Just pick up a new 243 with a 1-10 twist. I need 2 good bullet recommendations for this rifle. Rifle will only be used for woodchucks and coyote.
60 grain sierra hollowpoint. has shot the best groups, other than the 85 grain sierra bthp, out of my .243's i have owned.
55 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip fast, deadly, accurate.
70gr Nosler BT.
Shot alotta 60gr Sierra hp's outta the one I had. Accurate lil buggars
70gr Nosler BT.
anouther vote here
60s over a stiff H414 charge was one hole in my AII Sako sporter.
70s over Varget or IMR4350
87 Vmax over either 4350 for reach/wind.
The heavier the more impact and better wind resistance...all will do. Just how far do you want to shoot, and how windy...
I haven't found any bad bullets in a 243....so pick your poison...
I admit to shooting a lot of Hornady 75 grain HPs tho..
they use to be cheap, plentiful and do an excellent job... both accurate and deadly...
plenty good enough for Antelope sized Blacktails...even without ratcheting up their MV...
70gr Nosler BT.
Big time the way I'd fly, that or the 70 TNT and no flies on the 75 VMax either. Try a couple and let your rig tell you which way to fly.
What kind of ranges you gonna be driving them at?

I need 2 good bullet recommendations....
Rifle will only be used for woodchucks and coyote.
I use 70 gr Sierra MatchKings and 70 gr Nosler ballistic Tips out of all of my 243s and 6mm Remingtons.
Haven't found a rifle yet that won't shoot either one of them just fine.
And I use them on groundhogs all the time.
My 223 has the short range calling 0-350 yards so this 243 will be from 300-500 yards. My 223 shoots 50gr v-max very well but wind starts playing with it at 300. So this one should need to buck the wind better.
70gr Sierra Blitzking is another good choice. They run great thru my .243win-10 twist.
Of various bullets tried, in my nephew's rifle the 58 gr V-Max is the most accurate varmint bullet. In my rifle the 65 gr V-Max is the most accurate, with the heavier and lighter V-Max's close behind. I settled on the 75 gr V-Max as my "standard" as it's point of impact was where I wanted it in relation to the heavier deer bullets without having to touch the scope.
I tried to find a good load for the 70 gr NBT, but, while still quite good, it came in fourth place behind the three V-Max bullets in my particular rifle. There are so many good bullets available that it would almost be impossible to find the "best" one. Have fun.
I am with Seafire on the Hornady 75 HP bullets. Using 4350, the gun shoots sub minute groups at 200 yards. Although I really had to work up carefully to find the right load.
have had and shot several .243's. how i go about it is load to the length where you just contact rifling. shows tiny marks on the bullet but will not get stuck.
remington 9.5 primers, 41 to 43 grains varget with the 60 grain sierras.
same everything but 36 to 38 grains varget with the 85 sierras. h4350 works with the 85's too.
have yet to have one that wouldn't shoot 1/2" or so with this recipe.
i'd second the 75gr vmax
Ed
My 243 shoot's the 75gr V-Max abd the 75gr HP to the same poi. Love that V-Max
+1 on the 55 grain NBT. I found my load with H414...just like the Nosler book said.
I had outstanding results with Speer 70-grain TNTs over 760 in my 243. Wonderful groups, and nifty explosions on rock chucks. Not sure about that bullet vs. alternatives for 500 yards; never tried shooting it that far. I've never had reason to complain about TNT in terms of terminal performance, though.
In fact, I'm about to be the owner of a 243 once again here shortly; maybe I'll pick up some more TNTs this week...
Based off of the range you're talking, I'd first try the 87 gr V-Max. They have the best BC in a varmint bullet and are very destructive.
Next I would then opt for the Barnes 85gr TSX for deer size game, should you decide to step it up and use it for that purpose.
Speer 75g HP...shot really wel outta my Tikka with a 10 twist
What Blackheart said. 85gr Sierra HPBT. I drive mine with 44.4gr of H4831 (one step below max in the Sierra manual I was using meny years ago) and a CCI 200.
My first 5-shot group went 5/8" out of a stock Rem 700ADL at 100. I can tell you for a fact it will turn a groundhog inside out. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it'll do the same for the coyote, so it's likely to ruin the pelt.
Some use the same bullet for deer, though I really want more penetration on deer. For deer, I'll usually step up to a 100gr bullet.
I like the 75 gr V-Max and the 70 gr Sierra BK over 39 - 40 gr of Varget.
My 223 has the short range calling 0-350 yards so this 243 will be from 300-500 yards. My 223 shoots 50gr v-max very well but wind starts playing with it at 300. So this one should need to buck the wind better.
Try the 87VMax. If it's accurate for you, nothing will outfly it at range in the wind except the 105AMax.
Another vote for the 75 grain Vmax.
87 v max
85 sierra boat tail
The best bullets in my .243 1/10" are 70gr nosler BT, sierras 85g gameking HP & the 95 nosler hunting BT all moa to 400yds easy.
Try the 55 grain Sierra BlitzKings. Terminal performance is spectacular.
58 grain Vmax over varget flattens coyotes to 300 yards, I haven't tried it any farther.
That Sierra 85gr BTHP no. 1530 is a great bullet and accurate as they come. I use it for prairie dogs, chucks and coyotes out of my Ruger 243 heavy barrel and have taken large mule deer with it out of my Sako 243 Mod 75.
75gr Vmax
Or
70gr Nosler B/T
I would vote for the 87gr V-Max. Great BC, generally shoots well in most rifles, great performance on small game, and it gives enough bullet just in case you see a deer (during season) that you just can't resist. T.S.
Out of the bullets recommended on this thread, which would be the best for saving coyote hides and whatnot?
i have shot alot(20-30) yotes from 100- 300 yrds. with no exit with70gr NBT. running aound 3500fps
which would be the best for saving coyote hides and whatnot?
in a 243? kinda like askin a big block ford to get decent mpg isnt it?
Sierra Makes an 90 grain FMJ for pelts...Hornady has an 80 grain FMJ for that reason also...
plus on game the size of a coyote, a fast moving 90 to 105 grain softpoint, or a match bullet is going to pass right thru the animal before the bullet has a chance to open up...except if you hit bone... such as a shoulder or backbone...
as for myself, if I get a chance to pull the plug on one of those little fawn killers, I could care less how much I waste the darn thing...I have no use for a flea bitten coyote hide...

AMEN!!!!!
so? how did she shoot
so? how did she shoot
I'm smack in the middle of deer season. Have not even put a scope on it. Son decide to use my 223 and we'll work on his new 243 this winter after season. The 223 is a howa with a hogue stock so he will be comfortable behind the 243 when its time.
75 grain VMax or 70 grain NBT.
