How fast do you like to push 140's out of a 7-08? My 2 books show low 2800s. Anyone getting them closer to 3000 with good accuracy? These are C&C bullets, not monos.
Posted By: Fotis Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
2800 is a sane level.
Posted By: ruffcutt Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
2850 with H4350. Have some Ramshot Big Game to try which is supposed to give it a boost flirting with 3000fps.
Posted By: sherm_61 Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
You can't get enough 4350 in a case before its to full to get past 2850, Win 760 will get you 2950 with a 140.
I found that out about 20 years ago when hornandy came out with the light magnum stuff and claimed 3000 with a 139 so I bought a box and sure enough so I pulled a bullet and low and behold there was ball powder in the case so I bought some Win 760 and got really close to 3,000 fps.with Nosler 140 Part.in a factory Rem 700 24" barrel
Posted By: Jordan Smith Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
2850-2900 fps is reasonable from a 22" barrel.

Yep. I get right at 2,700fps with 140's, H4350, and a factory 18.5" barrel. Somewhere near 2,800 is what I'd expect from a 22" barrel with that powder. Some of the newer offerings like RL17 or STABALL might indeed bump it up to that 2,850-2,900 range that some mention.
Posted By: TeeBone Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
I've cracked 2900fps with RL-17 and IMR4007 in a 23in bbl, but never 3000fps. It would be interesting to hear from someone who's worked with STABALL 6.5 in the 7-08.
Posted By: bbassi Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
My barrel is 24 and right now I'm playing with I4350. What made me ask is I have 2 sources, Lyman #5 and the Hodgdons website. Hodgdon's says 46.5 max for I4350, but the Lyman lists 48 as max. I'm working up slowly but at 46.5 I'm at about 2770. I think another grain and a half would be too much, but I want to go till I get pressure. .2 gr at a time now.
Posted By: ruffcutt Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/25/21
Just checked my data, 48 gr H4350, win case, rem 9 1/2 primer. 139 grain hornady soft point flat base. 24” barrel, 2850 FPS.
Posted By: gte901m Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/26/21
Stop at 2,900fps from a 22”. Only a few powders can safely get there.

Many powders can reach 2,800fps.

I’ve shot whitetails with both 2,800 and 2,900 muzzle velocities; they all fell over.
Posted By: Deans Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/26/21
With Big Game I get over 2900 with a 24" barrel. CFE223 I get 2880 same rifle. Bullet for both loads 140 NAB,
Posted By: Bearcat74 Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/26/21

48grs H4350 and 140 Accubonds are 2780-2790fps from my two 22” barreled guns.
Posted By: GregW Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/26/21
140's stop at 2,900 from a 22". Only a few powders get there.

This dude fell today from my wife's 7-08 at 12 yards. Her MV is 2,670.

2880 with Big Game and 140 Partitions. Max charge per Nosler and a magnum primer.

Kills everything you point it at.

H4350, RL15, Varget and Big Game will you in the 2800s out of a 22" bbl with 140 cup cores.

Big Game works great under 139gr GMXs mono.

Timely thread. Model 7, 18.5". Using IMR-4350 behind 140 gr Partition. 2.800". RP brass, 9.5s. Started 45 gr 2410 fps, 46 gr 2480 fps, 47 gr 2520 fps. All accurate, no pressure indications.

Next test 47.5 gr, 48 gr, and a 47 gr charge substituting WLR for the 9.5. Hoping to match Winchester and Hornady factory loads that chrono 2550-2575 fps in this rifle. Rem CLs are near 2675 fps.
Posted By: rabst Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/26/21
For many years, I used, in two different 7mm08s, what was then an under book maximum load of IMR 4064 (45.0 gr behind 140 gr Sierra SPs [Sierra Rifle Reloading Manual, 50th Anniv. Edition, listed a maximum of 45.4 gr]) for 2920 fps in one and 2960 fps in the other, both with 22 in. barrels. Both were accurate loads for those rifles.

I never had any pressure signs with either, and approaching hunting season here in south Texas, I often spent a lot of range time in 90 degree [plus] weather. I also had excellent brass life with both.

But, I no longer have any more of that particular lot of powder. And, Sierra has backed down their maximum load to a considerably lower charge for this powder. I've found another accuracy node with one of the rifles using IMR 4064, but it chronographs under 2700 fps.

I'm in the process now of working up loads with Big Game for each rifle. With 47.5 gr Big Game, I'm getting 2830 fps and 2880 fps in those respective rifles using 140 gr bullets. Need to fine tune for accuracy, but I think 2800 fps is reasonable.

I've got a .280 Rem if I really need 3000.

