What are you all running for powder on your 7mm-08 120-150 gr bullets?

Going to try Ramshot Big Game and Varget at the recommendation of Pharmseller.

Also have some H414, RL-15 and H/IMR-4350 I will try if the first two don't give me what I am looking for.

This will be with 120 and 140 grain bullets.

140 Accubond and 48grs of H4350 in my two

50 grains of Big Game under a 120 grain Ballistic Tip
Posted By: 358WCF Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/24/20
An upper mid range load (around 40 gr?) of crunchy old IMR4064 worked real well for me with 150s.

Ditto

3031, 4064, IMR 4895, RL 15

RL15, H380 and Big game. H380 worked very well with 150gr partitions, while Big game worked better with the Hornady ELDX.
Posted By: Highoctane Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/25/20
I have used RL16, H414, Varget and Big Game . All have been really good with 140-150 NBT's and 140 gr Sierra GK's. Currently I am using Big Game with 150 gr NBT.

Just shy of that charge with 140/145gr bullets in mine. Around 2,700 in 18-20” barrels.

Daughter’s rifle shoots a book max charge of H4895 with the 120TTSX for 3,000fps in a 20” barrel.

Dad’s 18” Ruger American gets CFE223 and the 120NBT for 3,100+, which was surprisingly good.

RL 15/ 120 BT
RL 17/ 140's BT
Biggame/ 150 eldx

For you all using the 150 grain bullets in the 7-08 what are the advantages of using it over the 140 grain?

I have a 7-08 on the way that will be used for whitetail to 300sh yards but 99% of the shots will be under 100 yards.
Posted By: lastround Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/25/20

big Game, RL 15, H4350, and Varget. One of these will do it all. I too prefer Big Game.
Posted By: Pharmseller Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/25/20
Resistance is futile.
Posted By: smallfry Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/25/20
Hey this a great, unfortunately I don’t have Big Game on deck. Now I hafta find some.
What primers are you using?
Posted By: Pharmseller Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/25/20
It’s worth the search.

Watcha got on the powder shelf?
Posted By: GunTruck50 Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/26/20

I,m using PP2000MR, RL17, RL16, Big Game, W760, Hunter, Norma MRP and RL26. The MRP and RL26 work good for bullets

over 150gr. I shoot a lot of 120gr Barnes TTSX in my TIKKA .
Posted By: Kodiakisland Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/26/20
Varget for 120s and H4350 for everything heavier.

For shots beyond 300 yards. I like the 162s for really long range stuff in my 7-08.

This thread made me pull out some 7/08 sized brass.. and try some AR Comp which I have a bunch of..

i sorta use mostly 140 grain bullets and down when I play with the 7/08...

With 139 grain Hornady SPs, I was pretty impressed with the small tight 3 shot groups it gave...

test group of only 10 rounds, so take that with how many grains of salt ya want...

two of the three groups were a clover leaf at 100 yds...

without looking up the MV from the load data I referred to, I do recall it was more than enough to do the job
with that weight of bullet... 2800 to 2900 fps MV out of a 22 inch barrel, Howa Action...

140 TTSX and varget. Shoots .5” regularly. Away from home now and don’t remember the charge but it kills coyotes to zebras just fine.

I have said this before, and I'll say it again - I have been using the Ken Waters load, 43.0 grains WW-748 with a 139 Hornady flat base bullet since 1991. I have substituted other bullets of 140 grains with good results. It has been accurate in six or seven 7mm-08 rifles I have owned.

One of the best loads of all time.
Posted By: ruffcutt Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/29/20
The Hornady 139 grain soft points and H4350 was the first load I tried in my 7/08. Shot great, my intention was one load, one rifle. I should have stopped there, it would have served me well. But, you know you find bullets on clearance, good prices on blems and you end up a variety of 9 different bullets from 115 grain HPs to 162 Amax.
Posted By: NTG Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 11/29/20
So RL16 is shooting great, and I can only get varget to be "decent" with a 139btsp.

With the 120bt, I'm having a hard time getting RS big game to shoot well (I know, it's great for most people). I need to play with it more.

I threw a few loads of staball6.5 under the 120 (basically on a whim) and it shoot surprisingly well.

RL16 is also showing promise with the 154sst.

The 150 gr NBT bullets shoot a little better than the 140's in my rifle.

Big Game is a great powder in the 7-08 not doubt, but it's not the only one (by far actually) that produces very accurate loads. I've got extremely accurate loads and good velocities with RL15, RL16, IMR4350, Varget, and IMR 4451 in both 120's and 140 gr bullets.

But where to buy said powder(s)? Quite a shortage grin

Has anyone tried IMR4166? Supposed to be IMR answer to varget
Posted By: 280Ackleyrized Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 12/07/20
Have a TC Venture and plenty 140nab and H4350. Whats everyone running powder wise for that one?
Posted By: Bearcat74 Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 12/07/20

48grs in my Tikka
Posted By: OXN939 Re: 7mm-08 Loads - 12/07/20
Anyone else loading Hammer Hunters? About to do some final tuning to load development this week, and have two loads at or under MOA with 41.0-41.5 grains H4895 and the 120 grain Hammers. Seems like a real sweet spot for the caliber- a copper mono doing about 2850 should do the trick well for anything from Whitetail to Elk.

Yep that

I've used 4320, 4350, R19 and Big Game and havent had bad results with any of them. the 7-08 seems very forgiving to me.

hopefully, the right answer is a powder you already have in inventory since no one else does!

IMR4451 & Big Game, both are winners for me.
