What's everyone running in their 270 hunting rifles?

I had great luck with IMR 4350, 150 grain Nosler Partition, Federal 210 Match Primer, Nosler brass. Shoots very well out of an old Remington.

Max H-4831 with 140 grain Accubond.
Posted By: raybass Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 02/16/11
Max load of H4831 and 130 TSX, same with H4350 and 130 TSX. Still need to try RE-22 with same bullet. MagPro also done me well before.
Long time fan of something like the Jack OConnor load, a case full of H4831, now using the SC version, under a 130 gr Partition. Last 2 seasons saw a trial with the 130 gr E Tip. It has performed beyond my expectations, with a bonus of minimal bloodshoot venison.
Trialed the TSX as well, accurate bullet, but for no objective reason, I do not like Barnes.
I trialed RL22, but could not accuracy on par with the 4831.

55gr of the new H4350, 130 TSX and CCI's.

Good load. The only thing I would switch is the powder to H4831 for the temperature insensitivity.

Re: Nosler brass

I've tried it in the 270 with 130 grain bullets and was not able to get on the top end accuracy node before I got pressure signs and loosening primer pockets.
I have really good luck with 60grs. H4831SC using 130gr Interbonds. As for back up 55gr. of IMR4350 with 130's. I use either 58grs of H4831SC, or 58.4grs RL-22 with 140's. I'm currently working on 150's with the 270 win, i plan on using H4831SC since its has been really consistent and with great Sd #'s.

Why H4831 over H4350? Just curious. I just switched from IMR4350 to H4350 for the reason of temp sensitivity.
Posted By: BRoper Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 02/16/11
H4831 works in just about any .270 made. Other powders work too but H4831 is "the" .270 powder. 60gr. H4831/130 gr. bullet my standard and favorite load for years.
Posted By: bea175 Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 02/16/11
Nosler 130 gr BT and Hog 4831SC
What? Only 1 guy using Rldr-22? My .270 Win. load is a 150 Partition and 57.0 grs. of Rldr-22. 1" groups and 2930 fps. out of my Pre-64.
Bear in Fairbanks
Nope, RL22 has been my #1 powder for a few years now. In my rifles it gave me top velocity with tight groups. I've also had pretty good results with Hunter and Magpro.

I prefer to use the slowest powder that still gives good velocity. Ideally I like to see the case full to the neck or even slightly compressed. Seems to me this gives more uniformity to the load than a part empty case with the powder sloshing around. H1000 may work too, if you can get enough in the case.

Mine's similar, but be careful working your way up ... Rem brass, Rem 9 1/2M primers, Nosler 150g Partitions, 58.5g H4831 gives 3030 fps out of the 22" barrel on my Rem 700 BDL been using the load for 30 years. Gives .5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards in my rifle. Start at 54g and work up SLOWLY ...

I've never done better than H4831 and 130 - 140gr bullets in any of my .270s. H4350 behind 110gr TTSXs was showing some promise last time I tried them.

John
It bears repeating.....H4831, 130 gr (I'll take a ballistic tip for play and an accubond for business) bullet, 3100 fps
59 gr. H4831SC 130 Hdy. SP. Shoots little groups in my M700 and is hell on deer and hogs back home.
Posted By: WyoJoe Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 02/17/11
With a Hornady 130gr over 60 gr of H4831sc elk fall over real easy.
Bear,
Count me in on the RL22. I use the same load with a 150 gr. Speer HC averaging 2925 fps. My 130 gr. BT load is 59.5 gr (? have to double check) averaging 3040 fps. What I really like is 3 shots of each load shoots into a combined sub 2 in. group at 200 yds.

WW brass is more consistent than the Nosler brass I've seen/used, and seems to last longer.

H4831 and the 270W go together like mom amd apple pie.

I get smaller ES with Fed 215's than Fed 210's--most of the time.

150 Pt's and an old Remington are perfect..........

Yeah, you can't beat a Partition and a good 270 rifle. For me its the best overall North American caliber. The 30-06 had military support, the .270 had nothing but excellent field results.

Bump, and looking for 150gr load info!

Getting back into the 270 bizness and kinda bummed thinking about the fact that I'm running a .308 with 150's as fast as my last .270 ran them..

2850fps

wtf?

check this sit for some good loads reported by shooters:

http://www.centerfirecentral.com/viewer.html

As always refer to a reloading manual.

I shoot a 110g tipped tripple shock with 57.5g of R#17 with a Fed 215 in win brass at 3550, 2" groups at 300 yards with a 3-10 scope...about the same trajectory as a 220 Swift.

55 grains of IMR-4350 and the 130-grain partition in W-W cases with F215 primers.

