In Canada - I can't find out where to get Brenneke's (which many conceed to be the deepest penetrating slug) and because I can't find them -I'm wondering what might be "second best."

I wished I could get Brenneke's "dangerous game" slugs - but can't.

What would you guess to be, the next deepest penetrating slug?

I need one for all the bears around here - when I'm hunting birds in and around the corn fields. I don't have a rifled barrel, but would happily get a rifled choke tube.

Any suggestions?

BCB - Are you interested only in factory slugs or do you do any casting?
In the vicinity of my home we are restricted to shotguns, muzzleloaders or archery. For the shotguns a buddy and I cast 525 grain Lyman slugs. The lead we use is from the seals found on bank money bags. I have no idea what its make up is. Since I was given about 400 lbs. of it I doubt if I will live long enough to use up what I have.
One small 8 point whitetail shot with this slug was hit in the point of the shoulder at about 110 to 115 paces while it was running. The shoulder was shattered, the exit hole was about .725 inch dia. When we skinned out the deer there was a hydrostatic shock ring over the entire off side. This is something I didn't think a shotgun could do. From my limited experience this is the deepest penetrating slug available.

I agree that the 1 3/8 oz Brennekes are very deep penetrating slugs. But Remington's new Buckhammers may even do them one better. They're claiming 22" of penetration with the same weight slug. They also have an additional 500 ft-lbs of energy at 100 yds, so I'm guessing they start out faster. However, Remington hasn't given any published velocities yet so I can't verify. Dixieslugs.com also lists some extremely heavy hard cast slugs that were made for dangerous game. Could be just the ticket for those bears. Best of luck!

I have just began slug hunting this year and I havent made a kill yet but I was also concerned with penetration. I made a frame that will hold water filled milk jugs in a straight line.I am not saying that this gives on game results but I was looking for a constant test media other than water logged paper, so I could compare penetration. The results went like this

rem 3inch 7/8oz hi-vel slugger penatrated 1 jug -very explosive

wolf 1oz penetrated 3 jugs

lightfield hybred 2 3/4 1 1/4oz penetrated 4 jugs explosive

rem buckhammer 2 3/4 1 1/4oz penetrated 5 jugs considerable damage

These were fired from 35yds The rem and lightfield split in half at the end of there path. The wolf was not very impressive at all but thebuckhammer had a perfect mushroom and appeared to retain 97% of its weight. I did not test any sabots because they are similar to muzzleloader performance and I have a decent knolegde of that. I hope this will give you some insight

I need to correct myself. The hybred is a sabot but it is .63cal. not .50 like most other sabots.

just my .02, but i am not a disciple of the remington buckhammers. they will, literaly, take a deer off his feet. one word of caution, penetration and meat damage will be severe in smaller deer. shot a doe during the doe only season and had to have it made into jerky. that was a shoulder shot that literally blew both shoulders apart into tiny fragments. just devasting. last year shot a 14 point buck that never walked 1 step. penetration was excellent. if you don't like to track animals very far get the buckhammers. haven't tried 3'' buckhammers that are new but the power isn't a whole lot more than the 2 3/4" loads. i will say that recoil can be a problem for the sensitive. i can shoot 3" slugs from other competitors all day long with no problem, but switch to buckhammers and i don't want to shoot a whole lot of them. don't feel it in the heat of the moment though

The buck I took this year with the Barnes' sabot penetrated the near shoulder back through one lung and the rear of the other lung, the liver and then exited. Pretty decent penetration but I don't think it penetrates as well as the buckhammers do.

Federal seems to load their Premium stuff on the light side. It's slower than just about anything else. They're sure nice to shoot from the bench though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
