the knucklehead brigade It becomes more luck than matching wits after the shots start to fly

I'm not that superstitious, but he better watch out. An old Indian saying is that killing a piebald or albino brings bad Mojo.
Good luck tomorrow with gun season, hopefully the "Walkies" aren't walking around too much and spooking all of the deer. Our gun season starts on the 24th.

I'm not that superstitious, but he better watch out. An old Indian saying is that killing a piebald or albino brings bad Mojo.

We heard all your babble about this before I'd whack the crap out of that buck any day, wished the piebald I was after didn't get killed last year BTW you planning on attending the hog hunt in March?
Don't feel bad Dan. You have standards and you stuck by them. I, for one, respect that. Besides, there's always late season and with all the standing corn and soybeans that got left I'm thinking it could be a good one this year. Are you planning to hunt Ohio or PA this year?

Had my best opening day in NY ever. 24 deer, 11 bucks. This one and 3 other buck chased a doe right under me at 12:45. Amazing what a hot doe (or 2) will do for you. Stay after them Dan. Gun season started a week early so there's still hot does getting chased hard.
Great looking bucks. Well our opening day on my new property was really slow. Heard very few shots (30-40 all day, so I don’t think it was just us) and only saw 6, one being a 6-7 pt buck but not given a shot. I sat with my daughter and my son Matthew sat with my wife. Around 4:15 pm I hear my wife shoot and then I can hear some crashing, she texts me and tells me she shot her first deer. Woohoo! So after all the slowness of the day my wife got her first deer, very proud of her. It’s not the big buck she was hoping for but it’s a bb. She was happy and that’s what it is all about.
Another dark til dark sit 10 buck and 9 doe Turk is alive I had him 125 yds in front of me at 9 am so thick no shot watched him for 20 minutes through binoculars other bucks were 2 2 1/2 yr old 8pts and rest scrub bucks I'm beat up but I'll be back out in the morning
Hunted the other property this morning due to crunchy snow and not wanting to bump deer around at Turk property Had a couple doe come by and then 400yds away I neighboring property I watched 3 buck chasing doe One looked to be the droptine 6 pt at one point 2 doe flew through woods below me at about 150 yds and then that was the last of the action Back to hunting the Turk this afternoon
I give you a lot of credit Dan...you sure are dedicated !! I jumped back on the spray truck last couple of days but plan on going out tomorrow afternoon and Thursday am.
Haa, that's a little nipplie. I blew it off this morning, but it's perfect here. I needed to come to work anyway. Our gun season starts tomorrow with heavy rain tomorrow afternoon.
I tried a spot further east this afternoon, a couple of doe, young 6 pt, a better mature 8 about 100 yds out and then a doe came charging in with a shooter right up her rear...she veered off about 40 yds out and of course he followed...going back tomorrow afternoon and Sunday....I'm getter closer all the time
FWIW - my buddy just killed a 2yo 7point this morning on my place. he was chasing 5 doe in circles around the stand. That makes at least 5 weekends in a row that we have caught bucks chasing does hard here. No lull between first and second rutt. Very strange year.
Recap of yesterday : Missed a nice tom but did get to enjoy the glow from the lite nocks, yes 2 of them. I watched a skid steer work in the patch of hard woods where that shooter comes from and had a guy walked right to my hanging stand at 3:45 pm, look up and ask if I was hunting?? because he wanted to WTF !!! Sometimes what you have to deal with hunting smaller pieces of woods on Long Island....Better luck this afternoon.
After yesterdays fiasco I hunted a spot this afternoon where my bud wounded one two weeks ago...Low and behold it appears the white horned, wide and tall mature 8 pt is alive and well with a bit of a limp coming from his left shoulder....That didn't seem to slow him down chasing does though. I believe the wind is right in the morning so I'll give it a shot.
deer in front of me but too dark to shoot, then buck chasing doe around the pines saw buck not a shooter never had an opportunity at the doe Pouring rain if it lets up a little I'll go out last couple hours and try and make meat No hunting Turk property creek flooded with rapid snow melt and rain
Bumped a buck walking in saw 5 doe was gonna shoot a fat doe but she got the drop on me as I raised my gun Glassed the cut corn field after I left and saw a bunch of doe and what looked like a very nice buck but just to dark to zero in on him through the binos
This week has sucked. First it rained like hell on Saturday and Monday, then it cleared up and the wind blew 30 to 50 MPH the past couple of days. On Saturday afternoon, I couldn't even get to my stand because the creek I have to go across was flooding. Well the wind finally stopped and it's a beautiful 36*. I'll be out this afternoon and tomorrow. I was supposed to be off this week to hunt, but I said the hell with it and worked anyway because it was so sucky outside. Maybe I'll take a few days off next week. I think the rut is slowing down here though.
It was very still, quiet and calm not really any wind at all.I wasn't sure I was even going to see a deer with it being so still.
