Anyone interested in continuing the tradition?
I'll swap a fly with you M.
Cool, so far each of us has to tie one!
I'll play again this year.
Jeff
Okay! Looks like I need to start a list....
1. castandblast
2. MsKeeto?
3. Troutfly
4. Ribka
5. GuideGun
6. MT
I'm pretty sure we can count in the scottish hare, but he's out of town for a bit. We'll get in touch with Rob P. Sitkadeer said yes as well.
The theme this year will be larva, though I have no idea how MsKeeto can out do her larva of yesteryear, presentation being beyond outstanding.
Just got off the phone with Scott Thornley. He's in as well.

9. Sitka deer (got the verbal okey dokey)
I am a beginner, but am in.

That was fast!!! Okay! Theme set, now a deadline. What time frame do you folks need? Mid March?
Wait, what?! Larva?! Really?!! And Thornley?!!!
This thing has morphed drastically in a direction that I didn't anticipate when I signed on. I may have to reconsider....
Mines ready... where do I send em??? (grin)
Trading larva. Has quite a ring to it, doesn't it?
Does it have to be larva? I had something else in mind that someone would appreciate.
The theme is larva, but no one's going to complain if someone deviates from the theme. Just beware, you will be considered a deviate....
Thank gawd I sent a pupa instead of a larva last year so I wouldn't have to choose between being redundant or deviate this year.....
I'm likely to be a reDUMBdant....
I don't think anyone will be disappointed, trust me
I guess that's a fine time, that way we iChat get them by April.
I'm pretty sure we can count in the scottish hare, but he's out of town for a bit.
He's back. I suppose that I could manage some Sparkle Green Rockworms in one color or another. Sign me up.

'Bout time rabbit
Hey! I was in AZ for a month, camping and looking for deer!
What do Aztecs look like in their larval stage?
You don't miss a trick, do you?
Yes, that's an egg. An Aztec egg, made from the same knitting yarn.
He asked about the Aztec's 'larval' form. You and I know that fish don't larvalize; I guess he's an ignoramous (
).
But that's not the Rockworm (caddis larva) I'll tie for the Swap. (Remember the flies I rushed up because
you lost my real submission...)
I'm enjoying the humorous banter. Carry on.
Thanks. My dad was always yelling at me to quit carrying on.
Me? Lost something??? I lost my mind, does that count?
Don't bring up ancient history.
You don't miss a trick, do you?

I'd say that a fish fry is "larvalized" and I'd be keenly interested in seeing what the Aztec Master could concoct with his yarns in that regard, were he so inclined.
What, exactly, would tickle your fancy?
I've tied Aztecs down to 16 or 20 (not really worth it- a small Aztec Leech is easier to tie and provides as much silhouette); the pic is of the Egg, which can go alone or with a cream veil of the gunk that can hang to eggs, and which can be tied in front of any of the Aztec patterns to create an Egg-Sucking Aztec XXX. What else is there? Have design?, will travel.
I was wondering of it's possible to do an Aztec that has the "egg" (yolk sac) hanging under it's belly. I'd think your yarn would give it a nice glow.
Having looked at your flies and being unable to visualize how you build them, adding a yolk sack is even harder to visualize
Here's a first attempt:
(Forgive the focus and color balance.
)
The current and strip should fold that back and meld it all up. I bet it'd pass.
You don't have to visualize the tying. It's easy. I could have you up and running in no time (just ask 1minute
). And your wife probably has baskets full of the acrylic knitting yarn needed. She wouldn't miss a few inches.
I can sure visualize that fly being greedily consumed by something big! Looks great. Very translucent. Thanks for taking the time!
FWIW, I have discussed the topic with 1minute and I don't recall the word "easy" being used in any part of the dialogue.
Waddazheno?
Really, I'd be happy to get you going. And I do consider it a very simple tie.
Re the above fly, I'll have to take it into the tub- gotta worry about too much on the bottom trying to overturn the fly and affect its ride (though that effect might be one of 'injured baby' and all the mamma fish might come to its 'aid').
I like the bit of color up front to potentially focus the strike on that area. I seem to get quite a few fish grabbing the tail and getting a free taste.
I'm game for trying to learn the tie, if you think it can be accomplished by a guy with ten thumbs to work with!
Got several ways to get in color, tied-in gills or eyes and Sharpies topping the list:
I've got your address from when I was SwapMaster, will send you some stuff.
I like that one a bunch!
That's extremely generous of you, thanks much!

