Lookin' to load some Hornady 150 grain IL SP's for my 270win.
I have a ton of H4895 and don't really use anything else these days.
I do have a little H4350 left but I don't want to stock two powders for rifle if I don't have to.
Anybody ever use H4895 with a 150grain bullet? No data for it at Hodgdon.

My Sierra 50th anniversary list IMR-4895 for their 150s , but no Hodgden ! Seems to me like a pretty fast powder for a 150-.270 , I'm thinking either 4350 would be a better choice !

Of those two powders I'd say H4350 all the way, you're gonna get better velocity. Here's the Hodgon data for H4350:

150 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon H4350 .277" 3.285" 46.0gr (2,575fps) 43,400 CUP 49.0gr (2,724fps) 51,000 CUP

Man, no one out there has tried H4895 with a 150...Steves pages lists 40 to 43 grains of H4895 but does not specify a bullet, plus its steves pages so I am not sure if it really counts

One thing about using H4895 in the 270 would be a noticable reduction in recoil. I'm of the opinion it would be a good hunting load at 2700 fps. E

I once worked up to 42.0 gs of H-4895 in the 270 Win with CCI 200 primers. In my rifle it was running just over 2600.

What else would you like to know?

What bullet were you using?

Sierra lists 44.9 grains of IMR4895 as max for their 150 Spitzer boat tail in the .270 for 2700 fps.

FWIW, I'm using 46.0 IMR4895 with a 130 grainer for just at 2800 fps in a 22" barrel. Sierra lists 47.1 as max for a 130, but during load work up my M700 BDL shot a 5 shot .642" group with that 46 grain load so I called it good and quit right there.

The bullet you use makes a lot of difference in pressure. But if it were me, I'd take it to 44 or 44.5 grains of the Hodgdon version or 2700 fps, whichever came first, and figure on still being safe.

It all depends on what you want.There are several powders out there that takes the 150 grain in the 270 Winchester over 2900 fps.I might op for one of these powders instead of 4895.

Yes I'm sure I could get there if max fps was the goal. In this case I am willing to settle for less for several reasons.

I was using the Hornady .277" Interlock Spire Flatbase in the H4895 load I referenced.

What weight was the bullet?

Sorry, I thought we were talking about 150's. I did some work with 130's and H4895 too, but the 42.0 gr. load I referenced above was with Hornady 150 flatbase Spire Interlocks.

I was indeed talking about 150's but since you never referenced it specifically I just wanted to be sure we were on the same page, thanks for the input, I appreciate it quite a bit. I am going to try and work up a load in the next few weeks or so.
