I'm also curious about this combo. Come on guys, let's hear your experiences with the 375 Ruger.

ldmay375,

I'm looking for some powder charges for that bullet as well. Do you have the Alaskan version? Get it at Chimo's?

Bearstalker,
At the present, I do not own one. Typical gun-nut story, I could not decide which one. I want a 23" barel, but stainless. was comtemplating an African, adding coating and fiberglass stock or Alaskan adding new barrel and different stock. So, after all this comtemplating and purchasing 4 boxes of 270 gr Spire Point factory loads. I ran the rounds through my 338 Ruger Mark II and they fed fine. The rounds did Not feed well through a couple of my M70's (338 & 7mm)that I was considering for donners So the end result plan is I am going to purchase a SS Mark II in 338 (used will be fine), replace the barrel, bead blast, add sights,Timney trigger, either a McMillan or Rimrock stock. Anyway long story but that is where I am at, hopefully to be completed by March. (edited to add) Ran the rounds through my Kimber 338, still not as smooth feeding as the Ruger. Just scored a McMillan Classic this morning for the project.

I took the 375 Ruger African to South Africa last July. Prior to going, I had Safari Arms in New York load me up 4 different sets of rounds. I took them out to the range and shot them off a lead sled at 100 yards. One set was extremely accurate in my rifle, putting 4 round through the same hole. I could put a quarter over all 4. I ordered 60 of them. They were loaded with 270g TSX and the box said they were loaded to 2800 fps. I took 8 different animals with them in SA, including an eland shot through both shoulders. I recovered that particular bullet and you can see it expanded perfectly. Obviously, Safari Arms didn't tell me the powder he used, but I pulled a bullet and measured 74.8g of a powder that resembled RL-15 to me. That would be in line with the data published in Shooting Times last July. I loaded a couple rounds up with the 270 TSX bullets and 75g of RL-15 and they just about grouped the same but the velocities were 100-150 fps slower so I doubt that the powder is actually Rl-15. For what it is worth, my chrony said the Safari Arms rounds were leaving at around 2950 fps.

If I were you, go to the Palmer gun show this weekend at the fair grounds. I recall seeing a few stainless Ruger's chambered in 338 Win. Mag. (I believe it was three of them, all brand new) for under $450.

stephenwhite,
Thanks for the input and the great pictures. Did the rounds chronogragh 2950 or 2850? Quiet honestly, I will very happy with 2750 and anything plus, well will just be a plus will. I will not feel hampered even with 2700. I am a big fan of the H&H (any most anything above .30 cal up through .458) , but I am looking forward to about the same or more velocities from a shorter lighter gun than my M70 H&H.

Bearstalker,
Would love to have made the gun show, but headed back north for a 3 week work hitch in the morning. The prices that you mentioned is what I was hoping to find. Well, at least I have a start on the project as to the stock. It should arrive this coming week. Next step is deciding on the barrel maker.

stephenwhite,
What scope do you have on your rifle ?

The rounds were chronographed 2850. Sorry if I mistyped that. I just have a Leupold Rifleman 3X9 scope on my African. I have several VariX III's, but they all had homes already. It worked great for me.
