I have a 35 Whelen with a 1-14 twist barrel. It shoots 250 grain and 200 grain bullets fantastic, but 225 grain bullets not so well. Anyone else have this problem?
The reason I ask is my dad gave me a box of 225 grain Partitions, and I would like to try and get them to shoot well for an upcoming elk hunt. I know I can shoot the 250 grains ,but he wants to go with me and went out of his way to buy the Noslers for me. Just so you know the 250's ,shoot to just under an inch at 100 yards and the 225's about 3 inches at the same yardage. I know I could probably slide a different bullet past him,but hey its my dad. Thanks
You don't say what powder you're using but my Custom Mauser in the Whelen has a 1 in 14 twist as well. Maxload for the Partition IIRC in the Nosler #7 manual is 59.0 gr. of Re15. I worked up to that charge and accuracy was in the 1.25" range. Now the following load that has worked best in my rifle is 60.4 gr. of Re15 and the Barnes 225 gr. TSX which does between .50" to .75" depending on how well I do my part.I've taken three elk with that load at distances from 150 yards to 350 yards. All one shot kills. I like it. Try playing with the seating depth and see if that improves your groups.

I have a Mauser in 35 Whelen with a 1-14 twist. It shoots 225 grain Partitions well with 58 grains of Reloader 15 or 60 grains of Varget. Some days it will group three in an inch, other days they are about an inch and a quarter. I think the difference is my concentration, not the rifle or load.
Which 225's are giving you problems? The NPTs or another brand? I'm assuming the NPTs.

My experience is with a 22" Adams & Bennett (Midway) 1:14" barrel. It shoots sub-MOA with Sierra GameKings and Re-15 powder. (Even tighter with Re-12, but Alliant doesn't sell it anymore.) In short, I've had EXCELLENT experience with those 225 SGKs.
My M77RS's go to load with 225 NPT's in Rem brass, CCI 200's is with a max dose of IMR 4320 via the Nosler data. They have killed my last 2 elk fine. Some of the other powders mentioned already do produce more velocity though. Magnum Man
Thanks for all the answers, the problem child is the NPT,but I hav'nt had much luck with any brand of 225 grain bullets, from Nosler BT,to Game kings. I have a bunch of different powders. The gun loves 250 grain with 4064. May have to try IMR 4320 That one I don't have.
My Rem 700 is terrible with the 225gr Ballistic Tip, but shoots the 225gr Partitions really well, over a max charge of Re-15.
In my rem. 7600 .35 whelen,53.5 gr. of h4895,225 gr. Nosler part. average 2560 fps.It is an accurate load and I had no problem dropping a bull moose with it.
