In all the powder burn rate charts it has Ramshot Big Game and Reloader 15 rite next to each other on the chart, meaning similier burn rates. However in the nosler manual with a 120 gr bullet big game maxes at 52 grs, while re-15 maxes at 44, Thats 8 grains difference. Also with the 140gr, big game maxes at 47.5 and 15 at 41.5 It would appear to me that BG has a much slower burn rate than re-15. The guy at my local Sportsman Wholesale said that big game is the exact same as WW-760. Any thoughts?
Just because one powder and another are next door on the chart doesn't mean they're real close in burn rate. It just means that number two is next after number one, with no others in between. Except for special circumstances. And those special circumstances can arise when various combinations of case capacity, bore diameter and bullet weight mysteriously come together. I have a special set of bones I rattle over my bench anytime I SWAG a load that isn't written somewhere or decide to substitute a powder. Downstairs right now are 10 rounds of .270 Weatherby waiting to have the bullets pulled. After further consideration I convinced myself that the load I used based on extrapolation probably shouldn't be touched off. And yes I've had a couple. It's Friday night.
shoot-em thanks for the reply, however big game is listed as the faster burning powder in a couble charts I looked at. Doesnt make sense

The burn rate of Big Game is fairly similar to 760 but they are NOT the same powder....

Just because they are similar on the chart as far as speed doesn't have any bearing on the CHARGE weights being alike. One is a ball powder and the other stick (Think regressive burn rate VS progressive).
if you look at a bunch of burn rate charts you will notice that here are often differences in where various powders fit on one as compared to another
Different powders in different cases can vary in burn rates. Also, in two different 7-08s, I have been unable to get anywhere close to Noslers 52-grain load.
Vihtavuori shows RE-15 and Big Game as the same burn rate, and 760 a little slower. However, I'm not sure that burn rate is all there is to powder. Some are more dense than others, and some have more energy.
