Anyone have any pet loads for the .17 cal. Mach IV that they are willing to share? I have all of the old Woodchuck's Den info - Thanks in advance.
Dave
Steve Timm's best loads w/ 25 gr Hornady HP are:
19.0 - 19.5 gr H-322
20.0 gr H-335
15 to 19 grains of H 322 is what I use with a 20 grain V Max... but that is in a 17 Fireball... close enough for comparisons...
For years the deal in a MIV was 335 powder. About '90 an article in Precision Shooting went int great depth about the MachIV and making it work in 700 action. And 2230 powder. The stuff works great for me too. Best accuracy with 25gr bullets and 19.5/2230 doing about 3900......10twist PacNor. That's my rifle, work up load for your own.
FLPanhandle: Welcome to the CampFire Dave - I hope you enjoy your stay.
Years ago I had a custom Rifle built on a Remington 700 action in caliber 17 Mach IV. It has a HEAVY 26 1/2" Shilen stainless barrel, Jewell trigger and a "Model 70 Winchester Marksman" profile fiberglass stock.
It weighs 11 pounds and 14 ounces with Leupold high powered variable scope.
It shoots just about everything "VERY" well!
I did load development with H 4198, IMR 4227, H 322, AA 2460 and W 748 powders!
Like I said it shot most every load I tried very well - but I settled on 19.0 grains of W 748 powder, Federal 205 M (Match) primers and Berger 25 grain bullets in re-formed Remington 221 Remington Fireball brass.
I enjoyed shooting and Hunting with this Rifle/caliber so much that I later bought a Remington 700 VSF (heavy 26" fluted barrel with Varmint style stock) in the 17 Remington Fireball (the 17 Mach IV's twin).
I immediately tried my favored load of 19.0 grains of W 748, Federal 205 M (Match) primers and the Berger 25 grainers in Remington 17 Remington Fireball brass and it shot so well I have never tried a different loading in it to this day!
Best of luck with your 17 Mach IV.

Ackman, I wish I could read that 90's Precision Shooting article!! Thanks
VarmintGuy, Your comments were well received - Thank you.
My 17 Mach IV was built on a Rem. 700 action by John Lewis of Carolina Precision Rifles back around '98. I too, reform 221 Fireball brass by using the Redding reforming tools and RCBS reloading dies.
Thanks to all,

will have to try some 748 for my Fireball... one of my favorite powders.. for a ball powder, it works well in every thing...
one of those powders one could never have enough of on the shelf...
I need to get around to putting this short 18 inch Fireball barrel on the 35 Legend Savage Action I picked up for this project, before Wally World quit selling firearms locally....
n133 or benchmark work great.
I've shot about 6500 rounds worth of 18.2 of VV N-133 with a 25 HP at 3850. Excellent load.
Benchmark and 25 VMAX if you have a 1 in 9 twist.
Would the 17 MIV be hard on barrels?
Better on barrels than a .17 Rem.
I've shot about 6500 rounds worth of 18.2 of VV N-133 with a 25 HP at 3850. Excellent load.
But did you hit anything?

Yep, I hit the ones that you just missed.

Was that from the same barrel? What do you think barrel life us? I have put 800 through my fireball since last fall. Wondering how long it will last
In the 17 Fireball cousin, Benchmark & IMR 8208 XBR have been my preferred propellants pushing 25 & 30 grain projectiles.