2850 fps with 140 grain Partitions/Accubonds in a Remington Model Seven SS with a 20” barrel.
Posted By: GunTruck50 Re: 7-08 how fast? - 02/27/21

My Tikka will do 2900 FPS with several powder the Best first RL17, PP2000MR, Hunter, and W760. All but one with 140gr Accubonds. All the

speeds are less than 2920FPS.
Posted By: Stormin_Norman Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/01/21
I use a max load of varget with 140 Accubonds at about 2820 from a 22" tube for my most accurate load in my T3. I played with bullets and powders but that combo just works.
Posted By: HaYen Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/01/21
2447 with great accuracy. I was getting 2700'ish but I opted for accuracy
Posted By: OldTimeHunter Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/04/21
Just a bit slower than a 7x57.
Posted By: rdd Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/04/21
I get 2925 with BG and 24” barrel

My dad’s T3 shot 140 AB at 2850, good enough for a one-shot kill on a big 5x5 bull. Through and through tight behind the shoulder. My handloads.

Nosler says a max load of Big Game will get you 2953fps with a 140gr bullet.

Nosler is also using a 26” barrel. Subtract 25 fps per inch from 26” to 22 1/2” and you get 2878.

I get 2880 with 140 PT and I’m not gonna argue over 2 fps.

I got a 5 shot average of 2865fps with 47gns RL17 & 140gn Nosler Accubond. Rem 700 with 23" bbl. Other powders that give similar results in my rifle include H4350, W760 and Alliant PowerPro 2000-MR.
Posted By: himmelrr Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/11/21
You can get awfully close with IMR 4895 but it is just easier to stay around 2800 or so.
Posted By: MtnHtr Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/11/21
Best I could do with 2 different 7-08 AIs was 139s at 2950fps. One 7-08AI had a 22.5" bbl and the other at 23".
Posted By: bbassi Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/17/21
Figure I'd circle back around to this now that I've had some more time behind the trigger. My goal is always accuracy, but I like to push them as fast as possible and still keep consistent 1" or better groups. I really wanted to be able to shoot 2 specific bullets with this one. 120gr NBT and 140 Partitions. I could push both of these faster I guess because I'm not seeing pressure yet, but the accuracy is there so I'm going to leave it alone.

120NBT @ 3020 with a ES of 32fps using 42.8 gr of H4895
140 partitions @2944 with a ES of 27 using 47 gr of 760

Next I have some hot core 145s to play with and maybe some 140 TTSXs
Posted By: JGRaider Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/18/21
140's at 2944 are over pressure I assure you, whether you recognize it or not.
Posted By: lastround Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/20/21
All three of my 7mm-08’s have 22” barrels and with 140 gr bullets I get a hair over 2800 fps with all three. My opinion is that to try to gain any more velocity would not only be futile, but I would be over the sensible limit. I don’t think there is any way to safely get to 3000 fps with a 140 gr bullet out of a 7mm-08. And why would a person want to do so? They sell 7mm RM’s every day.

Looking at these numbers, I'm going to want to re-chrono my loads. I am using a pretty anemic load of 42.0grs of W760, while doing load development I was more interested in accuracy not speed and I can keep a three inch 2" inch group on a 5" plate at 300 yards all day long. I may have to revisit my choice of powder and load.

What type of accuracy are you folks getting at 2700 - 2900 fps?

You wouldn’t believe me.
Posted By: mike7mm08 Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/27/21
I run a 140 grain ballistic tip over 48 grains of H414 which is said to be the same powder as 760. A fair level over a lot of published data. Runs me right about 2850 in a 18 1/2" barrel. Accuracy? As said above you won't believe me. Seriously the hotter I run this gun the more amazing the groups get. Seriously I have seen this gun put five in just a fuzz over a quarter inch with the right person behind the trigger. My old man was a hell of shot with this gun even though it was mine. With me behind the trigger just under a half inch all day long.

As for pressure signs. Nothing scientific. Bolt lift is fine cases have as many as five loadings without issue.
Posted By: HaYen Re: 7-08 how fast? - 03/30/21
My load for the 7-08 is anemic but it's a tack driver using 140gr NBT or Absolute Hammers. My notes say 42 grns of w760 averages 2624 fps with an ES if 14. So yeah not a speed demon but as long as I know my dope, I got no problem take that cow Elk out at 200-300 yards.
Posted By: AZmark Re: 7-08 how fast? - 04/03/21
I have 2 rifles in 7mm08 one has 20" bbl and the other a 24"and recently chronographed the same handloads though both rifles. Load is 47grs of W760 and Rem 9 1/2 primer with a 140 gr Nosler partition.

20" bbl chrono at 2700-2750

24" bbl chrono at 2900-2920

I killed 10 seasons of Whitetails & Axis with my 280’s averaging 2820 fps with 150 CoreLokt commercial ammo. If you can do that with your 7-08, no need for more speed.

2790 with 150 eldx, 7mm-08. 30 fps is nothing.
