We found gophers out on the snow and took advantage of their plight and sprayed the snow with gopher blood from the newly acquired 22 Hornet...

Too cool.

It's a good looking keeper.

Not bad.

What rifle is that? It’s a looker.
I really like the 22H as a 200 yd or less varmint gun.

I can’t get over that stock. 😁 It’s simply amazing what Mother Nature can do inside a tree trunk. 😁

They were pretty much all 16" twists, which is fine for 45gr and lighter Hornet bullets. Faster twists and heavy bullets are kind of counter productive in a Hornet - it'll never be a "long range kill 'em out at the periphery of your vision" cartridge. One of my four Hornets has a fast twist, 1-9" (a European gun), and it handles 60's like nobody's business accuracy-wise, but those heavy bullets with their thicker jackets made for much higher velocity don't expand worth a crap at Hornet velocities. Sure, the range is extended somewhat but then bullet drop compensation raises its ugly head and wind has a more deleterious effect because they're only loafing along. Use a Hornet like it's intended and life is good.

I swear, Kirk, I'm gonna pack the trunk full of Hornet rifles and drive to Montana some day for a taste of those little varmints!

Does the CZ count as "back in the day"? Matter of semantics I suppose.

It's a later version, not sure date of manufacture, but more modern than vintage.

I’m hoping to get a crack at a turkey next month with my Low Wall. Dialed it in yesterday with its “new” Burris Mini 6x and 46gr Speer FPs over 9gr of H110. If the final 3-shot group I fired at 50 yards isn’t a fluke, I can literally aim for the eye.👁️

I had another Mini 6x with AO on it, but that one was needed on my 457 Premier. Fortuitously, a member here came through just in time with a standard version. Really like those little scopes.

Shrap’s new rifle is a real heart-pounder.

Any progress on identifying the builder, Kirk?
Posted By: HawkI Re: Bloodied The 22 Hornet - 03/18/23
Awesome looking gun.

You need some 35/33gr. VMaxes or some 33gr Speers; they'll run in the Mag better and still blow stuff up.

Nope, I was looking at some Burgess and Kennedy builds and there are similarities. I am hoping to show it to Monte Mandarino in Kalispell and see if he can recognize the maker…

Would think the list of master smiths who could shorten and weld that action and bolt, plus perform that level of wood craftsmanship would probably be pretty short.

Possibly could have been a collaboration between more than one smith.

Well, I have to correct that statement. My CZ is 16 twist.

I had been reviewing this link.

Took it to Kalispell gun show and asked Monte Mandarino, he couldn’t ID it. He did say some of the work looked like Burgess though…

Bob West of Eugene Oregon did this kind of work when he was alive. Shortened actions, converting right hand bolts to left hand, barrel work. His checkering was unbelievable even when he was 80 years old. Every stock I have seen that he made had a fairly open grip. Just a possibility. Here's the .375 H&H he built for me on a original left hand action.

That shortened model 70 hornet is fascinating. I'd love to get a close look at the metalwork. Beautiful rifle.

I would give a shout to Jim Wisner on the build.
