I see in the Hodgdon online that I can use a Trail Boss load. Just wondering how close this is to the reduced recoil loads made by Remington?

Also, anyone have any other pet reduced recoil loads for the 270?

Remington is using IMR 4198 for their reduced loads/ managed recoil...

trail boss will get you in the 1200 to 1300 fps range...

try a max of 35.5 grains with a 130 grain bullet and that should be right in the neighborhood at 2600 to 2650 fps...this will duplicate the Remington Managed Recoil Load..

if you want to use a 110 grain bullet you can bump that up to right at 38 grains and be in the 3000 fps range..

Just for clarification, are the 35-38gr charge weights you list for 4198 or Trail Boss? Looks somewhat ambiguous to a passerby.

I recently scored 2 ea. 9 oz cans of Trail Boss. It can be used in just about any rifle cartridge.

Here's the .270 data:

130 gr bullet + Win WLR primer
Start 14.0 gr for 1,318 fps @ 22.8 kPSI
Max 19.7 gr for 1,537 fps @ 27.1 kPSI

I use 24.0/IMR 4759 behind Sierra's 130 gr. softpoint, either flat base or boattail. Velocity is just over 1800 fps from the 22" barrel of my Tikka T3. 100 yd. accuracy is excellent - holes touching at 100 yds. Point of impact is in the x-ring at 100 yds. with the CDS dial set for 300 yds. for my hunting load (Barnes' 110 TTSX at 3400 fps). 200 yd. groups open up of course, to around 3 - 3 1/2", but still ok for coyotes or javelina. This load is right out of the Speer No. 10 manual.

Recoil and noise are similar to a .222, in other words, mild enough for an inexperienced woman or child.

but I'll admit, if they can't figure it out, they will find out it is a hell of a feat to put 35 to 38 grains of Trail Boss in a 270 case....

but I'll try to be a little clearer next time...

Thanks for the information. This is used at a ranch I hunt/guide on for kids a women (and some men as well) that are newbies to the hunting/shooting world and are recoil sensitive. The 130 grain loads sound like what will work on these smaller Hill Country/Edward's Plateau whitetails.

They will be shot out of a Tikka T3.

LOL, you are right on that one. Problem would have solved itself....

That load should be very effective on those small whitetails within 200 yds. I would be interested in hearing how it performs.

One thing to keep in mind, and I expect you already know this, but when charging your cases it is easy to inadvertently dump a double charge of that small amount of powder. I always check powder levels before seating bullets.

Sorry, gave wrong info on vel. for the .270 Win. reduced load. It is not 1800, it is + - 2130, or was, last time I shot some over my chrono. It has been very accurate for a reduced load.

Try some H4895 with the 110 gr NAB's.

It should do the trick.

I loaded up fifty rounds of 270 for my daughter and her young girls to shoot with the 130 Nosler ballistic tip and H4895 using 60% of max load as suggested by Hodgdons.

With our severe winter weather this year, no one has tried them out yet. I am anxious to see how they perform.

Another suggestion, taken from Speer #10 is 20 gr SR4759 with a 130 gr bullet at 1650 fps to 24 gr SR4759 with a 130 at 2000 fps.

I have not used the 4759 loads in the 270, but I have shot the equivalent 4759 loads with 150's and 125's in the 30-06. My 30-06 loads at 1800 fps made very good ground squirrel ammo and were used to familiarize my kids with my big game rifles.
