Are you still gonna try and work a blonde wulff?

I am gonna try blue-wing olives....skip the Adams....I am feeling frisky....lol

HoundGirl
1Minute- just tried to PM you...and it said your were not accepting PMs....you still interested in the Fly Swap?

HoundGirl
Okay...PMs have been sent...and I'll update the list as the responses roll in....

Yep, I'm nothing if not consistent.

What size you doing the Olives? I wouldn't go any bigger than a short 14.
You mean I shouldn't send them out masked in 8??? LOL...nah, 16 is what I am working with...

HoundGirl
Perfect.....
Houndgirl: Switched on the PM feature just now. Yes I am interested. The family spent the day relaxing around the house, and I just finished running off my contribution before logging on. If you will furnish a postal or shipping address, I will try to get them off this week. I'll also help out a little with your shipping expenses. Thanks for taking on the responsibility, and looking forward to the exchange 1Minute.
VERY cool....glad to hear it!

We have eight people, thus far....and a few people PM'ed me as back-ups....so it looks like a "go" on this end.

When I hear from the rest....I'll post the new list.....woooooooot!!!

Thanks,
HoundGirl

I hope he replies, I really wanted a Ginger Quill.
You'll get the GQ. I'm just back from a trip to the Ozarks, celebrated Thanksgiving with a funeral for a suicide. Sorry for the delay. Will have to tie between trips to Phoenix with my dad- medical stuff, down and back next week.
Houndgirl: Received the PM with an address. Will the address suffice for both Postal Service and/or UPS delivery. I ask because our local UPS system has limited hours, and I would have to make a mid-day trip back into town Will attempt to get the Parachute Adams off tomorrow if I get a response. Thanks again, 1Minute

HoundGirl
Ain't know way I'm gonna tie 14 tags on flies, have a hard enough time with the tippet.

Methinks everyone will be able to recognize a Wulff pattern, very fluffy with LOTS of hackle.
Depends on the quality of the replication!
Quit your bitchen....and just poke the tags(name and fly pattern) through the hook<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />!

No poking fun....lol....I am STRUGGLING with my wings....

HoundGirl
That don't look bad, does look like a LOT of thread at the head.
Crap! I can see I better tie 50 and pick the best 14 of the bunch to measure up in this bunch! That's a nice tie HG......

Do you coat them with Flexament or like product so they hold together?
I've only worked raw duck quils...but I've wondered about wing burners and/or cement for wings. I'll google flexament. Only started this recently...and I am still figuring things out.....

Always wonder about beauty verses function. Like, what might be purty....might not dance well when it hit the water...you know?!

thoughts?

HoundGirl
Ugly catches fish just fine. Just a bit of cement on the wings will help out, I haven't had the need for burners, but I like hair bestest for wings, hackle tips second....
Thanks....I like quil wings cuz they are purty....but they aren't the easiest mediuum to work with...

I don't even really know WHAT a burner is....can you describe what it is....thanks.

HoundGirl
Even those most finicky about tying will admit that some flies just get better with each additional trout that frays them. (But those tiers won't admit to the contradiction.)

Newbies often travel down a path to some frustration- once they've got some tying under their belts, they begin to improvise. But 99% of their creations fail. The dry won't float, the dancer plows under, the shiner swims on its side, the legs foul, the fly sits on its head, etc.

A proven pattern is just that- proven. An unproven pattern is just...

There's more to a well designed fly than just looks.
Then again, sometimes a cigarette butt speared on a scud hook can bring in a lunker!
Think of some brass tweezers in various sizes shaped like wings. Put a set of feathers in them, clamp down and burn off the excess, open and you have 2 exact wings (well almost).

There are definitely purty flies that are better at catching fisherman than fish. When you are in the middle of a feeding frenzy, you don't want to have to change flies because they fall apart after one or two fish. That's why I'm with Steelie on preferring hair wings for durability. My favorite dry fly is an old pattern called a Haystack, and uses deer hair for both wing and tail. A buddy introduced it to me on a day when my purty, "match the hatch perfectly" flies were getting snubbed and his Haystack was getting slurped up every cast. We fish lakes with the combo of big trout and weeds, and have had days when my whole supply got busted off in fishes mouths and I had to run in and frantically tie up more before the hatch fizzled. A simple, fast tie like the Haystack is great for that scenario.

