I’m still lingering, 870 wing master or browning bps???? Like both, any advantage to either?

Jud, I have a little 28 ga. in an 870... I just love it shot a bunch of forest grouse with it, some sage grouse, a very few quail.. My dogs are flushing dogs and often put up birds at a distance that an 1 1/4 of shot kills a bit better.. If they were pointers, I would use it more on roosters.. Haven't shot it much lately as our forest grouse have not been plentiful .. If you have good dove shooting I think it would be awesome...

Had a BPS 28 a few years back and wish I hadn't traded it off.

Have had BPS in 28, 12 and still have my 10. Love em.

Have had several 870s, while they are proven and nothing wrong w them at all I just prefer the Browning.

More expensive, but the Ohio Ithaca 28 ga. is a sweet gun. I like mine.

I also have a 1100 28 ga., also nice.

I love my 1100 Sporting Clays 28 ga. But I prefer my 870 28 ga when I know I’m going to do a lot of walking like for quail or pheasants because it’s much lighter and easier to carry.

Mine doesn't have the gloss finish of the Sporting Clays model, has a satin finish. I traded for it, so don't know the details about it.

It's a good dove gun. I have three single stage MEC reloaders in 28, 20 and 12 ga. I got rid of turret models, too complicated to set up and operate. These are fast enough and simple. I don't load the quantites of ammo that would justify those type presses..

Last dove hunt, I took one box of ammo. It held over a hundred rounds of reloads...

So, my buds laugh when they see my "one box"...

My Merkel 28 ga. solid rib 27" O/U is a great quail gun. easy to carry and quick to shoot.

Have you tried to find a 28ga 11-48 Remington? Light, reliable, not overpriced (if you search) Franchi made the 48 in a semi-auto 28ga also. Talk about LIGHT!

I have both and there is nothing wrong with either--more a matter of personal preference. That said, if I could only keep one I'd take the thumb safety and bottom eject, and deal with the little extra weight in the Browning. I also really like the fit and finish of the Browning.

A few guys i pheasant hunt with both purchased tristar pointers in 28. One has shot something like 3k rounds through it in little over a year. Neither have any complaints and both are light and fit the 28 gauge well.

The BPS guns are very nice but as others have said they are not true 28 frame guns. The wing masters are svelte and I am partial because I grew up shucking an old wing master. Get your hands on both. I do think if I was going to find a pump 28 I would look at an Ithaca 37.

I had so many problems with my 870 28 that I finally sold it. Wouldn't feed the shells out of the box. Had a slightly bent barrel that wouldn't let me remove the choke tube. Both fixed under warranty. Really liked it as a Mtn. Quail and Blue Grouse gun. Then, during a trap shooting session, the barrel, forend, and magazine spring flew off with the barrel..... My gunsmith couldn't tell me why that happened. Down the road ! I've got a 28 inch, 686 now. Never will I buy another 870. E

If you have the coin to spend you might look at the 28 gauge Beretta A400. It's almost 28 gauge perfection.

I would suggest you buy the gun that fits you the best. The 870 and BPS have significantly different dimensions and feel. I have had both and preferred the BPS for the way it fit and swings but that is a matter of personal choice. I have heard of a number of problems with recently manufactured small bore 870s. Another consideration is that 28 ga. hulls are valuable and the BPS is going to eject them at your feet while the 870s will be further away and off to your right. Good luck!
