Greetings,

I am soon to begin reloading for the first time and would like any input regarding additional powder options for the 300 Win Mag cartridge. I have H1000 and IMR Enduron 7977 on hand at the moment. While I have read quite a bit and the Reloder powders sound interesting I live in the north and temperature stability is an important consideration to me (load work up in warmer weather and hunting in cold).

IMR 7828 and Retumbo are on my radar but I'd appreciate any thoughts from you all regarding which one or two additional powders I should consider for load development purposes.

Also, in case it may alter a recommendation I should add that these loads will be shot through a 26" barreled custom rifle throated for heavy for caliber bullets such as the 212 Hornady ELD-X and 215 Berger Hybrid.

Thank you.

R
I think you are on the right track. H1000 is my current favorite in my .300 Win Mag but 7828 and Retumbo would be my next two choices. Especially with the heavier bullets Retumbo might get a bit more velocity.

I know a lot of guys love RL22 in that caliber and I have shot a bit of it but haven't had the best luck with it personally. Also, like you mention, RL22 is very temperature sensitive if that bothers you but honestly it usually isn't an issue unless shooting really far in extreme temperatures.

If you were running a little lighter bullets I really like IMR 4350.

Good luck
While I've pretty much found R22 instability claims to matter not in the real world, H4831 will give what you desire.

W780 was designed for that cartridge. Meters beautifully and is also great in the 300 winmag. also less erosive than stick powders. magnum primers required.

I've had great luck with H4831
mnimrod,

The problem with Reloder 22 (and other rather temperature-sensitive powders) isn't always just in longer-range shooting. Some rifles will change point of impact significantly even at 100 yards from 70 Fahrenheit to zero. I've seen three inches twice during my testing, and 1-2 inches isn't uncommon. Usually the rifles that do this are those that also change POI significantly with a change of a grain or two in the powder charge while working up loads.

This may not seem like much but the shift will be three times as much at 300 yards.
You did not state what weight bullets you were going to shoot but i would look into RL-17.

It does some nice work in the 300 short mag from 130 to 190 grain bullets.
1+ on Reloder 17. It appears to be temperature stable, and I've found it to give great top end velocities with 150-180gr bullets.

I'm running RL25 in mine, but RL26, RL22, and RL23 all would work fine. Data is a little limited for RL23 and 26, but Alliant does have some online now.
Try the two you have on hand before trying another powder.
H4831SC works well, as does RE-22. I live and hunt in NWOntario, so at least some of my hunting is done at or below zero degrees. My 300 kills moose dead at any temperature.
Ramshot Magnum has worked well for me ..

"Stool Research" is Larry Root by yet another name... shocked

Larry, the .300 Win Mag was the OP's designated round...

"...also great in the .300 winmag"...??

There DF corrected. too bad YOU have no experience/advice with the cartridge. chasing around the site, pirating threads, thinking you know something you do not.
For 180's I would try H4831, IMR4350. For 200's, H1000 and H4831 are my picks.
I've had great luck with 180's & 190's with both H4831 and H1000.

I read in a couple places where Mule Deer had written about the consistency of 75g of H4831 pushing a 180. In 3 different 300's I load for this has been a very consistent and accurate load. I've also had very low ES & SD's with it.

H1000 hasn't been far behind in either department, and it has delivered a touch more speed.

3100 is no more.
Ha ha.. I know. I used to use a chit load of that stuff. It was pretty good from what I remember. Too bad they don't make it anymore..
Had my Tikka 695 in 300 WM out today in fact. It likes lighter bullets than you plan, specifically 180 Accubonds or Interlocks. Shoots well under MOA with either in my less-than-expert hands off less-than-perfectly lock-solid bags with 76.0 of R22 in Norma cases and CCI 250 primers. The Norma cases have made a noticeable improvement over Hornady, Rem, or Winchester ones though I don't do precise measurements.
I've had great luck with 4350 behind 180 E-tips in my buddies .300wm. Started with 4350 and RL-22 and got much better results with the IMR.
