I will have one to pick up by the end of the week, standard 22" barrel. I was wondering if anyone is finding any success with 60grn hornady, 63grn sierra, or 65grn sierrea's. Would be interested in hearing about 75grn hornadys as well if anyone has experiennce with them.

I will be using it as a back porch deer rifle, and plinker.

Just seeing what components I should be looking for through the week.

Look in the book for your twist rate.
You'll need at least a 9 for 75s.
10 should be just fine for 68s and under.

davet, its a 1/8 twist, i found good luck with 69grain Sierra HPBT over 24 grains of Varget..Good luck,Paul

I've had some issues finding accurate loads with the 75 Amax. Ive tried 2000MR,Varget, RL15, and IMR4320. So far, its not looking too promising.

Same thing with the 60 grain Partion. Groups right around 1.5" at 100 yds.

Funny thing is, my rifle will put 77 grain Nosler match bullets into 5/8" with 22.4 grains of IMR4320, but not with any other powders I've tried so far with that bullet...kinda a mystery wrapped up in an enigma...

Make sure to measure your distance to the lands with whatever bullets you use. I cannot chamber a lot of factory ammo or many of the shorter bullets loaded to 2.25" due to a very short throat...

Magazine allows the same cartridge length as an AR magazine...

The twist will handle anything you feed it under 80 grains ( and including 80 grains).. it is just you have to seat the bullets very very deep into the case...

75BTHPs are a little more user friendly in that aspect, than the 75 A Maxes... I have shot the 80 grain A Maxes and various 80 grain Match bullets out of mine, with fine results...

Its a pain, but I have been single feeding them seated out as far as the throat will take them, which is longer than the magazine for sure...

Mine is the Predator Model, so I don't know if there is a difference with it and the standard Model American....

our forum member Cotis has a thread going where he is making an extension to the factory mag, which will handle the longer bullets seated further out... that and having the throat reamed out a hair should turn the American into a much more desirable and capable rifle...offering a lot more versatility...

Why anybody would want to touch the throat is beyond me. They're about perfect as is.

to each their own....I like the 80 grain A Max...so the throat on mine isn't perfect...

My Hawkeye 223 loves the 65 gr Sierra GK, which isn't an expensive bullet, which makes it good for plinking and for critters. The Partition is great, but not cheap. And I've always had good luck with accuracy in the 223 and 220 using the Sierra 63 gr SMP. I've just switched over to the Nosler 64 gr BSB for pigs and other larger critters, though I haven't tried it out on a pig yet. Shoots good though in the 223 and, much to my surprise and joy, it stabilized and shot little groups in the 220 Swift.

What powder are you loading for the 65grn in your .223?

I'd reach for RL 15 or H 380....

I have had good luck with benchmark for the 65 SGK in the 223 AI. good velocity and excellet accuracy. Can't see why it wouldn't work as well for the 223 normal

I was able to find Imr4320, some 65grn Sierra's, winchester brass, and CCI 400's.

After messing around with powder charges and seating depth I have a decent load with 24.5g of Imr4320, and the sierra seated to 2.2665 COL. Yesterday I shot seven into less than MOA before the 8th shot went high. Good enough for what I intend to do.

FYI I was able to load the 65grn Sierra out to 2.282" COL and still cycle through the factory magazine.

I didn't have any issues with cycling the RAR until yesterday with the 8 shot group, I had two hit hard going in and flattened the tips of the sierra. I will have to figure that out, but otherwise am happy with the results so far.