Sometimes a fly that gives an impression of something good to eat works better than an exact anatomically correct imitation of the insect.
Pretty fly and a great job on the wings! I find it easiest to just tie them on the hook the first trip down with the thread, get them close, and use some dubbing or hackle winds to fine tune alignment as I work back up from tail to head. I have lots of quills in my boxes, but must admit I seldom fish them. Reason being, I can't tie the perfect aerodynamic fly. That being, my creations windmill through the air. The dry flies with their very erect wings are the worst. With extremely light tippets, I end up with a twisted leader giving the appearance of a pile of noodles dropped on the water with a tiny fly sampling sauce at the edge. Some of the issue might be due to too much false casting. With less air time, I'd probably have less twisting. Wet flies, where the wings are more layed back, are less of a problem. Most of my working flies are feather or hair winged. I have been doing some married (layers of different colors) quill wings on some recent steelhead patterns. They are beautiful to look at, but I have soooo much time and effort into their creation that the thought of abusing them at the end of the line is more than I can stand. So far they are just flybox dressing. Looking forward to the exchange. 1Minute P.S. An after thought.... When the exchange has been completed, I would enjoy a new thread with a posting from each member expressing their thoughts on the most effective presentations for their pattern.
What's the camera that gave you those great pics, HG?
HG,
Of course you realize that with the Swapmeister duites comes the burden of photographing and posting pictures of the flies for the group <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Here's the homepage of the swaps I usually participate in.

LOL..pics of the flies and complementary of me...

Just Got 1Minute's flies and they are outstanding.....and I'll get some pics of them....and post them as soon as I can. Nice work, man...REALLY!!

HoundGirl
Houndgirl: Since you have them (Parachute Adams) in hand, I will post my thoughts on their efficacy. With obvious top water action, I find parachute patterns work well in both still and flowing waters on a dead drift. A very very slight tweek or movement will sometimes attract interest in still water if there are lots of competing real McCoys about. The white wing really helps old eyes find the fly in shaded riffle/pool situations too. Unlike many traditionally tied dry flies, however, once they go under water on the drag, I find them completely ineffective. They likely don't look like anything a fish has seen before underwater. We have frozen down here in the past week, so there will be little fly angling for about the next 3 months. We can only open 144 square inches of ice (something to do with heavy folks falling through snowed over ice holes), and its too difficult to hit that 48 foot long 1/4 inch wide chain saw cut with my kinked up fly line. It also ices back in pretty quickly, and my skimmer's the wrong dimension. Tight lines and happy holidays to all, 1Minute
1minute
Have had a few guys that could really cast show me a few things over the years and the windmil effect you talk of, ending with a mess of spaghettied leader, is easy to correct. The best way to describe it is the fact you are trying to shove too much line out. A gentle retraction just as the line is settling will straighten things out before it hits the water.

When fishing tiny creeks and hitting tinier pockets the natural tendency is to do it automatically to get the fly in exactly the right spot. Thinking about that aspect of it as you are doing it should make it a natural transition when you are reaching for all the distance you can and still need to straighten that leader.

Would also ask if your leader butt is stiff enough...
art
Sitka: I suspect you are right about the distance thing, although I don't do much long tom work unless there is no other way to reach a fish. After years of missing strikes on long line, I finally realized that things go much better if I just wade over to the fish and use about 2 rod lenghts or less of line. Unless they are on shallow flats, I'm amazed how closely fish can be approached. This past fall I waded in, unhooked the fly from the keeper, dropped it in, and picked up a steelhead in about 2 1/2 feet of water without pulling any line off the real. As to leaders and twist, it's typically those hair like invisible tippets that give me issues with the quill wings. The balance of of the leader is stout enough to resist twisting. Be back tomorrow night. Have to spend the day searching the forest for a perfect Christmas tree. If all goes as usual, we will hike around, reject about a 100 trees, and go back and get the first one we looked at. 1Minute
Sorry I haven't posted the pics, as of yet. Things have been crazy around here....and this dial-up makes everything a real pain in the azz.

I will get them posted tonight.....

I am planning to finish my last ones.....later tonight!!

Can't wait to see everyone's work.....

HoundGirl
Here we go....here is 1Minute's Parachute Adams...

HoundGirl
I'll get mine off to you next week.
Just finished my contribution. Will send out tomorrow.....
VERY coooooool!! Can't wait to see everyone's work! I'll post pics...as they get here, woooooooooot!

Thanks, guys!

HoundGirl
I put my flies in the mail today. I originally said I would tie a Light Spruce for all but ran out of badger saddle hackle, so I substituted Dark Spruces for most of them. The difference being furnace vs badger for the hackle wings and collar. Both will catch fish. Merry Christmas to all!
Yea, yea , yea, I gotta do this. They'll be in the mail next Tuesday!
Well, they're done and will go in the mail this week. Tried a new type of epoxy and it didn't dry quite as clear as I like but alas they'll still catch fish
Mine will also be in the mail next week, but since I ain't gonna be around a Post Office till Friday they might be a BIT tardy.

