Does anyone make a good quality semi 20ga that will adjust to fit a 9 year old girl and could be adapted as she grows? I was thinking Beretta, but a quick search didn't turn up anything.

Took my daughter dove hunting and she loved the single barrel 20ga so much I would like to get her something to help cultivate wing shooting. We could even get into sporting clays.

I don't know if any adapt very well. Youth models come with a short barrel to balance with the short stock. Lengthen the stock and it's out of balance. And if you shorten a standard shotgun you're starting them off with a shotgun that's out of balance the other way.

Our local 4-H Shooting Sports for trap shooting has Rem 1100's and 11-87's in 20 youth and they work very well for the kids though they can be a little on the heavy side for the smallest. We like them for the soft gas system and shooting one shell at a time the action locks open for safety. We have an 870 in 28 but you loose the felt recoil reduction and the shells are expensive. A couple of the kids have 870s and do fine.

My favorite is the Franchi 720 20 ga. that Pheasants Forever gave us. It's substantially lighter with an alloy receiver and is gas operated so you still have the reduced felt recoil. If a shooter is having trouble with the weight of the Remingtons we get him on the 720. I can manage a short stock, more or less, and it's just fun to shoot. Points like a dream. If you can find a used one grab it. Can take 3" shells, you turn the piston around to compensate.

When the kids outgrow the 20 youth models they all want a 12 ga. but then it is trap shooting.

Stocks and Barrels are easy to come by for guns like and 870 or 1100. I have a Trap grade 870 here with great wood on it, 30" barrel. I also have a youth length stock set, 21" Turkey/Coyote/Youth barrel and 26" vent rib choke tube barrels so I can set it up for any season and any shooter that wants to use it for much less than multiple shotguns.

Oops, wrong thread

I have a Youth 11-87 20 ga. my daughters use. It fits them well and they can hit with it, and aren't afraid of the mild recoil. I'll probably just sell it when they outgrow it and get them a full sized gun.

Weatherby makes the SA-08 youth 20ga. It has a 12 1/2" LOP and 24" barrel. The full size stock is a mere $55 from Weatherby.

It is the shortest LOP currently offered. Buy it, clean and go shoot 2 boxes of heavy 3" duck loads thru it, clean it again and let he have it. She will never be able to wear it out and will most likely never have an issue with it either.

It comes with a light and heavy piston that takes a few minutes to swap out, just make sure you are using the heavy piston during break in.
