What is/was made in a .410 pump action besides Mossberg 500, Remington 870 or Browning with the BPS?

Thinking of a pump 410 and wondering if there are older, quality models available. Haven't done any searching yet.

The GOLD STANDARD is the old Model 42 Winchester... great shooter that will INCREASE in value while you use it.

Did see that one. Nice little piece for sure.

High Standard had at least one model but they are few and far between. There were quality issues with some of their models and parts have been scarce for a while. S&W may have had a 410 pump too but they had a reputation similar to High Standard who may have made some of S&W's pumps.

There were a couple of imports from Brazil, the Philippines, and the like but I would stay as far from them as possible. They were nothing but trouble 40 years ago and would not have improved with age.

Personally, I would stick with a Remington, Mossberg, Browning, or Winchester in that order mostly due to cost and familiarity to me. I also prefer the buttstock of the first three over Winchester too. I would have to change the pitch on a 42 and that would destroy the value if it were in original shape. The Browning might move to the front if you reload as the hulls will land closer to you and be easier to find while in the field. I have owned the first three and have shot the Winchester some so have a little basis for comparison.

The question is answered with a Winchester 42. An older Remington 870 would be a good choice. However, when it comes to quality, the Win42 is essentially all steel, hand fitted parts, with a great trigger. The others do not come close.

Don't forget Browning made a run of the Winchester model 42's that were made in Japan. Even so, they are well made, and normally have attractive wood. They're considerably less expensive than the Winchesters.

Yes, they were nice, but the Browning Model 12 20ga I had was not up to the quality of the originals when it came to the internals.

The only negative, if it is a negative, regarding Browning Model 42's, was I believe they were all choked "Modified".

Didn't Savage/Stevens make a .410 pump at one time?

Had a 20 gauge like this as my first shotgun. Wasn't too bad.

Single action bar and had to have a screw driver to remove magazine end cap. I do remember the elevator being a finger pincher if you didn't pay attention.

Wish they had started the bidding a bit lower on this one. I will see what they do if it doesn't sell this time around.

Choke makes very little difference in the .410. Of note was Winchester’s change in choke boring for “skeet” chokes in the Model 42. In the mid-50s, responding to skeet shooters complaints of thin patterns, changed their “skeet” construction from about .003” to .009”. As a point of reference, Winchester’s .410 modifies constriction was .007”.

Modified is a great choke for almost any .410 application (and I can testify that those .009” skeet chokes were just fine shooting quail over a pointing dog.

Yes, I would be interested in that one for $200, myself.

You can find these but they have gone way up in price. Nice gun though

I bought a couple of the Mossbergs at Wally World a few yesrs back for $209 each. They still have them for around $250, cheaper than anyone else. The 870 and BPS are obvious steps up in quality. I wouldn't even bother with an old High Standard or Stevens, merely to save $50 or so, unless there's some sort of sentimental attraction. I don't think I've ever seen a decent Model 42 for less than $1k, and most are $1200-$1500 or more. Strictly a collector gun at that point, when a nice O/U from Browning or Beretta could be had in the $1500-$1800 range.

I had a new 870 Wingmaster about 25 years ago. It was a nice looking gun but it didn't feed well and jammed a couple of times. Of the 3 guns I ever sold it is the one I don't regret.
