Which powder do y'all use for 85 gr bullets & up? Cases will be either Rem or Winchester using CCI LR primers.

Anything 4350 to 4831-ish should be good. I've run both (IMR variety).

Looked in tthe books last night & IMR 4831 looked good.

Not having tried many I won't say it's best, but H4350 is really good.
I've settled on Ramshot Hunter.

IMR4350 always worked well for me.
Posted By: GregW Re: Best Powder for the .243?? - 04/27/09
H414 was good for me.

H4350 worked well for me with the 100gr bullets, but Varget always worked better with the 85gr pills in my rifles.

For 95 and 100 grain bullets, either H4350 or an incredibly old batch of H4831 that I've got. The old long-cut H4831 has the desirable property of almost filling the case, which the other powders do not.

I use H4350 with everything from 70 to 95gr bullets. The lighter bullets are at full case volume and this powder delivers the best velocity and accuracy of any I have tried.

H414,IMR 4350, 4831, in that order.
Varget for 85 gr. and under,H4831 for 95 and 100 gr.

95-100 gr bullets, with WW brass, H4831 has been doing well for me.

I wanna try some H4350 sometime though.........

IMR-4350 has worked for me for nearly 40 years with 100 grain Nosler Partitions, my only change was to bench rest primers when they came out.
Good shooting,
Marcus.

i use sierra 85 gr bullets and a max charge of imr 4895... it is an extreme accuracy load...
100 gr bullets i am using h4350....
70 ballistic tips and RL15
Posted By: johnw Re: Best Powder for the .243?? - 05/02/09
the 70 ballistic tip in hornadys factory load is my current .243's most accurate load...
i have never achieved a handload with this rifle to beat it...
the most accurate handload achieved with this rifle is the hornady 100 btsp and 42 of h4350...

Using Barnes TSX 85gr, H414 has been a standard powder for me and gives outstanding accuracy in several rifles so chambered. But, I've switched powders now that I have discovered Hybrid 100. Slightly improved accuracy (aggregate of three five shot groups @ 200yds) but with velocity increased 187 fps. Neat.
For 85gr on up, I'd use IMR or Hodgdon 4350.

For speed with 85 grain bullets, Magpro was great. I got near Weatherby velocities from it. However, out of 3 243's only one shot it well. However again, none of the 3 243's really shot much well and moved to new homes. Just for what it's worth.

I use H4350 for 87 gr and 100 gr
In my long barreled Rem. 40X 45.5 gr. of I7828 shoots well with 100 gr. bullets.

I use H4350 with 85g bullets, and it delivers the best accuracy and velocity I've had ...
I tried RL-7...Did not work well. I tried varget. While it worked great for my 30-30 it did not do well in my 243. IMR 4350 worked good but it took a lot of trips to the range. One day while looking at the empty shelves at my local gun store, I noticed one can of Winchester 760. I bought it, loaded it with 42 grains (used Hodgdon load data for 90 grain bullets) and 87 grain Hornady bullets. The first trip to the range proved to me I had a winner.

RE15 and 85TSXs work well for me. Varget is too fast IMO. Lost about 150 fps with Varget. 4350 had a slight vel nod but was not as accurate as '15 in my rifle.
RL22 to RL 25 and everything in between

Thus far with 85 grain TSX's I've tried Varget, IMR4350 and IMR4831. The 4831 has shot the best, but only slightly better than the 4350. Both are consistently under 1". I couldn't get the Varget to work in my gun with that bullet. I have test loads loaded up with H414, H100V and H4350. Gonna see if any of those will out shoot the IMR4831.
Agree with swamptoad-Win760 has worked best for us,whether in the .243Win. or the .243 WSSM----regardless of bullet weight we tried!

I'm quite some distance from the handloading bench & my journal,so I do not recall exact loads, but nothing we load for rifles is at Max...usually 2-3 grains under Max.

But what really turned the trick was when I mentioned it to an old-timer,who told me: "Win 760 don't work right without Magnum primers, boy!"

He was correct. At least in these 3 rifles.

Joe....I generally use IMR-4350 or IMR-4831 with the 90 to 100 grain bullets, with Nosler Partition bullets. I have lots of these powders in kegs. I use H-380 on those 80 grain bullets, coyote medicine and H414 on the 55 grain bullets.
None of the 243 rifles I have owned never showed any real preference to powders, they shot everything well. I liked IMR 4350 because it worked so well in my 270 and 30-06. H414 is a great powder also,
