Since I was finally able to replace the M 700 .270 that was stolen years ago I'm going to be reloading the .270 and I need to add some powder suitable for it.

Bullets will be Hornady 130 grain interlocks.

So, Any favorite powders for this cartridge?

H4831, or the sc version.
Posted By: Ghostman Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
H4831 for 130 & 140's.

RL26 for 150 & 160's

H4350 shot very well with 130 grainers through the one I had.
Posted By: MagMarc Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
H4831 either version.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
What have you got?

What can you get?

The most accurate load I ever fired in my pre-64 was 58gr of H4831 and those Hornadys. Stopped right there as shots here are close, and the extra speed wasn’t needed.

Check the Hodgdon manual. Lots of choices will get you 3000 or better, including StaBall 6.5, the new kid. Make a list of possibles and start looking. Since you are starting fresh, you might consider something you can use elsewhere if it doesn’t work out in the .270, but I’d still lean towards the H4831 if available. According to several people I’ve talked with, the RL22 is tough to find. I gave my unopened jug to a friend.

4350 or 4831 have been my go to. I did have a 270 that hated 4831 but loved 4350. I also have a 270 that hated 4350 but loved 4831. Go figure.
The one I have now, loves 4350

IMR 4350
Posted By: pullit Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
Oh, I guess there are a few 4350s out there on the market, I was speaking of IMR 4350 as well. Also IMR 4831

I like Reloder 16 first, and IMR 4350 second.

Posted By: rabst Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
H4831 is the perfect place to start. Either of the 4350s also. My finicky 270 shines with VV N-160, but I haven't been able to find any recently.

I just picked up some RL-23 at a LGS that I may try next.
Posted By: keith Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
My loads:
60g H4831-130g-Can not remember the primer
58g of R#22, Fed 210
55g of IMR 4350, Rem 9 1/2

All time most accurate loads in my Remington 700's was
140g Nosler ballistic tip, 58g of R#22, cci 250, bullet kissing the lands, shoots a bug hole

My brother took the same load, used the 140g berger hunting vld & Classic Hunter and shot bug holes.

130g Hornady flat base performs similar to a Nosler partition.

Thanks for the replies everyone, It's much appreciated.

I'm making a list of the suggested powders and making the rounds of the gun shops this afternoon.

The beautiful thing about Reloder 26 is the velocity. I get 3025 fps with book recipe and 150 gr Nosler Partitions, along with great accuracy.

By comparison, same rifle, I was only able to get 2850 from the same 150 gr bullets.
Posted By: pullit Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
26 is the ticket with a 150 but it did not do well in mine with 130s.
Posted By: saddlesore Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
I think it was Jack O'conner's load of 60 gr /4831 in a 270/130gr bullet that was made popular almost 75 years ago and nothing has changed much

For decades I used the 4831s and a couple years ago tried RL16 after great success in my 6CM.
The RL16 is amazing with 130TTSX and RL26 for 160NPs.
Posted By: CRS Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
I have many shot up many pounds of H4831, reg and short cut through my 270's. I always start there.

Have successfully used IMR 4350, 4831, Rel 22, 26,and Ramshot magnum too.
H4895 for pleasant low recoiling loads.

I have 16 pounds of IMR4451 that I have not even started using. I know it is discontinued, but it will last me the rest of my life if I find a good load.
Rl26 and 4350 have been my go to in .270 for 30 years... lots of good choices out there though...

IMR4350
Posted By: HuntnShoot Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
Lots of great powders for 270. I've used everything from IMR 4227 and 150gr cast bullets up through R-26 and 170gr Bergers. I like the 4350 burn range for bullets 110-130 grains, and R-23 and R-26 for anything heavier.
Posted By: Bugger Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
RE 19 with 160 grain bullets, H4831sc in 130 and 131 grain bullets, and H1000 shoots 130 grain bullets well too. They all shoot under 1 MOA in my favorite 270.