Nope! One 270 loves 60.5 gr RL22,WW brass and Fed 215 primer with 130 Nosler Partition.

The others get fed 61 gr H4831, WW brass, WW LR primer with 130 Partition or 130 Bitterroot. I reduce by .5 gr for the 130 Swift Aframe.

All these rifles get 130 Sierra's for practice, and require no changes in sight setting.

I'm one that could never quit reach 2,900 with a 22" barrel. Others find it easy.

My current 150 load is 58.0 H4831sc with a 150 NBT. Just at 2,900 from my 23" bbl'd Kimber MT.

Of course, a 150 from a 270 is a different animal than a 150 from a 308 Win, even if they're moving at the same speed. I'd compare it more with a 30 cal 165 grainer in terms of penetration (construction being equal).
Posted By: Shag Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 12/31/11
I can get 2850 with a 150 in a .308 Montana with not a single sign of pressure..

With 54grs of Hunter and a 150 in the .270 I'm getting the same 2850 with signs of pressure.

So if your saying the SD of the .277 150 Partition trumps the SD of the 150 .308 Partition I'll buy into that, as I'm a big .260rem fan.. smile

I am going to work with some 150gr Interbonds. With a BC of .525 I'd love to get it to 2900.. Why? Why not? smile

I,m with the RL22 group, my best load is 59gr of RL22 with
140gr bullet, using a Gameking or Accubond bullet, in a
Vanguard S2 270 Winchester. That powder works with my 257 Roberts
and 7MM remington mag, as long as you use heavier bullets.

If you can get them to shoot. I've ran a box or two over my 270's and a bunch of 154's over my 280 and they can be tricky. As much as I like Hornady, I'd personally look at the 140 AB. Much easier to get to shoot well. YMMV.

I shoot 150 Interlocks with 55.5 grain H4831sc out of my CZ 550. It shoots a lot of things well but this load GREAT!
Posted By: aheider Re: Good .270 Winchester Loads - 01/04/12
I am running 58 grains of H4831sc under 140 Accubonds, BTs, and Interlocks. 57.5 grains under a 150 Nosler Partition. All of them shoot to an inch with my featherweight but those Interlocks are cutting a ragged hole.... I am trying to convince myself they would be fine for elk but I haven't tried it. So many good bullet choices available it's hard to put the Hornadys first in line.
I have killed a number of deer with Hornady 130/150 grain interlocks years ago. All were one shot kills. I killed a buck his year with 150 grain BT. They are extremely accurate from my Remington.
Welcome to the fire Wingnut.

I use 62 gr. IMR 7828SSC behind the 130 Sierras and 130 Hornadys for a muzzle velocity of around 3200 fps out of a 24" barrel. Accuracy is great and also 200 fps faster than the old standard of 60 gr. H4831. 61 gr. 7828SSC with the 140 Hornady works well too for a veloctiy of about 3100 fps. With the 150 Hornady, I load 59.5 gr. of 7828SSC for about 3000 fps. Approach these loads with caution of course, but I haven't had any problems in 3 different .270 bolt actions. I use WLR primers and R-P cases.

58gr of H4831SC under a 140 gr HNDY is my rifle's favorite too. I wouldn't tackle an elk with one, though. They've killed deer and antelope fine, but I think these are too soft for elk.

59.5 gr RL22,WW brass and WLR primer with 140 Nosler Accubond, 2990 fps and tiny groups in a SS 700.

Went to the range today. Shot 59.2gr of RL22 for 3077,out
of my weatherby Vanguard S2. With 140gr Game Kings. Most accurate load to day was 59gr of RL22 with 140gr Accubonds.
130gr interbond went 3154 with 60gr of Rl22. 130gr Sierra
went 3110 with 54gr of W760.

59 grains H4831sc(max)
140 AB or 135 SMK
2950 or so fps(22" ADL)

Shag, you think your bummed. My 7mm Remington Mag only did
2887FPS with 160 gr Accubonds. But the good news is the 270
Winchester Vanguard went 3077FPS for 5 shot average with 140gr.
Gamekings and 59.2gr. of RL22. 60gr. of RL22 went 3154FPS with
130gr. Interbonds. The 140gr. Gamekings were the most accurate.
W760 also worked well with the 130gr. Interbonds.

I like 56-57 gr of H-4831sc with 150s in the .270. I typically get 2800-2850 fps in 22" barrel and 2900-2950 fps with 24" barrel. There are several powders (RL22, Magpro - to name a couple) that will get 50-100 fps more velocity, but 4831 is still tough to beat. Hunter is very good with 130s. I've been running 56-57gr for around 3100 fps in 22" barrel. Been meaning to try 7828 and Magnum in the .270, but not got around to it yet.