Careful, I hear his daughter is the only family member that can tie a fly that catches fish...
Maybe I'd better talk to her, then. Bypass the old man.
I'd dispute that if it weren't for all the photographic proof to back it up....
Castandblast:
Now you've done it! One should never ask macrabbit for constructive criticism. It's like wiping your butt with an iron hoop. There is no end to it. Sorry. Couldn't help myself.
Fortunately for him, he hasn't yet asked for criticism. For all we know, he might accept my stuff and then skip the country. It wouldn't be the first time.
But, yeah. I might have another sucker pupil to nag coach. Heh, heh.
(Don't set the drag too tight, macrabbit. Easy does it. Reel him in slowly, now.)
Seriously, though, I have no criticism for perfection.

That's hilarious!
I've never had a sense of proportion in anything, much less fly tying, so this should be entertaining. A guy can pass a lot of mistakes off as "innovation" on anything but an Aztec.
You'll see. There's no 'sense of proportion' involved. If you can find the 1/2 and the 1 eye-length point (from the rear of the eye) and the rear of the shank (where the bend begins), all of the tie starts and proceeds without need for judgement. The darn thing is a cookie-cutter cinch. Even I can do it!
I'd get in on that one, but I'm 66 and probably won't live long enough to tie 20 Aztecs.
Hey, that's an idea! Maybe I should host a Swap and make the theme Aztecs! Who'd sign on?
I'm in for 12 with May Day Deadline.
You're an ambitious one! I've yet to hear about/see your first, and it's been months since you got the personal lesson!
Hey, that's an idea! Maybe I should host a Swap and make the theme Aztecs! Who'd sign on?
Hmmm. Not many 'first responders'.
Don't I count for anything? Just cause I have camera issues....
Despite what your shrink tells you, you are 'not many'.
I'd get in on that one, but I'm 66 and probably won't live long enough to tie 20 Aztecs.
You're scaring me! Can't wait to see what comes in the mail.....
Heck, he's scaring me!
(Sorry, 1, I hadn't noticed your post.)
I wish I'd had a chance to go hands-on with you when I visited a couple of years ago. I'd sure like to see what step is your hitch (and fix it).
Either everyone is scared or every moment is devoted to the perfect larva.
And there will just be the 3 of us in the Aztec swap... Someone needs to start the fire here.
Taunt them with "Chicken!"
I have a mysterious box in my man cave. Working up the courage to open it......
Santa was held up by a traffic jam.
When's Valentine's Day? I'm only half done.
(I've been tying a dozen. What quantity is needed?)
Ok I have an even dozen ready to go, where do I send them??
I dunno, alaska.
Badda-bing!
2/3 done, and an idea I had worked (for once).
All done! Another monkey off my back!
They're all prettily nestled in a box, will ship out soon.
Monkeys, schmonkeys. Nothin' like havin' a troll on your back!
Too true!
All you others had best get your flies in on time. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I don't want to step on our SwapMistress' toes (that troll-on-the-back thing gives me the heebie-jeebies), but here's a bit I've posted before:
Some suggested guidelines for Swaps-
Include something reasonable for return postage. $5 or less should do.
. No volunteer SwapMaster should have to shoulder the entire cost.
. But don't be over-generous. That could put an additional sense of obligation, with no way to fulfill it, on the SM.
Send your own fly box or other reusable container.
. Anything but nymphs requires more than a flat envelope, and putting together a dozen suitable boxes entails quite a bit of effort. As best you can anticipate, use a box large enough to fit the return flies (your engagement ring box might fit your dozen #22 midges, but will it fit the shark flies the others tie?).
