Met my son this am for an early morning grouse hunt.

No birds. We have no dog and it was raining but he showed up with a neat little 870 LW in 20ga.

Never seen one like this. It's super handy. Admit, I'm not an 870 guy but are these common?

Not common, but not rare.

Remington 870 Special Field. Straight stock, 21-23" barrel, magazine tube shortened by length of one round. Very "pointy".

Down side is you can't use regular barrels. These guns use barrels that have the barrel hanger moved back to fit the shorter magazine tube.

IIRC, Remington made tbe Special Field Models from around 1984 to 1991 or so. In both the 870 and 1100 versions.
I’ve owned a few over the years. They were a great “handling” quail gun.
Rarely ever see one come up for sale around here, anymore. When you do see one, they usually bring a $200 to $300 premium over the standard 870’s and 1100’s.

Browning had one like that in the BPS too. I think they called it the BPS upland. Staight grip, 22" barrel. My brother had one.

Those old Wingmasters sure were nice. I "found" a like new 870 LW 20 gauge 28" modified in the wife's gun safe up north at her cottage. I'm going to give it a try on the sporting clays this winter because the thing points so well. I grew up with a 12 gauge 1100 and this 20 points better and weighs less.

Had one in 20 with the 21" barrel. It swung way to fast and I shot in front of everything. I SOLD IT. I checked out everything in a pump 20 to find the right balance and swing. Ended up with a hardwood stocked 870 express with a 26" barrel. Rough at first but many thousands of rounds later its smoothed out still have and use it. Tried to replace it several times with M12's and M37 but pretty is as pretty does and that express still is winning..

I got a 870 in 20 ga Fieldmaster with 26" barrel.....one sweet handling gun. Dove and quail it is perfect. Got a turkey choke for it and throws a wicked pattern with TSS #9. They are satin Walnut wood and matte finish, and just starting to show up in the stores around here.

That sounds like a nice field gun for sure! On the 20 gauge frame Ii have always preferred a 26" barrel and pistol grip type stock. I had one of those 1187 Special Field straight stock 23" barrel jobs that felt good in the store. But I couldn't hit squat with that shotgun.

The year after I bought mine Remington figured out the barrel was too short and bumped it to 23". Unfortunately they never did bring one out 25- 26" would have been sweet with the short mag tube...mb

I used to drool over those Special Field models. Great looking and great feeling.

I’m surprised that that Special Field LW comes with a three inch chamber. My 20 gauge LW 28” has 2 3/4” only stamped on the barrel.

I have ever owned one but seen a few. I did have a 20 ga 1100 like that once, they are neat little guns

Great shotguns. I've got the 12 and 20 Special field in 870 and the 1100 special field in 20. Some of my favorite shotguns.

Found a NIB 870 Wingmaster 20 Ga./28" Mod. from the '70's, before the LW receiver, at a pawnshop 50% off wknd sale a while back.

Lookin' at gettin' a couple of the 870 FieldMasters as Christmas presents for the boys this year, albeit in 12 Ga..

Reviews say that they are a tad heavier than the Wingmaster, so was thinkin' of goin' w/ a 26" Bbl. instead of the 28".

The Fieldmaster in 20 ga advertised 6.25 lb and the Wingmaster ga 6.1/8 lb....in 26" barrels. I have the Fieldmaster in a 26" barrel and it weighs 6 lb & 7 ozs on the nose, so the advertised price is off. The 28" barrel weighs 6 lb & 9 ozs. Not enough difference between the Wingmaster and the Fieldmaster to notice the weigh difference. I have a early 90's Wingmaster in 12 ga and the Fieldmaster is just as smooth cycling shells, in fact, I like it better because of the matte finish and the Walnut is a satin finish, as opposed to the Wingmaster in rich blued and high luster walnut. The fit of metal to wood is just as good as the Wingmaster....lot of gun for $450 out the door.

Hit that ole bowlin'-pin finish 870 furniture w/ a green scotch-bright pad... satins right up.

Specs say the 12 Ga. Fieldmaster 28" is a 1/4 lb. heavier than the same Bbl'ed Wingmaster.
