A fellow mentioned to me that if a person were to hunt with a matchking he might try opening up the nose with a metplat uniformer.

I have never used a metplat unformer or even seen one much less hunted with a match king. I am thinking that a heavier bullet so modified might work real nice, like say any 30 cal over 200 grains.

Anybody done this?

The meplat uniformer won't make the matchkings any tougher. It is suppose to help with uniformity and BC.Rick.

i just started loading the 69gr matchking in my 1-9 twist 223 and i shot it through some milk jugs and it expanded like a game bullet it went through three jugs and found it in the fourth at about 50 yards i am going to try it on a coyote first before i shoot anything bigger

I used a Meplat uniformer on some TSX bullets. The deer I shot with them had a pretty narrow wound channel, it was like sticking a light sabre straight through the deer. With the TSX's at least I think the Meplat uniformer might have adversely affected bullet performance. Maybe not but I don't want to do my testing on live big game animals.

As far as Matchkings go I don't really see why you need to hunt with them. There are some really good hunting bullets that shoot so accurately why bother with Match bullets not meant for hunting?.........................DJ

He probably wants the higher BC for long shots. There are some videos of guys "testing"/shooting sheep with matchkings on youtube if you go there and search.

I used Matchkings in my 7mm Rem on elk for years, before someone said I shouldn't do that. The elk certainly didn't care. I use different slugs in my 30 caliber goto unit right now.

Back in 2004& 2005 I did a lot of testing with the 338 300gr SMK. I tried to find a way to get the most consistent performance out of them for extreme range shooting. first I tried weighing every bullet but the weight of the matchkings was very consistent, next I tried meplat uniforming. The 300gr SMK for the most part has a fairly un-even meplat compared to smaller SMK's.
My testing with meplat uniforming showed me a few things, it did make a bit of a difference with consistancy but not any better than just sorting out the really bad one's, it drop's the B.C. of the bullet quite a bit more than I thought it would, and it does make the bullet open up faster on impact.
In the end the secret to this bullet is measuring the bearing surface length. It is the best big game hunting bullet I have ever found.
I cant be of too much help on the 30 cal stuff though because I use the Berger 210gr VLD and the meplats dont need touched.

Yes uniforming does make a SMK open up faster but IMO they dont really need it. if you do decide to try it make sure you dont take off more than about .010"
