I have an older Ithaca police shotgun with the slam fire feature. Problem is the disconnector releases the sear while the bolt is still a full 1/4in away from lockup. It does this whether the trigger is being held back or not....you can drop the hammer while the bolt is out of battery. Other 37s I've owned dont allow the hammer to fall until the bolt is locked. Ive always thought JBs designs were fail safe, could something be broken that is causing this or is it some kind of internal adjustment that will fix it? Or is this just normal for some 37s? I assume the hammer will hit the back corner of the bolt group and not fire out of battery or is this a safety issue?
ShotgunWorld.com has a thread for Ithaca shotguns.
Very knowledgeable people there.
Sounds like you have a worn mechanism that's allowing the hammer tyo drop before the bolt is in battery. The hammer should not drop until the bolt is in battery. See the bottom of the text on the 2nd page.

Ithaca in Upper Sandusky Ohio works on all years M37s, whether they produced them or not. (Or they used to.) I would contact them. Their service is second to none.