At a little after 4pm I saw 4 doe skirting through the hardwoods. Then a couple minutes later had a spike come into the field and mill around and then walk into the hardwoods and cut 70 yds in front of me. Pretty standard sit so far. 3 doe cut out of the pines and behind me all the deer thus far were traveling towards the front of property. Next 2 buck enter the field a small spike( I call micro spike because he doesn't even have 3" spikes) and a 4 pt,these are all buck I've seen over and over again so was pretty ho hum till this point...then things got spicy. Micro spike and 4 pt all of a sudden bolt my direction in the field and stop before the pines along the edge, they are just looking into the pines and finally walk into them.I then hear a grunt and think that doesn't sound like it came from the 4 pt? Next 3 doe fly down the ridge line behind me about 120 yds, I think "did someone on the adjacent property bump them?", but as I'm thinking that they dart back were the came from running all over the place so I know a buck is messing with them. I'm now standing up in my stand looking back and scanning with my binoculars and I see a doe 75 yds from my stand motionless staring down through the hardwoods back out in front of me. I'm watching her and trying to look back to where she is staring to see what has her attention? I see nothing as I scan, then I look back towards the field and I see a group of deer along the edge of the pines 5 of them! I turn and sit in my stand and see they are all buck, two small buck are sparing mico and 4 pt are standing watching and there is one buck hanging back just into the pines. I pull up my binoculars and could see he had some stuff going on rack wise and was a good buck,at this point I wasn't sure if it was the Turk or not but decided first opportunity at a shot I'd take it as I've rode this rodeo before thinking I'll wait till he comes all the way out only to have him lock up and turn around walking away, especially since that's where the doe were all running around.
The rest is history he stepped forward one step and gave me a clear shot to his front shoulder at 90 yds and he went on a 60 yd death run and dropped behind some brush. Until I walked up on him I wasn't sure what he was or if he was my nemesis, unfortunately not but again I wouldn't have passed him regardless. 1 week off then the quest will continue with the muzzle loader.
As a side note I've never seen this buck or have a single picture of him so you really just never know what will happen or who will show up
Good to hear the second rut is heating up. I did a little push for a friend yesterday and from the tracks it looked like there had been some chasing here in the last couple days. Not that I have a buck tag left, but still can make it exciting. Congratulations Dan, you earned that one.
Doe is completely butchered and in the freezer, the buck is skinned and quartered and aging a couple days in fridge Getting things around here and work caught up so I can hit the last 10 days of MZer hard
Checked my cameras yesterday things have slowed way down and still no Turk Got a picture of buck I killed from earlier that day Picture of what I think is the drop tine 6 pt from other property as well as coyote
For Fuuck’s sake Dan...You are one of the best hunters on the Fire. Would you just please Rambo one of those bucks! JFC, I’m freezing my ass off thinking about the hours you’re spending waiting on “The Turk” Big Grin! 😎
Well deer started filtering out had doe in the field then the 1/2 rack buck slipped out and then BOOM someone shoots very very close by The deer get freaky and all vacate the field had doe in both sides of the field and the 1/2 rack has been the 1st one out followed by the better bucks
Today and tomorrow unfortunately the wind isn't ideal either day I'll try anyways deer have been coming out on the other side of the field too If I don't get one he will be bigger next season
7 doe no buck and that's a wrap for 2018 deer season. I'll call it a success I didn't kill the buck I was after but got a nice 11 pt and a small doe (BB) I hunted over 60 days and saw deer every sit but 2
I'm still at it...had three 8 pt bucks walk right under me this evening, one right after another the largest bringing up the rear. But they were not one of the boys I've been after this season, I guess I'll keep at though it does get a bit frosty at times 25' up a tree with the wind blowing hard out the North .
Merry Christmas to all and I just received a nice gift....a picture of the Turk from 12/21 after the season hoping he winters well and the quest continues next season!

Thanks for coming on this journey with me
Well what a surprise. I figured a neighbor had gotten him. Good news.
Thanks for all the great pics and the work of taking us on the ride with you. Merry Christmas and have a happy.....
I'm still at it, you can hunt bow hunt right through January and the bucks are partnering up again out here. I had three 8 points walk in single file right under my tree the other afternoon, all within 5min or so. Third in line would have taken if was the last day but there is still time to try and get one of the two I've been hunting,
I don't use climbers I have the Lone Wolf climbing sticks....costly but I love them
Those Lone Wolf sticks and stands are an awesome setup. I've had them before, including two of the very first run of original Lone Wolf stands. For me, I just can't justify the price any longer. You're looking at ~$400 per stand. There's some great stuff out there at a significantly lower cost.
I pulled my cameras from the property I was hunting muzzleloader season, all the buck I was seeing made it! The big one I almost had but it was too dark the drop tine buck, busted rack buck etc. Even got the droptine and nice 8pt fighting!
Looking forward to what they will be next season plus the Turk made it on the other property best I could have hoped for
Yes. I pulled some cards as well and I also have a bunch of survivors. The one that I am worried about is the big 9 that busted a tine early on. Haven’t seen hair nor hide of him since early November.
