I just got a nice Ruger Number 1 in .405 Winchester, along with brass, dies, bullets (Hornady 300 grain PSP's, Woodleigh 300 gr. RN's and some 210 grain .41 caliber Hornady XTP's). I also got 58 rounds of Hornady factory ammo and 2 full boxes of original WRA factory loads in the pretty red and yellow boxes. I have fired a few rounds of the Hornady ammo to sight it in and she seems like a shooter so far.

I have had an online subscription to Rifle, Handloader and Succesful Hunter magazines for at least 8 or 9 years, and have been scanning through them, trying to find load data, but to no avail. Would anyone know which issue of which magazine might have this information, or point me to another source? I do have Ken Waters "Pet Loads" with .405 data but it is a bit dated. Thanks for any help that anyone could provide.
You may have no interest in cast bullets, but the Wolfe Pub. online source (loaddata.com or something very similar) has an article from a few years ago.

Put another notch in your Loony Card Wildhobbybobby!

Wolfe Pub. had a special issue of Rifle called 'The Legacy of Lever Guns" published inWinter of 2000.

Dave Scovil wrote an article on the Win Model 1895. There are some loads given for the .405 with the Hawk 300 gr RN. Here are the loads tested (no mention if these are max., just that they duped factory loads at around 2,200 fps)

59.0 gr IMR-4895 2,165 fps
56.5 gr IMR-3031 2,162
58.2 gr IMR-4064 2,105
61.0 gr IMR-4320 2,202
58.0 gr RL-15 2,198
52.0 gr RL-7 2,231
40.0 gr IMR-4198 2,115
36.0 gr IMR-4227 1,950
Thanks, Muskegman! Yes, I was trying to become relatively sane for a year or two, but the mad compulsion struck again. I'm getting too old to make it back to your neighborhood, so the only things I will ever hunt with the .405 would be whitetails and perhaps a black bear if I draw a license. But he who dies with the most toys wins, right?
I can't locate it at the moment, but Mule Deer (John Barsness) wrote a article several yrs ago on the No1 in 405 for Rifle or Handloader.
Hodgdon has plenty of data for the .405.

In my #1 I found that Benchmark and TAC both worked very well with 300 gn bullets. Went up to 64 gn of Benchmark or 67 gn of TAC for around 2500 fps with no measurable base expansion, though they are way over any published loads and should not be approached in a 1895.

A 265 gn True Shot Cast bullet for the .41 Mag over 12 gn of Unique held down by 1 gn of polyester fluff made cloverleaves at 25 yd and at 100 yd landed 2” below the 300 gn bullets. Velocity was about 1240 fps.

Accuracy of the rifle was greatly improved after I took Ross Seyfried's advice: measure the gap between the barrel and forend hanger, carve a wedge that is suitably curved on top and bottom (I have used both hardwood and toothbrush handle plastic successfully) that is 1/10 inch thicker than the gap and drive it in. I did this on the .405 and a .300 Win Mag and in both cases groups went from 1.75" to well under 1".
Hornady’s #10 manual has loads it.
Just an FYI if you don't know Hornady has discontinued their 405 brass..Visited with them on the landline twice in the last two months to find out if there would be limited runs..answer, " none in the future for lack of sales and interest" They apparently would need an order of 250 K from a supplier to even consider a run even though the brass is still being manufactured for their loaded ammo..
Yup, I bought the last 200 rounds of new Hornady brass that I could find on the internet BEFORE I bought the rifle. I also have 98 rounds of factory ammo. Hopefully Hornady and Woodleigh will keep making proper bullets for it, but I did lay in a supply of them as well.
Do a google search and you’ll find quite a bit of information.
