I am hoping to upgrade to a new bow this year and am finding mixed information about arrow spine weight. I am looking at the Hoyt Powermax which has an IBO speed of 328. a few charts ive read say to use at least a 300 spine arrow for my 29'' draw length and 70 lbs weight, but others say 350/340 will be fine. I currently shoot 340 spine on my old 2005 hoyt and am wondering if anyone has input on their arrow selection for a set up similar to the above? will I need to buy different arrows?
How much weight you planning for up front?
We are lacking fair amount of information to determine an optimum spine & if your old arrows may perform well for you for your new bow. What spine are your old arrows and what are you looking to do with said arrows? Are you seeking speed or momentum?
Personally I lean fairly heavy to a quiet arrow to achieve momentum with weight of 450 grain plus total arrow weight for penetration based on my observation.
Your better off with to stiff a spine than to weak.
my apologies, my current bow is set at 68 lbs with 29'' draw. the arrows are victory 340 spline with 100 gr broadheads. the total weight of the arrow is approx. 390 grs. im hunting blacktail and mulies but more range time than anything. mostly looking for speed than anything.
With the 100 grain head I expect you are in a workable window with your current arrows. Guess I would try to tune the new bow with your old arrows and see what happens. Good luck. See what kind of luck you have.
Mind if I ask which 100 grain heads you chose? Fixed or expandable?
I think you should be good. I have used Beman 340's with several Hoyts over the past EEK!, 30 years, and the 340's have worked at my 29" DL with everything from Hoyt 70lb Supertec, (330fps rating), to my current 60lb Hoyt Spyder Turbo, point weights 100gr to 125gr. The dynamic spine of the Beman and Gold Tip 340's is very wide. My hunting buddy used them at 78lbs with a couple different bows with the same weight heads.
Peak weight isn't a perfect indicator in all cases. The force on the shaft is variable depending on where maximum acceleration occurs. If it's all on the point of release end, the acceleration is greater than a peak force in the middle of the power cycle with respect to the dynamic response from the shaft. I don't think the Powermax will be a problem. One of the 350 rated bows probably would be.
i do the same as Randy Elmer does heavy is always better to hunt with 340 arrow 125 gr and 50-75 right behind the broadhead glued in too. reason keeps arrow straight in flight better and goes thru animal better too.

I personally consider that to be to light an arrow for hunting. Will it work yes. I would use 50gr brass inserts and a 125gr head. A soft cam doesn't require as stiff a spine as a Hard Cam. So when looking at the charts look at draw weight, type cam, arrow length/draw length. I tend to agree in general it is better to over spine than under spine.
All manufacturer numbers are not necessarily the same. I don't mean to insult anyone; but, check the spine calculations and numbers for the specific arrow you wish to use and use that manufacturers numbes/charts.
How do you know if your cam is hard or soft?
I like higher FOC but aint gonna slow my bow too much.
The heavies out of my recurve............would only be usable at spittin distance.
Like 17-21% FOC fine.
Running 340's out of a 54# recurve, 125gr head, 50gr added to insert.
Will run 300's out of my Oneida compound, testing yet to be done.
I have leftover 400s and 500s from other recurves.
Would like to just keep two shaft sizes in use.