Send me your addy again, cuzz I sure don't have it anymore.
Mine are done too, hope to send them out tomorrow.

HG, promise me you'll stay away from them with that ultra-macro lense of yours so the flaws don't show!
Mine will be in the mail tomorrow.
Cool....looks like the swap is falling into place. Sorry I have been so hit and miss. I've decided to put all the pics up at once.....with names, etc...once I ge them....

S'Head- I'll PM you my address....just don't send any nude shots<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />....

Merry Christmas, all...and thanks a TON for participating in the swap!!

HoundGirl
I'll update this tomorrow. Thus far, I've got about 7 sets of flies......and I am sure that the rest will be dancing into place this week....

Thanks, guys,

HoundGirl
I've got mine ready and they'll be in Monday's mail. I wasn't able to to the Parachute Stimulators that I wanted so I did a Baetis Krystalflash nymph instead.
Bait (!) and Switch!!!!
Riley and I have finally got ours ready to drop in the mail.
Sorry we are so late with them.

Oh yea he wanted me to tell ya that he changed his fly to a 'Caddis Fly Larva' <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
And what did you create for us, Elf?
Spoke to HG a little bit ago and she apologizes for not keeping things updated, but her dial-up and such is giving her fits. She will post as soon as she gets things ironed out.
art
I'm just learning so it was the basics for me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
How's that for an answer with no information! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
No hurry on my end, but I am starting to feel like I've somehow gotten cross-ways with an Elf, which we all know is major trouble........ <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Recon trip on the schedule for today, BTW, along with a winter Trico hatch in the afternoon. I'll have to do it backwards, that is, Blastandcast.
Elves are really good at skirting the subject <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

You'll know when you get them which are mine, they'll make great decorations <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />
But are ya having fun doing it? That's the real question!!

Looking forward to whatever they turn out to be.....
It's interesting to say the least..
I did include a Parachute Stimulator for HG to take a picture of to post and I'll be happy to give the details if anyone wants them.
Hey guys!! Sorry I have been gone....my computer decided to take the last week and half off of work....but she is up and running....FINALLY!!!!

I am waiting to hear from Blaine and Bootfishing.....then it looks like a roll, once I recieve flies from AKGrayling, Elf, and Hunterbug.

The flies I have recieved are AWESOME.....I think everyone is gonna dig them!

I'll keep everyone posted.....and I will, hopefully, get them out by the third week of Jan (a little late I know...but I think everyone got busy with the Holidays, and such)....

HoundGirl
Glad you're back up. Coulda used one of your little olives on Tuesday. The cripple wasn't the ticket........
LOL....doubt mine will even float<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />....LOL....sucks being new at something....but I tried. If it weren't for the damned wings....they would be perfect<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />...

Blaine and Boots will have theirs out this weekend....so it looks like a wrap.

When I get all the flies...I'll post pics of each one!

Thanks, again, guys and gal......this has been FUN!

Thanks for a job well done is the job <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Just image. I've had some swaps that topped 60 flies.
My flies are going out Express Mail tomorrow--Post Office wasn't open today.

We'll call my pattern "Blaine's Flashy Bugger." I have caught rainbow trout, steelhead, brown trout, cutthroat trout, largemouth bass, crappie, channel cats, bluegill, walleye, and pickerel on this fly in Oregon, Arkansas, and Texas fishing in Rogue River, the Little Red River, and farm ponds. It works from a dead drift, streamer style, and stripped; in still, slow, medium, and fast water. I like dark olive best, but I caught the steelhead on a black version. It is weighted and works with a floating line or a sink tip line.

If you are getting hits but not hooking up, then shorten the tail a little.
Glad you found time to tie amidst your record busting on the range! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

(Congrats, BTW)
My feet are draggging but I'm almost done......sorry for the delay folks
Ya just can't rush true artistic creativity.......or is it creative artistry?
Just gald I wasn't last........ <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
That's what I was thinking. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Last one to get their flies in has to run the next one right? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

SS
Hey, I'll run it......just might not tie it (grin)........besides HG is doing a fine job.....

Mine should be at her home soon but I'll only guarantee two things....1- there are no two alike and 2- they will catch fish......
Who woulda thunk that I wouldn't have been last........
An irrational female?
As opposed to?
I'll start tying mine now for the next one. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
The word from the flyswap mistress, whose computer is belching, is still waiting on one set of flies. As soon as they are in her hands, they will be out in the next post.
M
THANKS for covering for me, M!!

I am hoping to get the flies out to everyone by the weekend, pending Boots' flies<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />....

