I've been wanting to make a display case for my grandfathers old 28ga. for years. He was given this gun as partial payment for chores done at the local doctors house in 1911. It had a broken stock. He fashoined the one it wears know himself. Did a fine job of it too! It looks like maple to me, and there used to be a big stand of it out behind the old homestead, right about where my garage is now. He carried this little 28 every time he chased small game, right up untill the late 60's. My father and uncles became concerned that it was going to blow up in his hands, so they went together and bought him a model 12 to replace it. About 15 years ago, my father and I cut down a large black walnut, cut into big slabs for gunstock blanks, and the rest into small boards. I made the case out of these smaller boards. It is nice to know that my grandfathers gun is sitting proudly in a display on top of my desk, and that both of them are made out of wood harvested from land that has been in the family since the 1760's

If you ever feel you would like to shoot Grandpa`s gun, RST outside of Montrose, Pa. loads a low pressure shell for it.
Dandy job on the showcase, for a deserving piece.

Very, very nice. Is that one of Grandpa's old hunting license back tags in the display case too? What make is the gun?

Yes it is 1915 Pa, county 35. The 28 gauge is a Westley Richards. That S&W model 1 1/2 next to the shotgun, was what my Great uncle used to run his trapline. Since he was born in 1889 I'm positive he didn't buy it new, but I sure wish I knew where how he aquired it. It might be the only firearm I have of my great-grandfathers, but I doubt it, it was probably bought used.

That's a great display case and features of your Grandfather's life! Nice, nice work. It is also really great you have not only a history of his life , but of your entire family's experience on that side and the property too.

Nice job!!
