I couldn't resist SPS's sale on some E-tips--picked up some 167/168's for trials in 30-06. I've been playing a bit with moly coating bullets for several cals, and and I'm wondering what the result would be if I moly'd up some of these before beginning load work.

Anyone moly coating monos? Any consensus as to whether it is worth it as far as ease of load work-up and/or velocity gains? These are the first mono-metal bullets I've ever acquired. Any input is appreciated!

Yeah, it works on mono's too. Up to you if it's worth it. I've stopped on most things.

I've molyed some of the original Barnes X bullets.

Works great.

Personally, I've gone away from moly and the only coated bullets I shoot are the Nosler combined tech.

I don't do much of the kind of shooting that calls for the alleged benefits of moly. I was hoping to push bullets in the 30-06 a bit faster for S&G. Mine tends to have a "slower" bbl, for whatever reason. With some other C&C bullets, I've noticed that I definitely get more powder into cases before I hit pressure signs than I can with naked bullets. I'm not finding the accuracy that I want so far with C&C though. If the E-tips do the same ho-hum accuracy with moly, I'll likely just stick with naked bullets in that gun.

Not necessary.

Barnes uses a moly coating, which is blue, on their XLC line of bullets.

Ive gone back and forth on it. Same loads in my 260 showed +/- 30 FPS difference with Scenars. I still use it in my Tikka 223 and don't recall the last time I cleaned it, FWIW.

It ain't the be all, end all of shooting.

I coated the bore in the 30-06, and I never HAVE to clean it anymore. Accuracy doesn't suffer. The moly'd stuff I've used to good effect has been in 17 and 22 cals. The ability to step up speed a bit, or perhaps enhance accuracy, would be the reason to try it with the E-tips. Looking at Ramshot's data, they seem to be about as sticky as anything else. I've not been able to come close to Ramshot's numbers in my 30-06 though. Was hoping that the moly may allow me to do that.

I have only used it on 224 stuff and have quit using it. I did quite well in my K-hornet but not well enough to put up with the mess.

The real benefits of coating seems to be the decrease the need to clean often. BR shooting can run more than 60 shots sometimes w/o the time to clean between targets. The coatings seem to lessen fouling and the need to clean, accuracy is maintained. Moly can result in some other problems , like bore corrosion, and build ups. Ive used WS2 on most of the monos in a 7mm WSM and a 300WSM with good results.Used it on 80gr 223 rounds with no bad effects. I dont think for the most part in day to day shooting that its worth the trouble. And dont expect to turn an'06 into a 300 with moly, velocity increases will be minimal.

That is what I had thought. I couldn't recall what it was though. I don't have any. Heard a lot of good things about some of those.