I'll post pics.....as well....now that my 'puter seems to be cooperating<knocks on wood, lol>....

You guys are gonna love the mix that came in!! They all rock!

I nominate Boots' as fly Swap Man.....for next year<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.....luv ya, Bryan...bwahahahaha<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />!!

Lovely pictures HG.
Great looking flies everyone!
Elf I need a lesson on making eggs. Mine always look like a fish already squished the juice out of "em...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Mine is the worst looking, but I promise it catches fish...............
The fish are the only judges with an opinon that matters, my friend.
Great job everyone. I can't wait to see them in person. And maby, just maby, it won't snow on a weekend between now and July and I can try them out.
I tried a new brand of epoxy for the backs of the Stoneflies and it didn't dry very clear. Oh well, aways next year and the fish won't care. Here's the recipe.

Hook - Size six streamer hook, slightly bent
Head - Tungston bead
Tail - Two Goose Biots
Underbody. solid wrap of lead
Body - Black Awsome Possum dubbed
Rib - Copper wire
Wing - Turkey tail feather tied in at the middle then folded forward then back and gills tied off and trimmed
Back - Epoxy shell

Keep the cast slow folks! Get wacked in the back of the head with one of these and you'll know it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
Awesome looking flies everyone!

Damn nice pics HG.
Nice job guys, I want in on the next go 'round.
Pugs-
Is it my eyes or is the eye of the hook you used canted 90 degrees?
Check out the Daiichi 1850 with its 'flat' or 'vertical' eye.

(But don't ask me why it's done.)
Elf, are you using Glo bug yarn or Mcfly foam?
Quote
Check out the Daiichi 1850 with its 'flat' or 'vertical' eye.

(But don't ask me why it's done.)

Correct. I chose that hook specifically because it's what I had 15 or so of when I got in the mood to tie <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I usually use them on small clousers I tie for smallmouth and bluegills and they seem to "swim" better
Another new goody to give me an excuse to go into Sportsman's Warehouse <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Fishkilla,
It was yarn..
I thought it was, you might try the mcfoam. A buddy o mine ties baseballs with it, they're nice. As for myself, I gave up on the egg, never got real consistant. It does help however to have a pair of ultra sharp scissors dedicated to eggs.
Hey Cast&blast could I have the recipie for the Quigley Cripple you tied?
Thanks,
Riley
Sure AK. (Nice job on the caddis larva BTW).

Tiemco 100 or other dry fly hook/thread to match the body color. The tail and back half of the abdomen are maribou, lt. tan or grey ususally but you can vary the colors to match your local mayflies. Tie in the tail then wrap the butts halfway up the hook. Ahead of that is a ball of dubbing, rabbit or synthetic. Then mount the deer hair wing pointing forward and clip the butts above the dubbing ball. Tie in and wrap hackle color of your choice on top of the wraps holding the wing down. Pull the wing up and out of the way so you can finish the head and you're done.

Have also tied it with a pheasant tail back end and caught fish on it.

Only apply floatant to the front half of the fly so the back half can hang in the film like an empty shuck. It imitates a mayfly that is having a problem fully emerging, an easy target for the fish.

If you are coming back down this way next summer it would be a good fly to bring along!
AKgrayling: I love the shape of the English bait hook, have carried them in hares ears for years, but have terrible luck hooking fish with them. Any hook set techniques that I'm missing? 1Minute
Some very nice lookin' bugs all! I can't wait to see them in person!
They came today HG! Nice selection and work all. Didn't need my own back but knowing how well they catch fish I'll use it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Alrigt thanks Cast&Blast those look like they wouldnt even be fair fishing with them!
Riley
Got mine today too!!!!!!!!! Enjoyed it folks and I hope I get to get em wet soon..........Here's tight lines to all of ya.......Boots
1minute....you might try putting that fly in the vise and gently twist the hook left or right, to get that point out to one side slightly for a better hook up.....
The mustad 37160 (IIRC) has quite a bit of offset already. That is the hook model Grayling used. I think the biggest problem is over-dressing... Keep them sparse and they work much better.

Thanks much, AK!

I got mine today, and was wondering waht that super-buggy dubbing fur you used came from?

So, now who's gonna be first to stick a fish with one of these?
I see, now that I look closer..... yea 1minute, what sitka said and it looks like AK did just that..... the off set works on the smallar flies too, (20 +) for hook ups...
I received my flies yesterday. They look great and it will be nice to have some classy looking flies in my box for a change.

