I asked this question in the “Ask The Gunwriters” forum with no response. Maybe this is where I should have gone first. I see a lot of chatter about loading for the 6.5 CM using RL16, RL17, and H4350, but nothing about BG. I have to assume that some have tried this powder but maybe with no success. I would like to hear from a few who have tried it and with what result.
I haven’t tried Big Game, but Hunter works really well with 123gr bullets in two different 6.5s that I have.
Guys, I see Big Game listed for this chambering in both the Nosler manual and the reloading guide from Western Powder. I’m just interested whether or not anyone has tried it in their load work-ups.
I appreciate the suggestion on Hunter, but I don’t have any in stock at the moment. I’ll see if I can’t lay my hands on some. I do have lots of Big Game, the reason for my original question. If someone out there can tell me a reason not to try Big Game in 6.5 CM I’d appreciate it. Otherwise I’m gonna load some up and give it a try.
What bullet weight(s)? You have it and don't seem to want to buy anything else, so of course try it. I've used it to my satisfaction but there may be newer better powders available since I bought this jug.
Thanks for the reply, Whitetail. It isn’t that I don’t want to buy other powders, I just have a bunch of Big Game on hand that is the best powder I have found for my 7mm-08. I am simply wondering if anyone is using BG in the 6.5 CM as I have a newly acquired rifle in that chambering for which I am just starting load work-up. For the time being, I will be working with bullet weights ranging from 120 to 143 grains. I also have some of the newer and maybe better powders on hand such as RL16 and RL17, but are they better or will BG work as well in the CM. That was my question.
It works really well with light bullets in the 260, so I’d expect the same in the Creed. I got 3200 with the 100ttsx in a 22” 260.
In the 120-130 range you'll give up a bit of velocity with BG if that's a concern. Above 130 I'd look at something different than BG. I'm using it with 127 LRX because that's what I have on-hand that Barnes has data for.
I also have 8 lb jugs of hunter and big game and having hard time fining data.
I got 130 gr. Sierra game changers and 127 Lrx to start out with. I see Barnes has big game with 127 at 2779. Would I get more velocity with hunter?
Ram shots PDF has 120s and 140s listed but nothing for 130.
Any suggestion for min and max load.
