Hodgdon H380 - 24hourcampfire

I have a thread seeking input on everyones favorite powder to use in the 7mm-08 remington with 150 grain bullets. In looking further into this adventure I see that Nosler lists H380 as the most accurate powder they tested with their 150 grain bullets in that cartridge.

With all of the new super duper powders on the market, and new powders coming out all of the time, what are your thoughts and opinions on the "old" H380?

H-380 is a hoss in the 338-06. Speed and accuracy.

I do use Varget with the 160 TTSX, H-380 for the rest.

H380 was an all around powder back in the day. I have tried it in 223, 243, 22.250, 220 Swift and 25.06. It worked well enough in all except I did have to use a mag primer in 25.06 to stop hang fires. My reason for this was back in the powder shortage I could always find H380 on the shelf when others were unobtainium.

It's a great all round powder.

I have a good stock of mil surplus H380.

Use it in 243 308 and 7 08 found it works well in all three.

My favorite 22-250 powder!

The Mil-Surp version (WC-852) is superb in my 7x64 and 7x57.

Way too temperature sensitive, I quit using it a long time ago after it being the only powder I've ever blown a primer with.

There's a lot better stuff out there now, I'd only choose it if I had a bunch sitting around. Heck, I do have a bunch sitting around and I don't even use it any more.

I agree 100% !!!!!!!!!!!! can't imagine ever using this powder again........been giving it away to friends who want it and think it works for them, free is good !!!
most temp sensitive powder I have ever used !!!!!!

I like it for max loads with relatively low sectional density bullets. Magnum primers reduced velocity spreads in Swift and .22-250. It could even be regarded as the single best powder for those two.

It's supposed to work well in the .375s, but I got unacceptably high ES even at max.

Could not disagree more !!!!!!!!!!!! we can all have our own opinions though

I have used it most with 86-7 grain bullets in a .250-3000. Accuracy is okay but burns dirty.

Feel the same way with H 335....

but I do use a lot of H 380... just know when I am using in hot temps, not to use max charges...

its great for the 223... not many use it any more... however if ya did, you'd find, that make load is low pressure in the 223... and most bullet weights common to the 223, , MV is right at 3100 fps...

a favorite for deer hunting is the 70 grain Speer SMP, 28 grains H 380.... 2900 fps...

and as mentioned by a few in the know.... for the max performance of velocity and accuracy in the 338/06...

I'm with you on H335, it's not only temp sensitive but has a high flame temp and will heat up a barrel faster than any other powder I can think of.
Used up all my H380 and H335 and will NEVER buy anymore, like Crow hunter says "a lot better stuff out there now"

It's all relative.

You can still get H335 for $20.00 per pound, and I think I paid even less for my H380.

I’m going to try it in my 7-08 under 150 eTip once I’m done chasing kids to hockey tourneys every weekend. I’ll let you know. I’ve got a decent load with it with 139 Interlocks that I’m going to try to tune as well. Let me know what you find with your 150gr trials. There isn’t much data out there for that weight. Obviously eTip loads will be different than your eld...

Speaking of heavier 7-08 loads. Anyone know if a Rem 700 will stabilize a168gr? I don’t know what twist Rem used in 2001 for the 7-08 but I’m guessing 1:9.

I agree on the temperature sensitivity but I do use it in one 22-250 in summer months. My other predator rifles are all using Varget especially for winter predators.

I like h380 in 22 2500 and 7mm 08. specifically I use it with the 140 tsx and 150 e tip.
