Does anyone know what powder Winchester uses in the 270WSM/150gr Power Point load, or is it something not available to reloaders.
I get the best groups and highest velocity with this factory ammo so I'll use it for deer hunting and use my reloads for off season practice.
Unless I find a better reload.

I've tried- H4350, H4831, RE19, RE22, H1000.
only H4831 gave me good accuracy. and single digit ES with a Hor 130 SP
Bullets tried- Hor 130 SP, Hor 140 BTSP, Hor 150 Sp, Nos 130 and 140 BT. The Hor 130 SP has shown the most promise so far.
I have not had a problem getting good velocity just not getting good accuracy.
I will sacrifice velocity to get good groups.
So far I'm getting groups in the 2-2.5 range with most reloads
The Hor 130 SP has got me down to 1.25-1.5 so I'm going to play with it some more.
Gun is a Weatherby Sub MOA
Factory Winchester 150PP shoot under an inch consistently and a velocity of 3183@60 degrees/5000 ft

Thanks

I don't know what Winchester uses but I've gotten good results using MagPro and the 130 grain Hornady SP. With a sub max load I get 3272 fps and .6 to .8 groups from my Tikka T3.
I just started loading for this cartridge so I have a ton more work to do. I especially want to try the 110 grain Barnes TSX or TTSX. I'd like to be up around the 3500 fps range with these.
Every load I've tried in my Tikka has been under 1.5"
Still anxiously awaiting the opportuniy to try the new RL17.

MagPro and Fed 215 Match primers.

My best results have been with the 140 gr Nosler Accubond, Federal 210 primers, and 65.0 gr of Vihtavuori N-165 with Winchester cases. I didn't have good luck with H-4831 accuracy or velocity wise. IMR-4350 didn't have the velocity. Reloder 19 shot some impressive groups with the Sierra 90 gr HP and the 130 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, and also showed good velocity potential. Accurate 3100 or MagPro would also be worth a try, as I have had more than satisfactory results with those as well. But the absolute most consistent has been the Vihtavuouri N-165 with Accubonds.

Velvetant,

Below is one of the replies I received from the Ballistic Lab manager at Accurate Powders, dated 2002, back when load data for the 270WSM was almost non-existent.

This is the data supplied to Accurate Powders by Winchester, regarding the use of Magpro in Winchester's Factory offerings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dan,

They used magnum primers throughout WLRM's

As far as COL/AOL is concerned one needs to stay at the maximum SAAMI COL to
create as much capacity as possible.

Caliber: 270 WSM Winchester Short Magnum:
130 BST Bullet:

C.O.L: 2.860"

Start load: 68.4grains (3000 Ft/per/sec)

Maximum load: 76.0 grains (3,347 fps). 62500psi

140 Fail Safe Bullet:

C.O.L: : 2.860"

Start load: 65.3 grains (2850 Ft/per/sec)

Maximum load: 72.5 grains (3,168 fps). 63000psi

150 Power Point Bullet:

C.O.L: : 2.860"

Start load: 63.8 grains (2750 Ft/per/sec).

Maximum load: 70.9 grains (3,085 Ft/per/sec) 61800psi.

The Chamber Pressures are included above .

I think I read some where that they have been using Win 780 which is now available.

Another plug for Magpro. I've seen it give the best accuracy and velocity in 3 270 WSM's using 130 grain Sierra's and TSX's.

Have you shot these loads yet? From the information I have those loads may be way to hot for your rifle. My Nosler reloading manual shows 60.5 gr as max, my IMR reloading manual also shows 60.5 as max. I have never used IMR 4350, If it was me I would pull those loads and back off to 57 gr and shoot that load while carefully looking for signs of pressure, excessively flat primers and sticky bolt lift are an indication of high pressures. If the 57 gr load is ok then work up in 1/2 gr increments while looking for signs of pressure, Good luck.

I agree with Freddy. That seems like a stiff load for that burn rate powder. I wouldn't want to use it unless I had worked it up very carefully. How did you come by that load? I loaded one load I got from an internet source: It gave a load for the 140 grain Nos AC in the 270WSM of 74 grains of MagPro for about 3300 fps. I backed off 2 grains for a starting load. Well, with the first shot I saw smoke coming from the action - not a good sign. The bolt opened easily but when I examined the case the primer WAS GONE! I did not find it in the magazine well and it did not fall out when I ejected the case into my hand. I even disassembled the rifle looking for that primer, as far as I can tell it evaporated. I was glad to have all my extremities. The load that I settled on was 70.5 grains for 3250 fps.