Make up, if not install (not always packagingly convenient), your own 'toe tags', with fly name and tier handle. And avoid too large a tag.
. Another SM-saving chore.
Tie enough flies for all participants, including yourself.
. Keeps the SM's job simple, not having to track different fly sets.
Keep the SM informed.
. Being a little late is no big deal, but silence leaves the SM in anxious, and helpless, limbo.
Have fun with it all.
. That's an easy one. Should be first on the list.
Notes, for my own reference later:
Paton worsted wool - 00229
1 gallon water - right below boiling point
Rit Kelly Green - 1/2 tsp
Rit Golden Yellow - 1/4 tsp
Rit Lemon Yellow - 1/2 tsp
1 tsp liquid detergent
1 Tbs white vinegar
Immerse wool for 80 seconds, warm rise, detergent, then cold rinse.
2 min and 3 minutes of above mixture were overly saturated. Kelly Green and Golden Yellow at 2 min were way too subdued.
Future experiments at 40 seconds and 60 seconds may be fruitful.
Did your PDA break down or something?
PDA's break and get lost. The Intarweb is forever....
The cool thing is although I've been playing with how do do this for at least a month, these things tie quick. Literally half done now. Maybe even play around with the color a little more.
And besides, if anyone wants to try dyeing on their own, they might be able to piggy back on my notes.
Scott
Yeah, save these notes: we're all gonna dye sometime.
So, Woolly Buggers made out of real wool? I hope they're not also made out of real boogers!
Crane fly larva, a la Frank Sawyer's Killer bug, with a little bit xtra.
I also decided the recipe above got too dark when wet, though it looked pretty darn good dry.
Added another 1/2 tsp to the mix, at near boil for 2 min.
I'll have to cut apart the 6 I tied Sunday.
FWIW, if anyone wants to duplicate the original Killer Bug, splitting the Paton's 00229 into thirds looks very darn close. If there really is a tad more pink in the original Chadwick's 477, then a quick rinse in the appropriate dye would clinch it, I'd think.
But, thinking about real live woolly Woolly Buggers makes sense in the size 14 I tie a lot. I've been using some sort of Hareline micro chenille that goes by "blah blah dubbing" of some sort. This wool would work just as well, and I now have a lifetime supply of light green (not quite caddis green)
You going to the Pleasanton show?
Scott
Don't destroy them. Just send along both for the Swap.
I don't know that it really matters what material is used for a WW body.
I'm sitting on four shoeboxes of chenilles, so I don't think I'll need to look for a substitute anytime soon!
A size 14 Woolly Bugger? Isn't that called a Griffith's Gnat?
Doubt I'll make the Pleasanton show.
BTW, there's a tying expo in Redding in early April. I got an invite to tie, but don't have the time this spring.
Mine are enveloped. Soon on the way.
first flies are in! MsKeeto dropped 'em by today. I think I'm destined for the red lantern award this go 'round....
Looks like Scott's sending us a chemistry experiment more than a fly!
Mine are in the mail and emit no noxious fumes.
Mine went out the other day.
I'm tying my flies this weekend, then I need to know where to ship them out to.
PM sent.
If anyone else needs my addy, please pm me
Hey, I'm half way! Might still need to pray though......
Maybe it's time now to organize a Swap for procrastinators. Due date is June 2016, if that's not too early for y'all ...
Yours aren't here yet..... just sayin'
Don't blame me. It's all in the hands of these guys-- Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

