Posted By: Azshooter Tried RL-33 with a 300 RUM - 10/19/12
Wasn't going to do it this close to the hunting season but got restless.

Had a okay load with H1000 and Berger 230 gr target hybrid. Used 88.5 gr for vel of 2860 fps. Load is close to max.

The barrel was a 24" rem takeoff in 300 win mag. I machined it to fit a push feed model 70 and used a PTG reamer.

Used the same components with same seating depth just substituted RL-33. Started with 90 gr and worked up. Temperatures were 85-90 degrees. Here are the results so far:

90gr 2665
92gr 2745
94gr no reading cardboard shades moved had to wait for next ceasefire to adjust
96gr 2875
98 gr 2925
100gr 3001

No signs of pressure, no bolt lift issues, primers look good etc. Will start when range opens and temps are in the low 50s. Will chrono the 100 gr load again for comparison.

-------
I went out again today to continue the 300 RUM testing with RL-33 and the 230 Berger target hybrid:

Shot the 100 gr load this morning in 60-70 degree weather. The average velocity for four shots was 2975 fps. This compares pretty close to yesterday's two shots averaging 3001 at 85-90 degrees. Will need more rounds to conclude if the powder is temp sensitive as well as cooler mornings. Az just won't cooperate with cooler weather yet.

Continued with more powder:

101 grs 2983 fps This is the first increase that didn't show a 50-70 fps increase in velocity. It would appear that there is nothing more to gain by increasing charges

102 grs 3016 had a tiny amount of bolt lift resistance.
Didn't try any hotter loads.

For my rifle 100 gr is the max I'll shoot. It was the most accurate too.

What kind of accuracy?

Interesting, wonder what it would do for 180's compared to Retumbo....prob shows more benefit with the heavies

Az,
What time were you at the range? I was at pima around 1100.
Accuracy? If I did my part the bulletholes would kiss each other. Going out sometime during the week for final sightin.

I have no idea if RL-33 will help with a 180. Most likely run out of powder space first. Only way to know it to try it. Doubt you'll get to signs of pressure.

Enrique..I opened up the place and usually leave by 9 or sometimes 10am. We just missed each other.
FWIW...The new quickload has re33 in the library. Looks like it's got the speed pretty close but pressure looks a bit scary. I know the rum seems to get run pretty hard before pressure shows. This is just something to look at:

forgot to mention ql doesn't have the 230 bullet in the library...I used a 240mk but changed the wt to 230 for the calc.

Also.... a long throat in the barrel could easily relieve pressure by 8k or more. Not sure how you have it set up.
Thanks for looking up RL-33 in quickload Kraky,

There are some differences between the 230 hybrid and the 240 sierra. I have both and the hybrid has alot less bearing surface. I am happy with the results I am getting and will run with it. There is a jump to the rifling as I am loading so it fits the wyatt's mag box. Never bothered to measure the jump though. Why bother when the hybrid will shoot pretty much anywhere you seat it.

Quick load does not work very well with the 300 Remington ultra mag. I know this cuz my numbers are always off. It does not take into account the freebore.

You have to change the Ba rate.. Once you get a couple shots over it you can zero it in.
Posted By: Fotis Re: Tried RL-33 with a 300 RUM - 09/09/21
Scotty. I can tell you that 97 grains gave me 3230 fps with the 199 hammers.

Now that is what I am talking about! There aint no elk on the mountain taking that sorta HP!

Did you have an 8 twist for that load?
Posted By: Fotis Re: Tried RL-33 with a 300 RUM - 09/10/21
Yup.

That looks good Fotis. Can’t wait to try it in the new rifle.

What twist is the barrel?

1:8.