The Spruce streamers I tied are part of my big brown harvesting kit. I decided to tie them because I needed a few for myself. Don't be put off by their size, the big bait big fish thing really works. I recommend fishing them at first light or for about an hour or so thereafter, at dusk or later and when the water is clear. Don't bother trying them during the middle of the day. They will only work when the big meat eaters are still out to play. Cast across and over or across and up, give a few mends to let the fly sink then begin a retrieve just before the line straightens out. Hits will come on the dead drift or when you give the first couple of strips. The Spruce flies look real buggy once wet so I am sure they will catch most types of fish. Good luck.
Houndgirl: The box showed up yesterday, but wife left it in the car. Got a look at things today, and it's indeed interesting to see the variety of things that work well around the country. I guess I should have spelled it out, but my intention was that you keep the fly box. Thanks for putting in the labor on this. As soon as we thaw our around here, I'll go forth and do a little research. Folks here are still drilling holes to catch fish, so it will be about another month and half before things break up. Looking forward to the next go around. Wade deep but stay dry, 1Minute
The dubbing i used was just died red/orange muskrat fur.

Mine came in on Monday... All of mine look great! Particularly impressed with the royal wulff.... I can't tie a wulff to save my life, especially smaller than a 12! Nice work, s-head.
This sounds an awful lot like the day after Christmas! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
As a matter a' fact......I felt like Santa's Elf while putting the packages together....and I felt a lot like Santa when I sent them out. I was the ONLY chick mailing 13 packages....and I had to keep letting other people go ahead of me<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />....

Glad it was a success...and everyone is enjoying their flies!!!

Last person to post a catch/pic of a fish....with one of the flies.....is Swap Master in 2008, bwahahahhaha<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />....

Thanks, again, everyone....for making this fun.....

Great call, HG!

I'm really glad you conceived the Swap and hope it wasn't too big of a pain to carry out.

I know a place that doesn't freeze all winter and the mayflies hatching this time of year look alot like your fly, so maybe next weekend...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
+1, that wulff is flawless!
Got mine yesterday. Thanks to all, especially Ms. Organizer.
If local post office could just do as well, this would be great. I'll watch for the next one, and participate if possible.
I'll be in town on Friday and I'll pick them up.

To be honest, I will be fishing with the Royal Wulff culls this year. I tied about 3-4 dozen Wulffs and cherry picked the best.

Ohhh gee thanks HG... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Mine came yesterday but they're in my wifes car so I won't get to see them untill she gets home this evening.
BTW, HG, can you post a picture of the extra fly I included?
So my wife got home and I got to see them. Great flies everyone! My wife was disappointed that the Nordstrom's box wasn't for her. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> The Royal Wulff is awesome. Come the first of the month and I'm fishing with these flies.
When did you have time to do that Steelie?!!!! Are you sure they didn't come in bulk from Sri Lanka or someplace? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Wish they made Blonde Wulffs.

The Royal Wulff is my FAVORITE fly and I wish I could tell you how many hours I spent practicing them. Peacock use to give me fits (it would break), but hair wings I have never had a problem with.

Quill wings I still hate and just about never do, same with spinning hair, usually can't stop it from spinning.....
Seriously, if you have never made a blonde wulff, ya oughta try it.......I've tied em up with yellow or chartruse abbs and had success.....
I used to have problems with Peacock untill I started tying it in by the stem instead of the tips. Now it doesn't break much. I've also seen people twist it around their thread and then wrap the thread\peacock around the hook but I never could get the hang of doing it that way.
If you put a good thread base down then a drop of glue and wrap /tie the hurl in, that helps too....
Picked up the flies today. Very impressive on ALL accounts.

I have tied the Blonde Wulff, just didn't have the saddle hackle I needed for it. I LOVE Wulff flies.....
How many hackles did you use on your Royals to get it so dense?
3 flies per feather, give or take...

The one you sent to S'Head???

Scott, can you snap a pic of that extra fly <tagged an AK special>....Hunter tied that for you.....so I didn't get a pic of it...unless I have this all messed up....which is HIGHLY possiblegrin.....

HoundGirl
Yep, I have it. Should be a dandy for King's, if I can get it tied on a 6x tippet...........
It's the Parachute Stimulator that I origionally was going to tie. I use it on 4X or 5X and it works for Stone flys, Caddis and maby Hoppers too. It's one of my favorite flies to fish.
Success reports should have begun trickling in...
2 weeks and I'll be fishing so I hope to post something then. We need a seperate thread for the success reports.

Agreed. I'm still on dial-up.
And up late.
Won't be using any of those flies any time soon. All the water I fish is locked up under ice and are closed waters to fishing until after june 15.
Yesterday we hit 75 degrees; the only ice we have comes courtesy of Amana. grin
