to 6mm.....

talked to a guy at our range today... that was out of California...

he was checking the zero on his rifle....

was shooting a 280 AI ( Nosler Brass) and necked down to 6mm....

It looked kinda cool, like a mini Atlas Missile....

despite being cool looking... Kinda over bore don'tcha think?

He said it was a flat shooting sucker... I wouldn't doubt that...

betcha its a barrel burner tho...

I'd agree with your assessment, John. That should hold even more powder than a 6-284 by a bit, and that one pushes the envelope just a tad beyond practicality, IMO. But that is my own opinion, and we all have our own. I do find the idea of finding out just how much a guy can wring outa something like that intriguing, though.

Well, if that’s what “floats your boat”......new barrels aren’t that expensive. With a good high BC bullet, either bonded or mono....it should be a good long range hunting rig for “smallish” big game! memtb

"240 Weatherby, table for two."

Not quite. The 240 wby. being a belted case on the '06 head size has a slimmer case body, and hence less powder capacity.

With 100-105gr stuff it should be pretty close in speed to a 25-06AI with 100's, in theory. The 280AI case bumps up capacity a bit more over the '06AI case, but the slightly smaller bore would offset that advantage. The 6mm-06AI is really nothing new either, and it'd be just a bit less in capacity.

Good catch. I'd not checked case dimensions on the 240 in forever a day and six months.

Necked one down to 6.5. I like it.

I have a 24 inch 700 in 6mm-284. I usually run 95 gr ballistic tips in it. It burns plenty of powder and load data is pretty much interchangeable with 240 Wea. I am afraid the 6mm-280AI would be just a bit too much of a good thing.

That would be the go.

ya know, for a hunting round that doesn't get a lot of high volume shooting like a varmint rifle... I bet the rifle would have a decent barrel life...
with all things considered...

True enough. Intended use matters. If such a rifle came my way and I liked the rifle enough, I'd snag it. That's why there is a 6-284 in my safe. The throat is well on the way to demise, but it still shoots well enough to use. I do use it, too, but sparingly. The last hog I killed felt its sting (briefly).

Similar to Kenny Jarret's 6mm Cat Bird on the 270 case. I have been getting into the same velocity range as the 240 Weatherby with the 6mm AI.

I think diminishing returns start to increase significantly when you go much over 6/284 or 240 W in capacity. If I ever do a 6-06 it may just be the standard case not the AI. I think the 6.5 version can use the extra capacity though.

6STW FTW!

Stumbled onto a batch of 7mm Rem Short action Ultra Mag brass also... that was yesterday...

eyeballing that case... that necked down to 6mm seems like it might even be more appealing....

impractical, but I have enough practical stuff...

getting off the reservation once in a while ain't a bad thing...

That is what Weatherby should have introduced instead of their new 6.5.
