Does anybody use non - magnum primers in weatherby loads? Im looking for some for a .257. & .240. All I have and can find are CCI Large Rifle. Any info would help . Thanks.

Large Rifle primers will work in any cartridge using less than 70 grains of powder and some as large as the .375 H&H. I prefer Winchester or Fed 210 though.

But I do prefer a magnum primer in cold temperatures for cartridges using around 70 grains.By cold,I mean in the -20 range or colder.

I mix and match pending on powder burn rate and how capacious the case is. For example I have used 215M with retumbo in the 25-06 and Wim large rifle in a 240 WBY with IMR 4350 orwin large rifle with H4198 in the 458 Win magnum---no reason for a mag there. Whatever they like.

On the other hand huge cases like the 378 416 etc do need hot mag caps.

If one is using the slower powders that come close to filling the cartridges, they should work just fine.

I use std primers in my .240 with good results.

It is no surprise that the .240 works well with standard primers - it has less case capacity than a .30-06 does!

Some slow, heavily deterrent-coated powders will not light off reliably with standard primers in one of my .257s - H870 is one that comes to mind. I had very high extreme velocity spreads and even one hangfire using CCI 200s under 115-grain bullets. Federal developed the F215 magnum primer especially for loading the Weatherby cartridges - there must have been a reason.

Winchester large rifle primers and minimum loads of I4350 work fine in the 300 Wby. Couple this with a 180 gr. bullet and you have a slightly warm .30-06.

The Winchester Large Rifle primer is as hot as some magnums.Believe I read that from a post Mule Deer responded to awhile back.

I had forgotten about this. Now that you mention it, I seem to recall that it is just a step below Fed 215's and about as hot (at least at the time it was written) the CCI 250 (or maybe it was Remington). But, I still wouldn't be opposed to using a CCI 200 with 75 grains of I4350.

While I'm typing and watching the Magnificent 7 Ride! there was a line that puzzled me. Lee Van Cleef seemed to have an issue with the fact that one of his men spent all his money on liquor, cards and women. Like that was a problem

just use standard primers, i have actually had BETTER sucess with them in the .375 ruger case than with magnums. and that is 90 grains of propellant. you would likely LOSE velocity by going to a mag primer in those cartridges mentioned

in the 240 wby u could use std primer because cases capacity is the same as 30-06 but the 257 wby has the same case capacity as the 7mm mag so i would use magnum primers in it
