I have an x-bolt with a 22 inch barrel that I have started reliading for. So far I can only get 2850 fps working up to max published loads of h4831 and h4350. Accuracy is excellent and I'm not arguing that 2850 fps isn't fast enough to do the job but I have a 7mm-08 that will shoot that fast so I'm not gaining anything with the 280 other than burning more powder. I am using 140 gr accubonds for bullets. I have heard that published load data tends to be conservative for the 280. I was wondering if anyone else has had issues getting 2900 fps with published data? I going to start working over max loads and keep an eye out for pressure signs. Is anyone else able to get 2900 fps with h4831 or h4350 with 140 gr bullets, particularly accubonds?

Only 3000 fps result I got was with Nosler Ballistic Tips and IMR 4350. No other 139/140-grainer beats 2800 fps in my BDL DM.

The reason(s) for published data and the .280 Rem are that it was introduced in non-bolt guns, and, the lawyers have generally pushed more conservative data in newer books.

If you know what you are doing (like many here) this particular envelope can be pushed in a bolt gun. The usual caveat always applies, and I won't insult you with a repetition.

The only hard-and-fast rule for hand loading is that most of the shortcuts can be very dangerous. Have fun and be safe.

Ran into this with IMR4831,which broke 3000 fps with 140's;but accuracy was lousy.IMR 4350 was accurate but slower and in the high 2800's.

The solution seemed to be a move to RL22 which gave the best combination of accuracy with velocities in the 3050 fps range.

This was with my barrel which was a 22" Shilen.

Much of this seems to vary with individual barrels, throating etc....much like what we see now and then from the 7mm RemMag.I have found the two cartridges behave much the same when it comes to delivered velocity, but the theme with the double based slow burners delivering somewhat more velocity seemed to hold true working with a 22" barrel of a M70 FW 280 as well.Velocities of 3050 or so were pretty routine with 140 gr Nosler Partitions, Sierra's and Bitterroots..

I think the cartridge can benefit from the use of powders a tad slower than even H4831 or 4350. With the caveat that I never used H4831 in the cartridge but others report good result with it.

If the OP is getting the same velocity in a 7/08 as with a 280 from the same length barrel the best guess would be that the 7/08 is being loaded hotter than the 280 since the 280 has greater powder capacity.

You can try Reloader 19,it seems to be very good for top velocity in the 280. I would use Noslers data with Reloader 19 and work up a load that gives you good accuracy and 3000 fps.

In the past I did the same thing with IMR 4350 using various 140 grain bullets.I had no problem getting 3000 fps from a number of 280s.
Posted By: Lucas1 Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/09/15
I use RL19 in my 26 inch barrel and get from 3000 to 3050 with 140 gr. I had a Ruger 22 inch and 2850 is about all it does. A deer doesn't know they difference between 2850 and 2900.
Posted By: Lucas1 Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/09/15
Another thing to remember is reloading books use 24 and 26 inch barrels for their speeds.
Posted By: ruraldoc Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/09/15

I had no trouble getting 3000 fps with 140 grain bullets in two 280s that had 22 inch barrels.
Posted By: deerhuntertommer Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/09/15
I know a lot of people have achieved 3000 fps with 140 grain bullets. I was just wondering if they were able to do so without going over max published loads.
Posted By: ruraldoc Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/09/15

The loads that I used were taken directly from a reloading manual. The maximum published load for that powder is now about three grains less.

I am not telling you to do this but I used 57 grains of IMR 4350 in Remington cases with CCI primers.

The maximum published load in the same manual in the most modern edition is 54 grains.

At the time,I considered the load fairly conservative,Fred Huntington of RCBS fame had taken a 280 to Africa with Jack and Eleanor O'Connor. Jack wrote in a reloading guide at the time that Fred used 59 grains of IMR 4350 for a velocity of over 3100 fps, from a 22 inch barreled custom Husqvarna rifle.

Jim Carmichael later owned the same rifle,as far as I know he still has it.

My .280 has no problem getting 3050+ fps with Barnes 140 gr. TSX bullets and IMR 4350.

Interesting that this thread popped up. I've got a 270 and 7-08. I've thought of getting a 280 or 280ai for my next savage build. The published data is interesting when comparing the 270 vs. the standard 280 in the same bullet weight (both are the same cartridge for all intents and purposes). Nosler shows both getting a 140gr to ~3,000fps with a number of powders. Most of those are the same powders. There's about one grain more of the same powder being loaded in the 270. Also note that Nosler has a 24" test barrel for the 270, and a 26" for the 280. By just looking at the data alone I've concluded that it's all but pointless to get the standard 280 with the other rounds that I already have. I might as well get the 280ai or another 7-08 as it will burn less powder which translates into shooting more bullets per dollar! Heck with Nosler's data a 7-08 can shoot to within 60fps of the standard 280, and both with 26" barrels. 60fps isn't much really.

