Hey guys

I have a north west BC coast hunt coming up this fall that I am pumped about! I am taking my Win 70 EW in 270 WSM and am in the process of working on a suitable load. I had a nice load with 130gr Partitions over RL 22 but for this hunt being in Grizzly I wanted something with more punch just in case. So now I am working 160gr Partitions over RL22 from 60gr to 61.5gr. Tags will include Moose, Black Bear and Sitka deer.

Tell me about you big game 270 WSM loads and your rifles.

140gr Barnes TSX in front of MagPro. I use 65grs; Branes list a starting load of 64grns and a maximum load of 70.5. You'll need to work up a load. More importantly is finding that OAL that will work in your rifle.

The load I've found is 1 full grain north of the starting load. I get a mean MV of 2800 fps.

I've never hunted Grizzly, Moose, or Sitka deer, but if I were to use the 270WSM, I have confidence in the accuracy in that load and construction of that bullet.

P.S.
Welcome to the Fire

I thought about loading the TSX but my LGS had a good selection of Nosler in stick. I shoot TTSX in 260 and have found them reasonably accurate. 2800fps seems a bit slow for the WSM, did you try pushing it faster or was that the sweet spot for accuracy?

130TTSX, Win Brass, Fed 215M, 62g I4350. 3260fps avg from a 23" pipe. I wouldn't hesitate to use it where the 160 NPT would be applicable.

Been shooting mostly 140s with R22 & R25
140 TSX, WW Cases, CCI 215 primer, 69 gr. Reloder 25, 3180 fps

You should find success with R22 & the 160 NP. The Nosler accuracy load was 59.5 gr. of 22.

A good choice for Moose but will be great on the others too.

RL 17 works great with 130 and 150 gr bullets.

There are two sweet spots for accuracy with this powder. The hotter one is almost max. I error on the side of caution in the event im shooting in 50 degrees or 100 degrees. I see a diiference in POI between Phoenix and Flagstaff but grouping remains.

Who is your outfitter? I live in the area and am curious. Your 130's will work fine but I like the 160 gr Partition a lot more although I use it in a regular 270 Win. The black bear I took almost 2 weeks ago with that combo wasn't a fan wink my favourite 277 cal bullet. Your 270 WSM should be even more of a good thing and I bet 3000 fps would be possible.

I'm going to be going with Wild Coast Outfitters. I'm almost out of the 130's and have about 150 pieces of the 160's so hopefully I can get a accurate load. The Nosler reloading data has either 59.5 or 60 gr at 3000 fps and that is not max.

Good luck on your trip hope it is successful. I would recommend you have merino wool head to toe and the best rain gear you can find, you'll thank me later lol. I'm going to send you a pm.

RL22, H1000, 7828, RL25 will all easily get to 3000 with the 160 Partition. I run 150 PTs with RL26 to nearly 3200. I bet it'll be a cool hammer with those 160's. Love the 270 WSM. Besides my 7mm Mashburn it is the easiest cartridge I've ever loaded for. Just seemed to like about everything.

Not in my 270WSM.

You'll have fun hunting with Angus, he's a great guy. Well , at least as much fun as mountain goat hunting allows; which is usually little enough. wink

I hunted bear with him last year, parts of me are still wet.

My 270 WSM does a hair over 3000 with 160 Partitions and 68 grains of Retumbo. When my Kimber is sighted in with 130 ballistic-tips and Accubonds at 300, the 160s are likewise at 200. That hasn't come in handy yet, but might someday.

Hey Dogleg! You change your name but not your sig line.

You have any good details or recommendations for my up coming hunt? I have to admit the closer it gets the more anxious I get. My biggest concern is getting all the meat on the plane!

Mines doing really nice with RL26 and 150 Partitions.

Over 3200fps with 150's is cooking her, I like it.

I shoot 61 grains reloader 22 with a 150 Partition
Posted By: Pearce Re: Lets talk 270WSM loads - 09/01/16
I have a few 60.5 and a few 61 loaded up to try with the 160's. Nosler's site says a max of 61.5 so I am getting close to it.
Posted By: Pearce Re: Lets talk 270WSM loads - 12/16/16
A little update, my trip got canceled unfortunately. But I did find a great load for my 270wsm. Settled on 61gr RL22 with the Nosler 160 partitions.

That looks good, the 160 gr PT has been an accurate bullet in my experience. Have you run it over a chronograph yet?

Posted By: Pearce Re: Lets talk 270WSM loads - 12/16/16
No I haven't, I don't know why but I have never got around to buying a chrony yet. It has been enough years now since I started reloading I should probably get one.
Do you need a special twist rate to stabilize those 160 partitions?
Posted By: Bighorn Re: Lets talk 270WSM loads - 07/12/20
I shoot 130 gr. Nosler E-Tips out of my .270 WSM. 63.0 gr. of RL22 gives MV's of 3300 fps out of the 24" barrel, and sub-MOA accuracy.

Nope.

They were designed for standard twist .270 Winchesters.

Hey Bighorn, how off the lands are your 130 E-Tips? I have heard they are very sensitive to "jump" and have been frustrated trying to get good accuracy out of a couple calibers of E-Tips. Appreciate any advice you can provide.
Thanks,
Rex
Here’s how my 2008 Winchester model 70 featherweight does with 130 accubonds at 300 yards. 4 of 5 of them in 1.5-2” with one pulled by me or pushed by the wind.