I mostly shoot 130 grain bullets in my 270. I have 140's and 150's but have not developed loads for either yet. The 160 grain partitions work well on elk, in my opinion.
Posted By: RCflash Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/10/22
Began reloading with for my pre-64 Model 70 in 270. About 35 years ago.

my loads along the way..... all using IMR4350

130 gr Partitions, 54 gr, CCI200, Remington brass.

150 gr Partitions 52 gr, CCI 200, Remington brass

130 gr Hornady Interlocks 54 gr same primers & brass.

all shot very consistently. dont recall that any of these loads are max.
the deer didnt know the difference.

I stayed with the 4350. Why mess with a good thing?

The 270 is somehow tolerant of a lot of combinations. Good shooting.

H4831SC over 130 NABs or BTs, Win brass and FED210s. 3170 Out of my Nolser M48s 24" barrel.

It's basically O'Conner's load.
Posted By: 84Mtn_EER Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
When I had a .270 and was loading for it, 57gr of IMR 4831 was a go to load for any bullet in the 130class. I also had good luck with Reloder 16, and H 4831sc. When I bumped up bullet weight, I used Reloder 22 for 150s. I never got around to trying it, but I would imagine that Reloder 23 would be excellent as well.

IMR4350 is what i load for friends
Posted By: bonepoint Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
I have been working some load development on a couple 270s. I have been trying RL26 ,RL16, Hunter, H4831sc and various bullets 130-150g.

One thing I have noticed is the H4831sc loads take quite a bit more powder than the manual say to match velocity and pressure. It has been this way with the last few pounds I have bought, all from different lot #s. Book max loads were very low velocity and no pressure signs, but about 2 grains over seems to fall in line - this was the same for both rifles. I am up at 62.5g with a 130 bullet and getting around 3,080 fps and no pressure signs.

All of the other powders tend to track velocity and pressure very close in these two rifles.

Anybody else seeing this with H4831sc? I just don't like going that far over book max (future trap) and have been leaning towards different powders because of it.
Posted By: mathman Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
I haven't bought any in a while but I have noticed several comments over time about H4831 being on the slow side of what it had been.

I'm not up on the newer powders. For a quick and easy deer load I'd grab some 130s off the shelf and sit them on top of 55 grains of IMR4350.
Posted By: PJGunner Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
I only run 150 gr. bullets in my .270 so my prefered powder is Winchester's long discontinued WMR. (Winchester Magnum Rifle) If I didn't have such a good supply of WMR on hand, I'd probably go with H4831SC or IMR 7928. I just don't care all that my for 130 gr. bullets in my .270s. Sorry.

I only shoot 130s with H4831SC. Started on 4831 when it came in a paper drum.
Posted By: sidewinder72 Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
I loaded for the land owner 130 grn bullets with a stiff dose of H4831sc. I use H4831sc in 25-06 also. Great powder and hard to beat. We always use BR primers.
Posted By: Stammster Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/11/22
After trying many different powders in my 270s with 130gr bullets, H4350 is my favorite in terms of velocity and accuracy (53-55gr). IMR-4064 is my second favorite, because it shoots well and is the cheapest due to the charge weights (49-51gr). I also like the “snap” of the 4064.

Like others have said, you need a lot (full case) of H4831SC to get decent velocities. I saw no better accuracy, and was burning 10gr more to get similar velocities. It’s also more of a push with respect to recoil.

RL26 will give crazy high velocities with 130s (>3250 fps), with a full case. However, I don’t like to push cup and core bullets that fast, and at a reduced load it’s a bit sooty/dirty. However RL26 is “the” powder for 150gr in the 270 Win.

So you can seriously feel the difference in the recoil of different powders generating the same or similar velocities?
I have not done enough reloading to have any experience with this.

Yep. It’s even easier to tell in a semi-auto, as you can also “feel it” in the timing.

Growing up and before I went looney in the 70's and 80's. That is the exact load our neighbor put together with a Hornady 130gr SP for Dad's and my 270's. Killed an awful lot of deer and antelope with it.

Have not had IMR 4831 or 4350 on the shelf for a very long time.