Just looked at Alliants website. RL23 and RL26 show some really good speeds for the 270, 150btsp. It'd be nice if they start publishing some data for other calibers running these two powders.

Exactly why I got a 7mm08 instead of another 280.

Yup and that's because it has the capacity to easily pull it off..

Reading QL and looking at loading manuals is fine to say a case with the capacity in the 40's(with bullets seated) is only 60-70 fps slower than a case that holds 60 gr....until you run into that darned chronograph and the barrel you use shrinks to 22"-24" vs the 26" in the manual;and is looser in the throat and internal dimensions than the pressure barrels used to work up manual data.

So you load the smaller case with manual max loads and wonder where all the velocity went? Suddenly the larger case looks better because there's room to improve.

Add on top that most home grown loaders are "pressure guessing" almost all of the time....despite what things like QL says. It's of some value of course....in looking at the QL data with R22, I understand why I stopped at 60-61 RL22 with the 140 many years ago for about 3000-3050.That was in the days before there was a QL .

OTOH I never had a 22" barreled 7/08 that would break 2850 with a 140 without sweating real hard.

This silly magic of smaller cases giving the same velocities as bigger cases exists in fairy tales. Like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy giving you something for nothing. wink smile

I agree, you can't get the same velocity. However, 60fps in real world applications is nothing. Heck, being more generous with the velocity spread at 80fps (2820-2900), the drop of my 139btsp is only 2.75" more at 80fps less AT 500 yards.

My problem is I like speed, but efficiency too...

My 280's snort on H4831SC, IMR7828SSC, IMR4350.

I once tested 5 rifles chambered in 280 Remington on the same range trip with the same load. 3 of them wouldn't break 2700 fps. The other two ran around 2820 fps.

The .280 case capacity is nearly identical [perhaps 1-2 gr. greater--depending on brand] to the .284 WIN. (Which is, in itself, of the same capacity as the .30-06 case)
Try some loads for the .284 and you might find what you are seeking.
The .280 was/is downloaded by the factories in [deference to] the autoloaders for which it was initially introduced. Which, by the way, makes no sense at all, because the .270 Win. was also chambered in those same autoloaders at somewhat higher pressure. Still makes no sense at all. Try the .284 load data.

WILL

The 740 (Mfr 1955-1959), and 742 (Mfr 1960-1980) were not chambered in .270 Win. They were chambered in .244 and 6mm Rem however, which is/was loaded to higher pressure standards than the .280 and .30-06

Loading the .280 Rem ( 60,000 PSI) to .270 Win pressure levels (65,000 PSI ) in a modern bolt action shouldn't be so mysterious for the hobbyist Handloader.

I just use .270 data.

NTG I was not dumping on what you were saying and agree that 60 fps is not enough to consider.I guess my only point is that I tend to go with what I see from rifles I've actually used and loaded for, which in both the 7/08 and 280 have pretty much all had 22" barrels(I have had a couple of 7/08's with 20" barrels as well.

I note that Nosler used 26" barrels for both in working up their data, but in the 22" 7/08s I've worked with velocities ran in the 2800-2850 fps range, or about what I have also seen from the 7x57 with barrels of the same length.

I know the 7/08 is the pet cartridge of many on here and I have seen some pretty giddy velocities posted for it but I have never seen the cartridge hit some of those speed levels.

OTOH,and as Brit points out above I have also seen any run of the mill 280 with a 22" barrel hit 3000,3050 fps.with 140 gr bullets and a variety of powders. I also found that, using RL 22 I have seen velocities hit over 3100 fps but was not comfortable using those loads on a continuing basis...sort of pushing the envelope much the same way we might if we see a 7/08 hit over 2900 fps with the same bullets.

So for me and rifles I've used the real world difference seems to be more on the order of 150-200 fps difference between the two in the same barrels. I tend to look at weighted averages from rifles I've actually shot as opposed to what the manuals say.

Bob,

We're on the same page I believe, and I appreciate your input on it as I haven't played with them like you. I'd like to have a 280 some day just to see what it can do. I enjoy reading and comparing things, and like threads like this for that reason.

I've thought we'd all be packing 30-06s (and maybe 7x57s) if we weren't all rifle loonies (i.e. over think it, got to tinker, etc.)! No other cartridges would have made it. But where's the fun in that?!?

NTG a 280 is one of lifes better things... wink There aren't many 7mm's I don't like. smile

I've always sort of felt that the next jump in the same caliber is something on the order of the 7 Rem Mag,the objective being for me not more speed from 140 gr 7mm bullets, but the ability to push 160-175 gr bullets in the 3000 fps+ range,or about what the 280 gets with 140-150.

