New Ruger LH SS Hawkeye arrived worked up some trial loads with IMR 4831 and 100 gr Hornady Int. Never loaded for the 25-06 and need some suggestions? Have lots of cup & core 100 - 120 gr bullets.

Mine likes a max charge of RL17 and just about any 100 grain bullet...Nosler, Sierra, TTSX..

In the early 1970's, used .25-06 on 14 head of deer with 100gr Hornady pre-Interlocks. From 60yds to 300yds, all were instant stops and never recovered a single bullet, all pass throughs. Never tried an end-on or neck shot. Used IMR4831 at the time and my loads chronographed 3375fps. Most cup & cores are even tougher now. A TTSX or GMX might be handy in case you run into something tougher than deer.

Dink, what range of RL 17 start & stop or a link, cant find any data for it.

kk, Alliant says 53grn of R17 on their site, but I would start at 50. I got up to 53 pushing 100g Speers in a 25" Lilja at a whopping 3500fps avg, but it was a max load in said rig. If you are looking for speed with 100s, R17 is definitely an option.

I use 56.5 gr RL-22 and 100 gr Interlocks with CCI 200 primers. It worked well in a Ruger I had and still works well in the MRC 1999/26" Lilja I had built.

I shoot 56g of R#17, Win brass, Win primer, 100g Speer BTSP or 100g Hornady Interlock at 3400+ fps, tiny groups. The 100g Nosler partitions are also very accurate with this load.

I've had good success with 117 gr Sierra Boattails (1630s), either RE17 or IMR 4381, and Winchester Large rifle primers. I started both powders around 50 gr. or so and worked up.

I just lucked into a weatherby vanguard just wondering how the 100gr balistic tip would hold up on deer.

7828 and 100 Horns is one of my all time fav combo for both the 25/06 and the 257 Wby

Both my 25-06's shoot the 110 Accubonds well. Remington Varmint Special likes 54.2 grains of IMR 4831, Fed 215 primer, 3260 FPS. Old Sako likes 51 grains of 4350. Have had good luck with the Accubonds on Whitetail and a couple Pronghorn.

My Cooper likes 52.5 grains of RE-22 pushing a 120 HPBT to 3000 fps.

kkalska:

All good suggestions above.

Norma MRP powder worked well in my 25/06 for the 75-90 grain bullets. I had great accuracy with the 75 and 90 grain Sierra (varmints).

I used IMR 4831 with the 120 Nosler Partitions and Hornady Interlocks, but lots of newer, perhaps even better powders have come along for the 25/06.

This cartridge does a lot more than it should, and with the copper bullets it is outstanding. You will enjoy it.

My wife's 25-06 likes 49.0 grs. of IMR4350 and 120 gr. Nosler Partitions. I use Winchester cases and Federal 210 primers.

I've got two of them. One shoots 100gr Sierra and H4831sc and the other is 115gr Nosler BT with RL-19. Never could get RL-22 to work well for me.

Somewhere around 49gr of IMR4350 seems to be a sweet spot for 117/120gr bullets.
Posted By: RickF Re: 25-06 good loads - 10/23/11
Every 25-06 I have owned has loved about 57 grains of RL22 with a 100 grain bullet and magnum primer. Wonderful accuracy and velocities pushing 3400 fps.

117 hornady sst and 53 grains of r19 seems to work well in mine.

Here is what worked for me in my 25-06 LH Ruger Hawkeye 24" WW case, CCI Std primer, 120 Gr Nosler Part., 50 Gr IMR 4350, 4 @ .875" at 100 yards

53.5 IMR 4831 100 gr Hornady Interlock 4 @ .58" at 100 yards

Tried RL 22, IMR 7828 & the obsolete Magnum Rifle 3100

What kind of speeds were you getting?
Posted By: 79inpa Re: 25-06 good loads - 10/25/11
kk what is the biggest thing that you've ever smacked with that 100 grain hornady?

thanks
drew

58 reloader 22 cci br2 winchester case 100 grain hornady. Thumb tack accurate but only gives me 3200 fps. It is an old lot of powder so maybe it is old?

53.5 imr 4831 100 sierra flat base winchester primer .5

48-49 4350 120 grain grain hornady winchester case less than .7

53.3 imr 4831 remington case 100 swift ss2 3317 fps remington primer. .5-.6

the above loads have worked for me but several of them are at or above max loads.

Target at 100 yards!!

Did not chrony 2nd loads to busy at range. If wind dies down
plan to chrono.

Now if I can get my fussy 300 WSM to shoot! goes from 1.25" to
3" same loads? Found a tight mag box shimmed floorplate, 2nd plan is to swap scopes. But checked it with my collimator and it tracks well. And holds zero?

I suggest you ladder from 52g to 54g of IMR 4831, watching for pressure signs as you go. 54g is a max load in most manuals. IMR 4831 tends to be more accurate in the top of its load spectrum so I wouldn't go slower. I've shot over 40,000 rounds of 25-06 and 25-06 Imp and have tried almost all bullet/powder combinations in the last few years. I keep coming back to IMR 4831 with the Interlock for the best combination of speed/accuracy. It has always been my most accurate powder and since I shoot out to 600 yards with these bullets, accuracy is very important to me. These will get you going plenty fast for deer and I doubt any deer will take a step after impact with these bullets. My most accurate 100g bullets are the Hornady Interbond and the Sierra Game Kings with the former being a top performer in pentration/killing effect. It still amazes me that one of the most economical bullets is performing the best.
Posted By: 79inpa Re: 25-06 good loads - 10/30/11
just out of curiosity what speeds do you get with 4831 and 100s? Mine does 3300-3400 depending on bullet.
Posted By: Mikey300 Re: 25-06 good loads - 10/30/11
That sounds about right 70inpa. My 54g hunting load goes 3400 fps using 100g SGK or Interlock bullets. I can crank that up to 3550 fps using IMR 4831 over max but they are not as accurate in either of my two rifles. My hunting load shoots about .6 MOA. My most accurate in both rifles is 58g of IMR 4831 under a 75g VMax at 3700 fps. These shoot .250 MOA in my 26" 10 twist Sendero and about triple that in my Weatherby Ultralight and are my 600 yard varmint load. They don't miss many p-dogs at 500 yards using the Sendero. I've tested these 75g pills over 4000 fps in my Wby with the long freebore without pressure signs. I just shot an antelope at 500 yards head on with a 100g SGK. It penetrated from front chest to the rear hip socket (over three feet) through a FULL belly of alfalpha and flattend the critter. I've never had but one Interlock stay inside a deer of any size within 250 yards and that was stuck in the brisket hide after an end-to-end.
