What are you wanting to do?
Posted By: nitrosonic Re: 17 Cal bullet Choice - 02/17/14
Chucks other vermin maybe a fox or coyote if one shows up,But leaning toward the smaller stuff
Accuracy has always been foremost
Posted By: laker Re: 17 Cal bullet Choice - 02/17/14
I would say 25 grain vmax for small vermin and 25 grain bergers (if you can find some that haven't been snatched up) or 25 grain hornady hollow point or 30 grain kindler golds for coyotes. I haven't tried the golds but I would like to and have read good reports on coyotes.

I had a few hundred Hornadys that got stolen with the rest of my stuff, but I've heard the bergers' are more accurate
What should a box of 100 hornadys go for these days ,there are none around here, but i've located some
Thanks Rich

There are two Bergers. The Varmint and the Match. Good goddammed luck finding the Match version right now. Both shoot great, but the Match version is more better for coyotes.

The 25gr. Hornady's also come in two varieties. The HP and the V-Max. Good goddammmed luck finding the HP version right now. Both shoot great but the HP version is more better for coyotes.

The 20 grainers are made for all these peasants shooting Fireballs and Hornets these days. They would be my last choice in your cartridges but they will also make small critters die. No doubt about that.

Box of the 25gr. V-Max should run you about $15.00-$16.00. PM me if you're in a bind.

If hides don't matter, the Hornady 25 VMax is the way to go, for accuracy and slipperyness.

I can only find (1) .172 cal bullet on [color:#3333FF]Berger's website, and they call that bullet #17308.

Is [color:#3333FF]this the Match bullet you're talking bout.?

I think berger actually quit making the 25 grain match

No. Berger quit making them. I thought it was due to high demand, but they may have stopped making them altogether.

Nitrosonic: If you can find them the Berger 17's are tops for accuracy in my 3 - 17 Remingtons, my 17 MachIV and my 17 Remington Fireball!
This bullet would also be my first choice for the Rock Chucks, Badgers, Fox and Coyote.
Best of luck to you.

Is that Berger I linked to adequate for varmints up to coyotes?

I've got a .17 Rem and can reload, but just haven't had a need as of yet. If I do relaod, I'd like 1 load for the gamut as I don't have near the varmint opportunities you guys up North have.

I've got 150 or so of the "peasant" v-max 20gr's and I've still got a couple boxes of Rem factory to burn up.

Have shot mostly paper with it, but I do know the factory load is Hell on geese... eek

They'll work, they just aren't the perfection that the Hornady HP and Berger Match are. You can't go wrong with the 25gr. V-Max or the Berger Varmint in my opinion.

The old Remington HP's were pretty bad ass too. But they're long gone.

If you guys need to know what the ultimate .17 Rem looks like, check out my post in the Predator/Varmint section.

If you are looking for another option, this guy is doing specialty bullets. I have not used them but some guys on saubier speak highly of them.

For sure, the Kindler Gold 30 is the ultimate coyote bullet in the 17 Remington. Takes a Remington twist to get it done.
Posted By: T_O_M Re: 17 Cal bullet Choice - 02/22/14
My favorite .17 Remington bullet for coyotes was the old Remington 25 grain HP. They discontinued it long ago and switched to using the Hornady version in their factory ammo.

If you can get any of those Remington bullets, give 'em a try on coyotes. They're a better bullet than the Hornady 25 grain HP.

Otherwise I'd probably just find a good load for the 25 grain VMAX and run with it. They'd just hit the market when I had my last .17 Rem. It got delusions of being a .22-250 with that bullet. Impressive results.

I just purchased 500 of the 25 gr V-Max to try in my 17 Remington. May use IMR 4007SC with these bullets.
