My father in law just gave me 2 unopened cans of H450. I know it's been discontinued a long time ago. I also heard it has a similar burn rate to H4831. I need to dig through my older manuals, but I thought I would ask here. I load 243, 270 win, 7 RM, and 300 WM. I figure I could use it up in one of these. Thanks

I believe those cartridges would be good candidates.

My Hodgdon #25 manual lists loads using H450 in all those cartridges.

Be very careful with 450, like any government contract there were fairly wide "tolerances" in burning rate. I had a couple pounds that was quite slow, very slow, you couldn't get enough in a 6.5 Swede case to keep the necks form smoking badly. I ended up using it in a .264 Mag, with good results. Just a few years later, I picked up some more, still Hodgdon, different style sealed container, wow, much faster, a case full in the Swede produced sticky bolt syndrome, flat primers and a sporty 2800 fps with a 140 gr bullet...eek, thar be dragons in a mil surp '96. My library of obsolete reloading books tend to verify this with a pretty big spread of 'max charges' between mauals.

Off topic, but that is a powder I am familiar with by reputation and name... but will admit, I have NEVER seen a can of it...

I started handloading in the 90s and it was out of production back then.. long time out of production...

H-450 was very good powder for a 7 Mag with 175gn bullets.

It was discontinued then brought back for awhile then discontinued again.

The only powder that would break 2900 ft/s with a 175gn bullet in my rifle.

The original lot of H450 was a lot of surplus WC852. In the late 60's Lake City Arsenal loaded 30 US Gov (.30-06) M2 ball with WC852 ball powder rather than the IMR4895 used previously. The lot Hogdon bought was too slow burning to meet spec for the 150 grain M2 Ball load.

H450 worked well for me in 150 grain .270 and 180 grain .30-06 loads. Its should work well in the same applications that would call for IMR4831.

Hodgdon #25 indicates H450 with a burn rate between H4350 and H4831.

I think H450 earned a reputation of being peaky and I believe it is a two fold thing. It's old tech powder so it probably is temperature sensitive like H380 and H414. Add that to it being used in lots of 243s and 7 mm rem mags with heavy bullets, Two somewhat peaky cartridges.

Back in the eighties I tried it in my 7mm Weatherby. I never got the groups I was able to achieve with 4350, 4831, 7828 and MRP.

in my pre-64 264 Win mag. shoots very well with H-450

I have hodgdon #26, but I do appreciate the offer. I was curious to see if any of you had any experience with it. The cans say "newly manufactured". Thanks to all who responded. I hate to throw away powder these days. I still have a pound or 2 of H870 to use up in my 264.

My 270 with 130 BTSP shoots lights out with H450. Even better if you could find H570.

Used it in a 243 years ago and it produced small groups.