Lou
10-4 Lou, I have an old pre-64 M-70 in 270 WCF in a very pretty stick of English walnut and I agree, 2900 fps is plenty, I dont want to lean on the steel or wood to much on this old girl. wink

Plus, a 150 Partition leaving at 2900 fps flat knocks the crap outta WT deer. grin

Powders that have "worked" for me in the 270 Winchester have included 4064,4320,H4350,IMR4350,IMR4831,H4831(past and present iterations)7828,MagPro,RL22,and RL25.Might have used some Norma 205 and MRP in years past but it was long ago....anyway you can likely load a 270 Win with lumps of coal and it'll work. Not a very fussy cartridge IME.

Sometimes you just don't want to fiddle with stuff and a slam dunk load that you know is the way to go.....so,I loaded up 50 rounds the other day with the old standard of 61-H4831-130 Partitions, and got zeroed for hunting which took a grand total of 7 rounds so that's that. smile

Have I put my 270 load on here? My load is 130gr. GMX with 55gr. of Reloader 17, win brass and CCI LRM primers, gets me about 3160fps; I have been using for about 2 years now, its taken 4 game these last two years, and I haven't lost a single one, so its definitely a good one, keep in mind this is a tiny bit over the recommended max, so proper workup is required.

why, 60 g H4831sc + 130 g cup/core, of course! my Ruger 77 MKII likes it as much as any other ammo, and my 1st Gen Sendero loves it.

It's actually been more than needed on any of the deer I've shot, including a 230 lber that was hit quartering-on at about 120 yds.
55 gr IMR4350 and the Hornaday 130 shoots tiny little groups and is deadly on deer size game.

I need to work up a dedicated elk load.... thinking RL22 and the Nosler 150 PT.
or H4831sc...

Rem brass, Federal 215 primers, 150g Nosler Partition, 58.5g H4831SC for 3020 fps out a 22" barrel (Rem 700 BDL in 270 with a 22" barrel). Shoots .5 MOA in my rifle. Work up to the load slowly starting at 55g of H4831sc, stop at any pressure signs. I neck size only so my cases are fireformed to a bit more capacity than full length resized cases.
160g Partition, 58.5g H4831sc, Win brass, CCI Std LR primer - 2820 fps

130g Partition, 56.5g H4350 - 3100 fps

150 SST, 59.0g H4831 - 2950 fps

130g Interlock, 56.0g H4350 - 3070

All these will put 5 rounds into around 1 moa, and all the loads combined except the 130 NPT print within a 1.5 inch vertical group at 100y. The 130 NPT prints around 2 inches lower.

The Interlock load is compatible with 130g Hot Cors as well.

For those willing to experiment a bit,try RL25.Check it out in the Barnes Manual with data for the old 130 XLC bullet....max was 65 gr IIRC.

Back off for standard bullets and work up using Fed 215's and find pressure, establish working loads.Doing this in a M70 Classic FW,the 130 XLC gave 3200fps from a 22" barrel with the Barnes max charge of RL25.

Load was heavily compressed in WW brass, but would be less so with standard bullets(lighter charges) and/or heavier bullets.

I wonder what it will do with heavier 270 bullets(?)but have not had the chance to try it out.

Bob, RL22 and 130 SST have been very good to me for many years. I am awaiting delivery of some 150 Berger VLD hunting bullets. I have a little Axis doe cropping operation I need to attend to. I have shot a couple of deer with the 140 Berger .284. I want to try the .277 to try and determine what all the fuss is about.

Randy let us know how it goes with the cull....that is always interesting stuff. wink
One powder that has not been mentioned is Superformance.
I got my Elk with Superformance and 140gr Accubonds. Start at
55gr if you are using Winchester or Remington cases. Use one
grain less if you use Federal cases. I had best results with
WRL primers, 215 magnum primers also worked. The Superformance
and RL22 were equal in the accuracy department. IMR7828SC
was the next most accurate powder and gave similar velocity.
If I was shooting 130gr bullets then I,d use H4832SC like
everone else. I haven,t found a accurate 150gr load in my
gun yet. I,ll work on it this year.
Here's a couple:

Bullet - Nosler 130 gr Accubond Part #(54987)
Brass - Remington
Primer - CCI 200

H-4831 - 55 gr

(58 gr is maximum)

Bullet - Speer .277 150 gr SP Part #(1605)
Brass - Winchester
Primer - Winchester 8 1/2 Large Rifle

IMR-4831 - (52.5 gr)

(55 gr is maximum)