I finally make the deadline and now I'm excluded from the next round?
There's still time to become a procrastinator. Do it tomorrow.

MisTress,- around 24Hour, without pictures it's not true. Show me the larvae!
2nd batch in! Thank you mcrabbit! It's special!
If I take pictures and post them, it will be like opening your Christmas presents before Christmas!
I can't think of a come-back to that. Bummer.

Not bad-- 5 of 12, and it's only two weeks beyond the deadline. I'm proud of my 'Campfire buddies! We're what made America great.
It's mighty quiet out there.
Too quiet.
Hoping that is the sound of feather trimmings floating to the desk top....lol
Thems is quiet things, allright.
I once thought owl feathers might be nifty for tying, considering their unique structure, but gave it up after a few tries. Just couldn't find anything worthwhile to do with them. Other experiences?
Well, lots of folks have issues with spey wings... those incredible barbules on owl feathers would have to make them a shoo-in for the easiest to tie wings ever...
Not that I would know, you understand, just speculating...
Really!
Yea, I bet they're sittin right next to the yeller hammers......
Wow, I thought I read somewhere the deadline was June 1. I've got to tune in more often. I've been more or less spun around by my family here and haven't much of a clue what has been going on.
I didn't get the sophisticated gene in this family.

I suspect they would make a pretty cool wing on most Muddler style streamers.
Nah, I don't think so. The grammar seems okay to me (making allowance for the colloquial use of 'pretty' and 'cool').
Slipping in 'Go Rangers' to every post, maybe?
Back in my school days, my teachers would liberally sprinkle my homework and tests with the abbreviation of 'So Precocious'. I was So Proud!
You guys are riot! I opted out of this because the first three months of the year are a busy time for me. If I had gotten in, I could have actually been one of the early birds, as I have a light couple of weeks coming up.
As to deadlines and exercising your products: When our party is headed out hunting/fishing, and the departure time is 05:30, one is simply left behind if he's even 30 seconds late. We wait for no one.
The way things are going, you can still jump in.
You can whip out a dozen simple larvae in two evenings.
Remind me to stay out of your groups. I've inherited a notorious gene for lativity.
Yep: gr = grammer correction.
Go Rangers?????? I don't follow sports of any type other than hunting and fly fishing, occ NASCAR but only for a glimpse of Danica.....LOL
You've got Kelsey Grammer proofreading your stuff? You must be some connected poobah!
I'm good but I ain't that good. Just had teacher in high school that wielded a mighty mean yard stick.....
Uh-huh. I wasn't learned nuthin' in school, neither.
I must have scared away castandblast, as 1minute jokingly predicted. I sent him some stuff; haven't heard from him since. How do we arrange for a cyber search party?
Dang, I've been too busy to even get on here and find out how much trouble I'm in. Will be April before I get a break.
Like 1minute said, if the train needs to leave the station without me, I understand!
Sorry guys!
He's been found! We can stand down the Army and the National Point Guard.
From your schedule, you must be a tax preparer.
MissT, crack my box open and take a peek inside. It's been so long- my larvae might have pupated and hatched. Let me know if I need to tie some replacements.

Perhaps I should send damselfly eggs again. They might stay young long enough to be distributed.
Then again, maybe not...
Not something I would stake the lives of young larva on....
Maybe a pair of adults, then?
(Not the California type!)
You feed and pamper them, let them keep laying eggs, and then you send along whatever generation seems appropriate.
I guess that might work.....
I had only one goal this year, and that was to not be last. Hooray!!
So, seeing as how I was a seriously lazy ass, here's the recipe and description.
Cranefly larva, with a little help from the ghost of Frank Sawyer:
Hook: Umpqua 200R, size 8.
Body: Hand dyed Paxton wool, 00229.
Appendages: Dark Olive flex floss
Thread: 6/0 light olive thread
Weight: 20 turns .020 lead
The color of the larva when dry, is way too bright, and way to light. Let it get nice and soaked before fishing.
Scott
I'm beginning to think that the New Year's resolution of several of our members was quite the opposite--to make every effort to be last.
Oh the larva will be tasty!
Announce that to the stream prior to casting. Can't hurt.
BTW, are some of you using 'larva' as the plural? Larva, larvae.
(I had to take four years of it, learned almost nothing. Almost.)
Keep trying. You'll get there.
I promise to get in on the 2014 session. If I'm timely, they might go out with this year's run. I'd suggest moth-balling those that are presently being held. Also...
The group needs to get some lawyers and legal up on several potential facets of life/death. Folks could die, be jailed or committed, and one would have figure out how to handle a variety of issues during dispersal.
Oh, my goodness! That's scary!
I expect that the dilatory ones will now hurry their submissions in, so threatened with having to deal with lawyers.
Picture the matron at the institution opening the box of LARVAE intended for the committed one - surely further repercussions.
I wonder if by the time we get our boxes, the larvae will have not just pupated but evolved.
I might open mine to find some barnacles with tentacles and spectacles, lecturing me on classical Latin!
(( MissTreated knows me well enough, I trust, to not take me seriously (except when I yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater (which I do often, just for kicks)). For the rest of you- it's all in fun; I can survive another week or two without a box of bugs. When you see that a post was made by macrabbit, add a mental
to the nearby text. ))
Love the Hareline sticker in the fly shop today... "My fish eat Hare"...
Since they unveiled that slogan, I've not been near more water than fits in a glass. (The cover scents have reached their limit. I'm wondering if Lyman makes a sonic cleaner large enough for me to take a bath.)
Just dawned on me that your alias is applejack...

