I have a .257 Roberts with a 24" Kreiger 1:9/12" twist barrel
I have some deer/antelope loads that I'm happy with and would like to work up some for coyotes. Was hoping to get some advice from the fire shooters on some combos that have worked for them on yotes in the "Bob".

An 87 grain SP would be good as well as the 75 grain V Max.

I always felt the 85 grain Ballistic Tip was too tough to be a good coyote bullet.

Used the Sierra 90 grain BTHP on a few deer, should be okay on coyotes although it may be a fuzz tough as it always shot through our midwest whitetails.

What bullet are you currently using for antelope/deer?

Never used the 100 grain Sierra GK on coyotes but I would have tried had one ever came along while I was carrying my Bob loaded with that bullet.

Do you want a "fur friendly" bullet/load or are you just whacking them?

Using the 100gr. Ballistic tip at 3020...great groups.

Well OK then, the 75 grain Hornady V-Max will light them up.

I used to load them in my twin "Bobs" until I started taking them to the local fur buyers.

Rem. case, CCI 200, 42-43 grs H4895, 3300 fps 22" barrel.

54 grains of Hybrid 100V will push an 85 grain Nosler BT 3,490.

I liked the 75 grain v max.

The 75 grain VMAX will move on out at over 3,500 with H414.

About any loads you have for the Bob will work on coyotes...just depends on whether you was to save the fur.

Be a hard one to beat for an all around load although you may get a few runners with that bullet as it is reported to be fairly stout for a 100 grain 25 caliber bullet.

That 75 grain V Max will be a lights out bullet but stay off of shoulders.

Shoulder hits may require a finishing shot as this bullet is very fragile, at least when pushed to max velocity from a 26" barreled 25-06.

Regarding the Sierra 90 grain bthp, I and several others don't believe Sierra's advertising and quit using it in our 250-3000 and .257 Roberts rifles on whitetails 10-15 years ago. Not reliable. Did they improve them recently?

It is my experience the Hornady 75 grain V-Max punch shoulders on coyotes when started at 3300 fps from a .257 Roberts.

Dunno.

I was shooting those in about 2002-2004. Never had any issues in a Robert's at our woods ranges that go from 10-75 yards or so.

Agreed. The 75 Vmax and the 80 Gr TTSX shot to same point with my Kimber and could take just about anything with the two.
Thanks fellas...appreciate all the input!
Thinking I'll pick up some of the V-Max's and start working up a recipe ....don't have any of the powders mentioned... H4895, H414, Hybrid 100V so will need to decide which to try first...might just depend on what's on the shelf.

Do have some H4350 and Varget on hand...anyone used either of these two?

The 75 grain VMax and Sierra HP are fast, accurate, and a great all around .257" varmint bullets, but not at all fur friendly.

The 90 grain Sierra BTHPs are also a good choice to shooting coyote with a .257" bore rifle.

I've shot hundreds of pdogs and well over 100 coyotes with the 75 grain VMax fired from a couple different Winchester/USRA 70s in 25 WSSMs.

I will give the Sierra 90 grain bthp another plug. It has proven to be the most accurate bullet in the 25 caliber rifles I have owned with one exception being the 1-14" ROT Savage 99s.

Just curious as to what issues were you having?

They shoot fine in my 1-14" ROT rifles, particularly good in my Shilen barreled 25 WSSM.

The only thing I could determine was both barrels had a ROT close to 1-15"

Issues regarding them not being dependable.

"splash" on shoulders.

I shoot a 25-204 with 75's at 3150fps, I've tried HP's Hornady and Sierra and V-max, coyote killers all but don't plan on saving fur. The only one I had stay in a coyote was a facing shot and the 75gr V-max didn't exit. I leave the rifle for deer hunting with 100gr Partitions. I save fur.
