Guys,

I am trying to keep an eye out for an SKB Model 100 sxs, 20 ga, 28" barrels, either under the Ithaca or SKS brand. I want a used, but not abused, one, for occasional hunting, in the 96% to 98% area. Honest wear is fine, as long as it flows, and has a tight action with the lever to the right.

But, there don't seem to be many of those out there on the gunboards, and those that are there seem to have asking prices going all over the place, from $800 to $1,200.

Any idea what a fair price would be for one of these in the condition I am seeking?

I note that the Savage Fox Model B, in the early years of 1949 to 1954,double triggers and splinter forearms, seem to go for the same price in that condition, and sometimes higher.

Any practical shooting difference between the two? I know the SKB is built like an absolute tank as far as reliability, but not so sure about those Fox Model Bs.

SKB over the Fox B every time.

Those little SKB 100's are great in the hand. I've seen them near new at the lower end of the range you posted. I've also seen them priced crazy high. They sell when priced right. Hold out and buy the best one you can under $1k.

Buy as many as you can painfully afford. You never regret nor loose money or performance buy selecting Sakaba.

Foxes are impressive considering they are 100-year old technology. Triggers are usually awful, but the action is a solid design.

The SKB 100 are three generations of technology later. Triggers are the best of ANY production (inexpensive) shotgun ever made.

Regulation of the Model B barrels was hit or miss, mostly miss. The SKB's are spot on 95% of the time.

Thanks for the advice.

I have read the plethora of information online regarding the tendency of the SKB 100 to crack on the sides of the buttstock, at the scallops. I guess I could send one off to a gunsmith for proper bedding, but that would be an extra $150 or so right off the bat.

However, I read one post, where a guy said that if you remove the buttstock, and file down (round off) the very sharp point on each side of the receiver that juts back into the stock, and then reinstall and properly tighten the buttstock, then it will never crack on the sides.

I know that it makes your teeth ache to think about taking a file to the receiver, but does anybody have any experience or learned opinions regarding this fix?

Glass bed right behind the scallops and tang leaving the finished wood surface alone and you will have no issues, ever.

Agreed, totally... Do NOT put a file to that action..

The 28" are harder to find. I have the 25" and like it quite a bit. Settled on it after striking out on finding an affordable BSS and never looked back.

I'd take an SKB over a BSS anyday! It's really too bad they don't continue to make these still.

I've had two SKB M100s and one M200E before the M100 I own now. I've not had one crack yet and like them a lot. The only negative I have with them is the fact they don't have double triggers. I like the extractor on the M100 better as well as it saves me picking up empties.

The current M100 is a 20ga with 28" bbls. Chokes have been opened up to IC/M. I sold a similar 25" in preference to the 28s as the handling is far better with the longer bbls. I recommend the 28" version for this reason.

you may want to consider the CZ Ringneck in 20 ga much better shotgun than most would think

I agree. I only have a CZ o/u in 410 now but have had several different variations and liked them all.

I think I have an SKB in my gun safe. I will look tomorrow.

They are good shotguns, but the wood can be very plain. I had a Bobwhite 20ga that was supposed to be the best of the batch to come into the LGS and the wood looked like cardboard. I sold it and went back to an SKB.

I have a 12gauge SKB model 100. Very nice shape Been looking for a 20 gauge, for awhile now. Once drove 3 hours one way to look at one, guy wanted 1,100. Called the guy sent me pictures i asked him no big dings,rust on barrels things like that. Nope all good he says. What a liar, was horrible. And the worst part is the guy kept on saying its 90percent. Was so bummed out i have'nt been looking anymore.

Mine is an SKB Royal Light 12 ga. but it does have 28" bbls. Been used some.

I have the Ithaca 200 E. it's in 20 gauge. From the factory it was choked F&M. I had Briley open up the full barrel to light modified. It works for me real well on blue quail which was what we had for the most part in South Texas where we hunt. These little guns are under rated in my opinion. Hasbeen

They are, but prices are increasing all the time.

Problem many of these "modern" classic SxSs is that parts are getting hard to find. The Parker Repros are worst in that regard, BSS parts also getting scarce now. Suspect same is true for SKB. The 100 is the pretty simple design; no auto ejectors so if you get a low use example and keep it clean and lubed should be OK. Nice light hunting shotgun.

Shorthand for all of that is the fact I have made a bunch of parts for numerous doubles from scratch and they all seem to work... finding parts does not scare me a lot.

I've bought 2 100's and a 200 off the classifieds here. 700, 750, and 800. All 3 were 25" 20's. The 100's were ic/mod and the 200 is sk/sk. I still have the 200 with no intention of selling.

I got a slightly used, like fired once, SKB 385 20 Ga just yesterday. My friend gave it to me. He bought it for $1150 the day before yesterday from a gentleman who needed the money. It has 28 inch barrels. Beaver tail forearm, and pistol grip.

Based on what I have seen so far, extremely high quality.

High quality but a different beast than the OP. Built on a full size 12 bore frame IIRC. Heavy too.