Congrats, rob p!
Now, if the rest of you can get yours in by Valentine's Day...
And what's with that Sitka deer feller? Can't you keep your domestic help in line?
I will try and get some flies put together this week. We shall see.
"They also serve who only stand and wait."
Almost May. Wasn't due date middle of Feb?
I think some of our tiers are using the Mayan calendar...
Do y'all want me to just divide up what I have and mail them out?
Have you spoken with the foot-draggers (including your husband!!!!)?
They're just larvae, after all (the flies, not the tiers)- a dozen can be whipped out in half a jiffy, and our lethargic playmates ought to be able to manage that in the coming week.
C'mon guys. You volunteered!
I've only talked to them if they've read this thread.....
Don't you have pms? I mean, PMs.
castandblast hasn't posted on the 'Fire since mid-March, but it was to say he'd get a break in his schedule in April.
Sitka deer has been wasting tying time posting all over the board.
ribka, too, should put down his mouse and pick up a bobbin holder.
Bootsfishing said
Mines ready... where do I send em??? (grin)
back in early January. Was he lying?
GuideGun's response a couple of weeks ago sounded encouraging. Nothing in the mail yet?
Perhaps we should threaten to call their employers, say their job applications indicated that the companies would be glad to discuss their performance...
A bit of garlic butter might help.
Is that legal in Alberta?
Is that legal in Alberta?
Yep I do believe it is. But we are kinda crazy here.
Helps to wash em down with an ice cold Canadian.......probably should go barbless just in case they hang up though.
Oh, where's your sense of adventure?
I double dog dare ya to go first lol
Could be a "Hold my beer and check this out!" moment.
Throwin' my arms up in the air. What'd y'all want to do? I'm ready to give up on the rest and just mail them.
Has hubby submitted some grubs?
I vote just mail them, if thy have not sent them in by now, probably not going to see them
I think most of us have them to you so might as well go ahead and mail the ones you have.
Snooze, they lose!
I guess not-- just got my box in the mail.
But I got gypped!!!! None of my flies came back to me!
MissT, you need larger return address labels. I couldn't read the package from farther than 47 yards.
I got my flies today. Very nice.
All,
I tried to divided them up the best I could with 12 flies tied by each, but needing to send out to 7 people. Some are doubled up. If there was a question, or whatever, you didn't get yours back. (especially macR and MsKeeto)
If there is a problem, or a complaint, please send me a pm. I'll fix it.
No problem, no complaint-- so no PM.
But I'd very much like one copy of the cream grub I tied. I didn't make an extra for my collection, expecting one back. I really like that little guy; I dreamed it up for the Swapsters, but that special ribbing idea is going into my 'keeper' bucket.
I'll send it with the ants. Somehow I got 2. What a cool haul of larvae. Great job everyone.....
Reckon I'll be watching the mailbox. Cool!
I think most got two of each.
Thanks for sending one back to me.
Yep, down here during the wrong time of year. Season isn't open. Not that I'm down South anyway...
Guess there are some flies waiting for me upon our return.... cool.
Someone better post a fish photo before 6/17, otherwise you'll be seeing your hard work being chomped on by a bluegill. Them fishies will eat anything... Well, at least the little ones will.....
Scott
Hey Mac, I thought your cannibal larvae ate themselves up months ago. You are trying to trick us again.
I no longer know what they've done.
During the course of our waiting they were supposed to have pupated, evolved, gone through many generations, etc.
Not finding any in my return box, my first thought was that our SwapMistress lost my flies. Again.
I don't think I have ever lost your flies.
OK- "temporarily misplaced", then.
Like I occasionally get 'turned around' when out hunting...
My apologies to the swap folks for mine not being there..... I had a batch tied up and they didn't make it to Miss T's home. Started on another and just couldn't get em done quick enough. I will not do another not unless I've got a dozen or so before the swap starts. Take care and happy fishin!
I will not do another not unless I've got a dozen or so before the swap starts.
That sounds a bit extreme.
??? ....laffin..... as in if I don't already have a jump on having plenty tied up before...
You've a few full boxes, have you?
OK, OK,..... what I'm trying to say is if I can't start tying when a swap is starting up, I just wont join. No offense, I have just been terrible on the last few and have been lame in doing my part.....and I might loose a dozen or so again.
Which reminds me...
Nice dye job, Scott. That has the lack of uniformity of a natural somethingorother.
I like the picture of the caddis larvae. Close match. So what's with the big, shiny bead on the imitation?!!? Ya wanta weight it, slip some lead in its underwear!
All of these things should succeed as enticers. Go fish.
(Who messed with the thread title? SCOTT!!!!)
Anyone caught any fish lately? Hmm?
Still waiting for the rivers around here to be fishable again after our floods. Gonna be a great late season I think.
To heck with the rivers-- just roll cast from the downtown cafe patio!
LMAO! Actually I took a look today, should be able to get out on the S Sask in a few days. Way down and almost clear. Going to fun re-learning the river as pools and holes will certainly have changed.
The Bow is going to be a real challenge. A friend who guides on it sent me some pics shortly after the water started to recede. Wow is all I can say. Whole stretches of the Bow that were famous are gone or radically changed. Incredible.
