I have always been intrigued by 150 in a 300 and recently bought some Norma whitetail ammo. The only weight they offer in that lineup is 150 grain. They are just Spire point bullets which I understand may “blow up”. Has anyone hunted with 150’s before In 300 and what was your experience? I have swift scirocco 2’s 150 grain and I may have to load those so any suggestions on powder for 150 grain bullets would be appreciated. If the spire points can hold up to 3200 fps then I’ll just hunt with those. Thanks

On deer, a fast-moving cup/core 150gr bullet is a very impressive bullet to stick in the lungs. I've shot the 150NBT from 3,200 to 3,400 is a 300SAUM and 300WinMag and they were rough on stuff. Some of the old-stock bullets were more frangible and did not always exit, but most animals didn't wiggle too much after being hit. I'd avoid taking hard angling-away shots, but they should be okay otherwise on deer-sized stuff.

Never been much of a fan of 150's in the 300WM but RL22 is my powder of choice from 150-180gr bullets

Back in the late 90s I shot four Texas Hill Country deer on one hunt with my "first" 300WM. All from 35 to 50yd shots. I had purposely bought some Federal Blue Box (back then they were loaded with the Sierra 150 Pro Hunter bullet) 150s, I wanted that "blow up" factor, ha. What I got was a "poor mans partition" instead! It zipped through the rib cages, making a 1/2" entrance and an 1 1/2" exit...but...it "syphoned out" the torn up lungs/tissue! They were hanging out the exit side! ha I kid you not, never saw nothing like it. They all ran under 20yds and dropped without a kick, great deer load! Now, that's an example of only four small whitetail deer. So use them and make sure you take pictures for us! Have a ball Pard!

It will kill them, but so will a hand grenade. I don’t go any lighter than 165gr in a 300 WM with a strong preference towards 180 grain bullets.

I've seen that happen with 270Wby factory softpoint loads. They were 100 or 110gr loads bought by mistake. They tugged lung tissue right out of the exit.

When using cup and core bullets at high speed I aim behind the shoulder. I've seen some extensive meat loss when shoulder is hit.

When my camp mate had his 257 Weatherby he always wondered about what would happen on a full broadside, just behind the leg shot with the 87 grain Hornady loaded in some factory ammo he got with the rifle. He never used anything other than the 100 grain Interlock in factory or handloads. They were pretty decisive.

A friend of mine shot a couple with 150 gr. in .300 Win. Mag. He said it exited on both but, very fast expansion. I'm sure at long range they would be ok though. He went to 180 gr. later on.

I have shot lots of game with 150;s in a .300 mine was loaded to just under 3400fps. Awesome. Game just wilted !! Place your shot.

I don’t mess around with anything less than 180 gr in the 300 Win Mag. 180-200 gr is the sweet spot for the 300 Win Mag IMO. My favorite loadings are the Hornady 190 gr Interlock and Nosler 200 gr Partition. That’s the special sauce of the 30 cal Magnums. They can shoot heavy bullets fast to better retain energy and buck the wind.

We rolled blacktail after blacktail with 150’s in 300 Winchesters. Stay off the shoulders if shots are under 100yds or you’ll have bloodshot jello. They sure shot flat before we had good scopes though.

Yep. It said Sierra 150 Pro Hunter right on the box too! My Brother In Law used a handloaded Sierra 150 BT in his 308 and they were killers. I thought I would get the same thing, even knowing that Pro Hunters were a bit tougher, I figured the WM velocity would make up for it, ha.
