Hey guys I m putting together a 284 win. I was wondering if my 2.86 oal magazine would be sufficient for loading 140 gr Nosler Partitions and the like. I m guessing it will be fine?

Also I was wondering does anyone have reloading data for the 284 win R 17 and a 140 gr Partition or any other good combinations like that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Also to clarify on this a bit more. I m going to run a 24-26 in barrel length and this will be a hunting rifle. My plan is to have it do well out to 600 yards. I have thought that H4350, IMR4350 or H4831sc would also be strong performers at the lower bullet weights? I have no intentions of using bullets over 160 grains either. Especially now that berger has come out with their redesigned Classic Hunter bullets in 7mm. They will certainly fit in my magazine. At any rate if anyone has any info Id appreciate it. Thanks

4831SC has replaced all other powders for me in the .284. 59 grains and 140 Nosler Partitions are the combo I chose and I am happy enough with this load to not change.

Thanks Ward, that is one load I m considering for sure. Looks like a good one.

I have an orig ULA from 1990 that has the short magazine like you are talking about. 55 grains of IMR 4350 and a 140 Nosler Partion is all I have ever shot in it. It works.

I use RL17 in my long action 284 with good success. There are good articles on this powder and caliber.

Loads I run in my 284Win R77 with 19" Shaw barrel with .0005" taper bore.

120gr BT 52.5gr R15 at 3200 fps
139gr SP 55.5gr IMR 4350 at 2900 fps
140gr SB 55gr R17 at 2900 fps
150gr NP 47.5gr R15 at 2900 fps
160gr NP 55gr R17 at 2875 fps

These are all hunting loads and quite effective on game.
These loads developed watching speed, pressure signs and accuracy.
Used Win brass and Win LR primers.

My "short 280" has a 23" tube and my magazine handles an OAL of 2.95". It squirts the 140-gr TTSX, a loonngg bullet out at 3100fps with 52.5 grains of R17. I have also shot just over .5 MOA groups with this load to 400 yards. I have taken big mulies, white tails, and black bear with this load.

I've run the combos showing the loads using RL-15 and settled on the 120 NBT for Deer.

Owned a 284 since the mid 80s. Actually have had up to three at once!

When it first came out Bob Hutton worked up loads with the 140 nosler partition and 57-58 gr of IMR 4350. Velocities ran a bit over 3000 fps. I used this combo to kill a few cow elk.

Then I realized that H4350 would be a better powder as it is temperature stable AND fits into the case with its smaller grains.

I used H4350 with 120s,140s, and 160s for years.

-----------------------------------

Then RL-17 showed up.

All bullets mentioned below are MOLY COATED and got these results using Win cases and Fed 210 primers: OAL was 2.950" Barrel is a rem takeoff 23" long

162 A-max:

56 gr 3038
57 gr 3070
58 gr 3120

160 accubond 3050 fps with 56.5 grs max load and accurate

150 Nos BT: 57 gr 3100 most accurate

140 Nos BT: 58 gr 3250

Moly coated 140 TSX seated .050" off rifling
57 gr ave 3117
58 gr ave 3172

120 nosler ballistic tip
58 grs was 3250
59gr 3310

------------------ -------
I rebarreled with another rem takeoff a 24" 7-08 with a custom reamer made to my specs specifically for the 168 VLD. DID NOT USE MOLY. Win cases neck turned to fit with .007" total clearance. Fed 210 primers. Mag box was lengthened so new OAL is 3.050". 168 VLD is contacting lands with .010"
load is 51 gr of RL-17 for 2835 fps with 168 Berger VLD.

If I didn't have so many pieces of win brass I would be using Bullets.com Norma brass. It is available something that cannot be said for win brass.

Saving this for later as well. Should get back to shooting the 284 in the spring.
