I think you may be thinking of a 444. Marlin never made an 1895 in 44 mag.

I'm wasn't familiar with this model so I looked it up. This is a stainless, 16.5", non-ported barrel, right? Also, specs state a 1/38" twist. Is this correct? I would have thought it would have the newer 1/20" twist like my 1894P.

It would be a Remlin with a 1 in 38" twist. I have the same gun. Remington stuck with the slow twist. Hopefully Ruger changes it.

Just so there is no confusion, All 1894 Marlin 44 magnum caliber rifles no matter if it is a "P" or "SBL" stainless or blue, long or short were given a twist rate of 1/38. The only exception would be a custom barrel install after market, not by the factory. The only difference with the barrels were micro-groove or Ballard rifling. The rumor that the micro-groove barrels had shallow grooves is false, they actually had deeper grooves than the Ballard and more of them. The only "P" models with a 1/20 twist were 444 model 444 caliber 18&1/2" rifles.

Not to derail the thread, but my 1894P is definitely a 1/20". If the OP's rifle had the same twist, I'd likely try making a deal onon it.

Well, you obviously believe you have a 1/20 twist so as long as your happy that is all that counts. You may want to verify it with a cleaning rod just to erase any doubt. My information came from a person pretty high up in the Marlin company and I trust what he told me because he was the one to make the decision to stick with the 1/38 or change it.

There’s absolutely no problem with the 1 in 38” twist!

In my opinion it’s better than the 1 in 20”, because I shoot mostly cast bullets. But even with jacketed there’s nothing gained by spinning the bullets faster.

That is true, in fact that was the reason he gave me for sticking with the 1/38 twist.
