I'm selling a 1955 Winchester M70 Super Grade 30-06 with a rare National Match Barrel.

The forend is real ebony, not bakelite.

It originally came with a Lyman WH aperture sight but I replaced it with a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 with Alumina flip up covers. Since it has a National Match barrel the standard bases for the pre-64's would not work for it. I ended up using Talley steel bases for the Winchester Model 70 (.435" rear measurement and .865" fronts) Pre 64 Long Action Magnum (Double Extended Front) - 25XX704 - and 1" Screw Lock Detachable Rings in Low / Matte - M200003.

This is not a converted Target rifle and based on what I know from the private collector near New Haven that I bought it from this is a non catalogued Super Grade National Match with upgraded wood and a real ebony forend tip. One expert who looked at it felt it was factory upgraded wood and a very unique special order gun. It was sold to a gun shop by an old gentleman who it seems was the original order... bought it in the 50's and held onto it for 55 years before selling.

It has been hunted and there are some light marks but it has been gingerly cared for and is in great condition. I would say 90%+. The bore is in excellent condition.

Full disclosure for the collectors, I had the gun professionally bedded by Hill Country Rifles, a $500 expense, and had the bolt jeweled. Not all SG's came jeweled, per Rule, and I thought it made for an attractive view. It shoots VERY well and is not finicky. It especially likes 180 grain TSX.

The fit and finish on this rifle is amazing!

$2500 shipped including scope and rings!!

Thanks,
Eric

A few sample targets...

Sub MOA 5-shot groups are common. POI at the first shot is always dead on.

Wow Eric! You've been holdin back on me.... Free bump for one of the good ones here on the Fire
These kind of Pre64 M70s drive collectors crazy. The are not cataloged and therefore you cant find out if they are original special ordered. I have one very similar. Its a 1951 270 Win. that the owner took to Winchester ( he lived in New Haven)in 1955 and had the custom shop restock it with a Super Grade stock. The stock is made of French Walnut and has had the Monte Carlo converted to a Griffin & Howe type stock. I know this because after I bought the rifle the original owners son told me he had found the special order receipt. He wanted over $500 for the paperwork and I refused. Anyway, your rifle is a gem.
Stunning, gorgeous rifle there! You might want to lose the funky carry strap for the next pictures, though... smile

Ill take it per pm.....
Thanks for the comments everyone. This is a rifle I thought I'd never sell, but I have a few customs coming down the pike and need funds now. You know how that goes.. I think the pricing is very reasonable considering it comes with a $500 scope, Talley rings at another $50, HCR bedding at $500, Karl Kampfeld jeweling at $50... not to mention it's a Super Grade!

I know I'm going to regret selling this.

Eric
SPF to Hunthard!

I'm cringing in pain right now. #$^!#$@!^!. I can't think of a better guy to sell it to, though. Nice grab, Tim.

Eric
Yep she's my new girlfriend , I have a 220 swift super grade she will b sitting by. And a few other pre 64s 338,375,300 H&H . We seriously need to get together for a beer:)

Tim
Tim, she's going to be a reeeal nice addition to the lineup!

The 220 swift SG sounds pretty sweet!!

I'd love to get a brew. You obviously have great taste in rifles!! smile

Mark, that's my lucky sling! 1" climber spec tubular webbing. Strong, light, and adjusted for a perfect lock. smile

Eric
Nice 4 groove barrel too
Do the National Match have the Winchester Target trigger? I have a 300 H&H with the Target trigger and it is just about the best trigger of all the rifles I own. Breaks like glass at around 2 lbs.

Beautiful rifle. The unmolested Model 70's can be some really nice examples of artwork and craftsmanship, IMHO.

Bob
How could you tell it is a National Match barrel???
Nice rifle indeed.

A $500 bedding job though????? shocked
It is not a converted target rifle so no target trigger.

The easiest way to profile a National Match barrel is the .435" rear measurement and .865" front. Additonally, the front sight ramp should correctly not be machined to accept a hood.

Eric
Eric, I didn't think I'd ever see you get rid of that one... frown....Looks like it's going to a good home though...
Bump for a sweet rifle and good seller.
Wow! Shocked to see this sold....one of the nicest pre 64's on the CF!

Oh well, congrats to both Tim and Eric. wink
