I have 2 222 1/9 twist rifles a Steyr SBS with a pencil thin fluted barrel and Ruger #1A.
Looking for a load using 55 gr Hornady bullets as I have a large number of these, any suggestions?
Thank You
F
I use that bullet quite a bit in a 9 twist 222 Mag. It’s good with CFE223, Leverlution, TAC, 335, BLC2, and probably others I’m forgetting. Great bullet and no worries about the twist, it’ll work fine.
I have had good results with them in much slower twists. What powders do you have. Jumping out there looking for a specific powder might be work. A big number of powders will work just fine. My favorite 222 powder was IMR 4198.
Yeah...Ive got the same Ruger #1A and it was liking 19.5 gr. 4198 and that Hornady 55 seated out a bit, must have a throat on that gun...
Anyway it shot an inch with that load and FWIW when I tried a 55NBT and a max charge of CFE223 it really liked that!
Killed pigs and javelina and coyotes and such with the little Ruger
Surprised two have mentioned CFE223, I have had ZERO luck with that powder in 222. I'd suggest VVN130 or LT32
I’ve had luck with 55 gr Ballistic Tips and LT32
IMR 4895 will surprise you with the 55 Hornady SP. Work up to 23 - 24 grains.

Good to know. I just ordered a 1in 9 twist .222 barrel for a build. Thats the bullet its going to get...and probably the powder too.
