I've had three .300 Savages, a Remington 81, a 99 Savage, and a Remington 722 bolt-action. I tried a variety of powders, including H380, 748, 2230, Varget and H4895. H4895 was the best in terms of accuracy with 150 Sierra SP, a good deer bullet. My old notes are sketchy, but look the 180 Hornady SP also did fairly well. I sold all my .300s years ago just to simplify things; too close in performance to the .308s which I kept, but the .300 is a fine cartridge.

You could always take a gander at Nolser's data:

W748 works well in my .308's, but I've move on to better powders.

I’m using IMR3031in 3 loadings don’t have my notes with me but using 110grain barns ttacx and 130 grain ttsx and 150grain hornady interlock. I got a couple of pounds of 748 at home just haven’t played with it in 300sav but my nosler manual does have loadings listed using 150grain bullets with 748 you can also look up their data online it’s the same as the book.

I use 42 grains of WW-748 with a 150 grain bullet in my Savage 99s in 300 Savage. With 180s, I use 41 grains of the same. My rifles have tolerated both loads, but I advise starting a bit lower with 180s. The 150 grain load goes around 2,500 fps and the 180 grain load goes 2,400 fps.

Other good 150 grain loads are 40 grains of either IMR 4985 or IMR 4064. These two are accuracy loads from Ken Waters. I think Waters also liked the 748 load.

I have used LEVERevolution in my 99s. In the 300, 44 grains with a 150 grain bullet goes over 2,600 fps, and 44.5 grains went around 2,700 fps, which is what Hornady claims for their factory load with that powder.
Since the OP is specifically asking about W748 - not other powders or other cartridges - I’ll oblige. Under Nosler 150 BTip bullets, 42.0 grains of my lot of W748 was safe with no stickiness opening the action. Velocity was 2580 fps, not breathtaking but it was accurate, killed deer very well and shot plenty flat enough.

With 180 RN CoreLokts I used 40.0 grains of W748 for 2416 fps. Decent accuracy but never shot game with it.

I have found a big load of 4198 behind a 130 Barnes edges 3000 fps and kills anything legal to shoot in the lower 48 right now.

I use 43 grains of H 4885 with the Barnes. It’s not what he ask, but this load works real well on game.
