Went to a couple gun shows today hoping to find something to mess around with. Like all shows most things were over priced. I’m wandering around and notice a very clean 340A. I asked the seller if I can take a look. The rifle is near mint! Great stock, and a Lyman peep. I check the price and it’s very affordable. The 30-30 came home with me. I’ll be shooting her this week.

I know the old Savage bolt guns arent collectable but it was too clean to pass up.

An old guy came int my shop with one of those and wanted extensive custom work done to one of those
He wanted a switch barrel with 219 zipper
Everyon including me said I just wasn’t worth the effort. He didn’t care the price just wanted to do it for years and would write a page or two in his book
Sounded interesting so I took it on
I trued the action made a custom mount slicked up the bolt and did the best I could on the trigger and installed a benchmark barrel.
When I test fired it it shot 1/4 inch not bad for an ugly klunler. Always wonder if he got his book done.

Did they make a non drill scope mount for these? This isnt D&T.

I had its ugly cousin, a Steven’s 325. I shot cast bullets in it exclusively and was the first center fire rifle my youngest son ever shot. We put upwards of 5-600 cast bullets through that rifle and really had a lot of fun with it. I sold it two years ago and have a terrible case of sellers remorse.

Usually they are drilled and tapped on the left side so far down that some wood has to be removed if the stock is not already contoured for it.

That looks like an “A” model. Not sure it has the side tapped or not. Take it out of the stock and there will be plugs in the left side if so.

Here’s a side mount for it. But I’d shoot the heck out of that peep.

That’s a classic gun. At one time growing up I had the model 340 in 30-30, .22 Hornet, and .222 because that’s what I could afford. All were very accurate. I still have the .222 and it’s a sentimental favorite that’s slayed hundreds of groundhogs over the years. I think they offered this in .223 and .225 for a while too.

Buddy of mine has the 225 Winchester. Gotta be a pretty rare bird I would think.

Saw one in a pawn shop today. Didn't look at it but recognized it.

The old girl isnt drilled for the side mount scope. I’ll be using the peep. She’s to nice to drill.

My Old Man bought the twin to this one new in 1957. I was 4 years old and rode with him to the gun shop that day. The shop was located on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and they had endured a flood - all the rifles standing on a wall rack had a high water mark/stain halfway up the butt stocks, and were "flood sale priced." (I vaguely remember the scene, Dad filled in the details later in life.) He had his income tax refund burning a hole in his pocket, all of $60, and had sweet talked my Mom into letting him buy a deer rifle.

He was torn between the new Model 70 .30-06 for $60 which would've eaten up the whole amount he had to spend with nothing left over for ammo, or a Savage 340 .30-30 for $40. He reluctantly went with the Savage because there was enough left in the kitty for a couple boxes of ammo and a sheath knife to boot. Evidently he kicked himself in the ass for years afterward, although the rifle served him well and put a lot of venison on our supper table. It eventually became mine upon Dad's passing 34 years ago but I could never really warm up to it and kept it only for sentimental reasons. I've since passed it on to a nephew who wanted one of Dad's guns.

The main thing I remember of that day he bought the 340 was stopping for ice cream on the way home. That stop probably ate up the last of his mad money.

couldn't accurately say how many of these and the Stevens/Springfield variants i have had over the years. have a 222 that was my late brothers.
also a 30-30 and a hornet.
i don't really like the 340 but if i could scroll back year by year and look at my gun cabinet there would always be one there next to the 110's and 99's.
that sight on the op's rifle is worth as much as the rifle!

Honestly, one of my favorites for hunting the thick stuff here in PA. I love a 340 and would have jumped all over that one.

Is it for sale?

Still have my Dad's 340 30-30. It is a damn good shooter, and he dumped many a deer with that gun over the years. Will never part with.