Posted By: Buckbandit Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/15/22
I load for 3 270s. When I started reloading H4831 was highly spoken of and has a long history with 270. So that’s where I started. No doubt h4831 works and I was pretty satisfied with h4831 until I tried h4350 in one on my 270s. With 130 grain bullets and h4350 I get better velocity and accuracy In all 3 of my 270s with h4350.

Posted By: Seafire Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/15/22
My favorite load with a 270 has always been with RL 19, 160 grain SMP Nosler Partition...

MV is like 2950 out of my Model 70....

The deer hunting bread and butter load, is pretty simple and still gets the job done...

30 grains of IMR 4198, and a 140 Ballistic Tip.. running like 2400 fps or so...Plenty enough for 200 yd blacktails..
the Model 70 also is one of those that had the BOSS on the end of the barrel, so that further reduces the felt recoil..
which 30 grains of IMR 4198, doesn't have a lot of recoil to begin with.

but it will certainly do the job every time I've needed it to.
Posted By: Old__School Re: Favorite .270 powder? - 11/15/22
4831 ..... both versions for 130gr and 140gr pills. If you can get your hands on RL26 ..... with 150gr partitions.... great load.... don't even have to try hard to get 2950 - 3000 fps and 1 MOA .

Gonna do some work with RL16 and RL23 this winter.... we shall see.

Actually the .270 roll out in 1923 predated 4350 which predated 4831, at least commercial availability.

Wonder what reloading rifle powder was available in 1923?

Or, wonder how long before people started reloading it?

Lots of suitable powders for the.270. However, my experience suggested slower powders work best. The 4350's, 4831's and others in that range. I have not been able to try R26 extensively, but it's looking good too.

With all the talk of RL26 in this thread my question is:

Has anybody been able to find any to purchase recently?

I haven’t seen a canister of it in nearly 2 years at any LGS.

I love the stuff too! Shooting 140 Accubonds at nearly 3200 in my 270. I’m down to my last pound of it and starting to get a little nervous.🥴
Would love to pick up another couple pounds of it…..🙁

Lots of powders are in scarce supply. The goods ones seem to be unobtanium. Bought mine when Trump was in office, before the Covid craziness started.

Have burned up a bunch of Varget in my new 338-06 and 416 Remington Mag. Would like to restock, but am saving what I have left for a future Africa sojourn.

I've had good results in a Rem 783 and 129LRX with RS Hunter. Tried Accurate MagPro but accuracy was very poor. In a Winchester XPR, I settled on Superformance & Hornady 130 GMX. If I had more large rifle primers I'd be experimenting with Re23, RS Magnum, 4831SC, & 7828SSC. But LR primers are unobtainium... Mark and Belle

Have you tried 4064 in your .416 Rem? Swift factory ammo uses 4064. Got the from Bill Hober, Swift CEO.

So, Any favorite powders for this cartridge?

Staying on point with the 130g Hornady, H4350 is my first choice (last I looked it was available), with H4831 close behind (it's available). As mentioned it takes a more H4831 than H4350 to obtain the same velocity, usually the same accuracy.

The H's are more temp stable than the IMR versions in the 270, I have cold weather tested 8-9 different powders with 150's and 130's in a variety of 270's and the H powders have always been the most stable. More stable than RL26 too, but it's stable enough to be confident it'll shoot to the same place.

For the 160 NP, IMR7977 works great for one 270 I have a load for (Yeah I know, fat lotta good that does with the discontinuation of the Enduron powders). I have killed three elk with that load, two of them through both shoulders of rag horn bulls at 50-60 yds. On both occasions the bulls turned and ran towards me and I shot them again, and did catch one bullet in the opposite quarter.

Also the 160 NP shot flatter than the ballistic calculators predicted. Based on my shooting out to 400 yds I speculate the advertised BC may be conservative.

Interestingly, IMR7977 wasn't worth a hoot with 150g NP's in two of my 270's--slightly slower than H4831 and not as accurate.

Have not, used my last 4064 messing around with my 338-06's. Of course it is unobtainium also after a cursory look.

My remaining 4064 is dedicated to my Bud’s .416 Rem. He doesn’t shoot it that much.