True we are burning a bit more powder but recoil is still manageable and we get whatever advantage accrues to the heavier bullets while still getting high velocity. That's where the bigger 7mm's come in IME.

I used to own a 7mm Rem. Mag., that I handloaded for. Used 160 gr. Game Kings almost exclusively, loaded to 2950 fps, and had good success on game up to moose with it.

Then, along came Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets, giving performance in the .280 with 140 gr. bullets at 3050 fps. so close to that of the 7mm that I couldn't tell the difference. The 7mm Rem. went down the road, and the .280 sits at the front of the gun safe nowadays.

Thanks Bob and Bighorn for the input. I know I'll get a 280 (or maybe 280ai) barrel some day and put it on a savage. This out of a guy that has a 270, knowing they're not that different, LOL!

Bighorn, what load do you have to push the 140 Barnes to 3050? It's interesting that Barnes shows the 270 with a 140 going to near 3050, but they don't show the 280 with a 140 doing that. I wish they'd show loads to load in "modern bolt actions" or do a load work up on the 280ai.
Posted By: Bighorn Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/15/15
NTG,

55.0 gr. of IMR 4350 gets 3050 fps with Barnes 140 TSX and Federal brass, a tad higher with Remington brass. Accuracy is consistently sub-MOA.

I have also worked up a load using Barnes 140 gr. TTSX, ahead of 56.5 gr. of RL19, MV 3000 fps, and exceptional accuracy. I stopped at 56.5 gr.- sub .5" accuracy is plenty good for me.

Modern bolt action rifles in .280 are capable of handling the higher pressures commonly found in .270, etc. loadings. Careful workups will often get you to loads higher than those in the books.

I don't doubt that I could wring higher velocity out of my current handloads, but I see no reason to do so.
Posted By: NTG Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/15/15
Yes...no reason to push it more. A 140ttsx going 3000 plus would tackle anything I'll ever want to hunt.

Thanks for the info.

I'm getting just shy of 3000 ft/sec with RL 19 and 140gr TTSX and a 24"bbl.

You can push 129 LRX at 3,100 in a 270 and it'll beat a 280 pushing 140 TTSX at 3,000. Drop, drift, velocity, FPE. I wouldn't be spinning off a 270 barrel if 140 TTSX was going to be your bread and butter.

My go-to load with 140 Partitions in my -08 is 47.5 grains Big Game with a magnum primer. 2873 MV. Good enough for me.

16bore- I'll leave the 270 barrel alone, in fact it's a new barrel I just put on a '51 vintage 721.

I'll be playing with a savage action if/when I go with a 280.

Pharm, What's your barrel length with that load? I've only ran a 22" before, but the McGowen I just got for a 110 build is a 24" 1-9twist. The 22" would max out around 2820 with varget...never could find Big Game pixie dust to play with.

pharmseller for 23 fps I ain't gonna argue the point. It's within the range of "normal".

Sure they are close.

Back when MRP sort of phased in and out (hard to get),and RL22 came along, I ran it in the 280 with 140 Bitterroot for about 3050-3080 in a custom Mauser. It was a killing load. The BBC was/is tough enough to take more velocity (like a Barnes) so I also used it in the 7 RM at 3250.

It also killed well and the biggest difference I saw was that the 7RM expanded them more fully at distances past about 300 yards. Of course there's always enough left of a BBC that you could observe this after the fact,(assuming they don't exit). The same relationship has shown over the years compared to the 270 with a 130 BBC.

Last bull elk I killed with the 7 Rem Mag about 5 years ago was hit with a 160 BBC at 3100. It really did a good job.

Tough bullet construction lets you drop in weight for much the same effect as a heavier C&C.

I agree. If a shooter wants 2900 + with a 7mm 140, choose a different cartridge than a 7mm-08.

With all due respect to Bob and Pharm, with RL-17 or 2000MR, 2900+fps is safely achievable with 139-140 gr pills with a 22" barrel in 7-08. The X-bolt gets 2940 fps using Hornady's max load of 47.0 gr 2000MR. Still a good 100 fps less than a 280 Rem. I agree you won't get near that with safe loads of Varget or RL-15.
Posted By: BobinNH Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/19/15
I have RL17 and 140 gr AB's on the bench, as we speak,to feed a Kimber Montana.I am still looking at data.

Data sent to me by Scotty Beretz on here says over 2900 fps with @ over 60,000 psi. So I guess we will see. smile
Posted By: LowBC Re: .280 rem velocity - 04/20/15
Mule Deer put me onto 59-60 grains of H4813sc with the 139 hornady. This will easily achieve what you are looking for...in the 280Rem that is.
