A buddy & I had planned on loading some sabots up for varmint hunting to use in our .308 Savage's. After reading a couple of different forums we decided not to. Everybody seemed to bash sabots. About 2 weeks ago I obtained a box of factory loaded .308 Accelerators, I took them out and shot them at 100 yards and found 3 shots in less than 1". Has anybody else shot these with good results and why are they looked down upon so badly?
I haven't shot any of the factory stuff but I've been messing with the sabots from JD components. I haven't been able to get the accuracy I want in the 06 or the 308, but the 30-30 AI is showing real promise. The biggest problem I'm having is finding a 55 gr. bullet I feel comfortable with loading the magazine full.
Forgive my ignorance, why 55 grain? Check P/N 144114 @
www.midwayusa.com I also did a search for Hornady and then did a search w/in for 55 grain and found several types. Hope this helps.

55 gr. because that appears to be what Jd has engineered the sabots for. I've tried some 63 gr. semi spitzers , and 46 gr hollow points, but can't seem to get the accuracy of the 55's.
As I'm doing this in a 30-30 rifle, I firmly believe I don't want pointy bullets pushing on the primer of the cartridge in front of it in the magazine.
Forgive MY ignorance, but why bother with sabots in the first place???
Because they're there. Besides all that launching something out of a 20 in barrel 30-30 at 4000 fps is something that just don't happen everyday.
"Because it's there" is a good enough reason for me.
Fan of George Leigh Mallory here.

AND with little barrel wear. I was thinking of my use in a box magazine in my 308, not the 30-30.
